With the pressure on Ruben Amorim refusing to go away even after victory over Sunderland, Paul Scholes has now named the manager he believes should come in as a replacement at Manchester United.

Whilst some reports have reiterated that Amorim will be given a full season at Old Trafford, defeat against Sunderland would have no doubt tested the limit of that stance.

For now, the former Sporting Club boss remains in a job after goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko secured a long-awaited comfortable victory for the Red Devils, but the pressure is still on.

Speaking after what was a much-needed win, the United boss told reporters: “That is the kind of game where when we’re not playing well we’re defending well. We had our moments, we were focussed and competitive.

“Not the perfect performance. Senne [Lammens] did really well. We were a competitive and adult team today. We need to win these games with a clean sheet. Good for us.

“We need to understand that we need everyone to be ready to play. It’s a long season, we have a lot of problems, anything can happen. The important thing is that the teammates helped Lammens a lot to have a very good performance.”

With the pressure still on Amorim to turn things around for good, reports have emerged regarding a number of candidates that INEOS could turn to in the coming months.

Former England boss Gareth Southgate, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Fulham’s Marco Silva have all been among those in the headlines, but it remains to be seen if they’ll be needed.

A move for Glasner would be particularly impressive, given that the Austrian has just led Palace to a 19-game unbeaten run and taken them into European football. Alas, if it was down to Scholes, he’d go out and pick a different Premier League manager.

Scholes "definitely" wants Eddie Howe at Man Utd

Speaking on The Overlap, Scholes revealed that he “definitely” wants to see Eddie Howe at Man United. The Newcastle United boss stands out as the top name to replace Amorim, in his opinion, even if the move would be incredibly difficult to pull off from a side in the Magpies’ position.

The Old Trafford legend said, when asked who he’d like to see: “Eddie Howe, Eddie Howe. I’m not sure about his mate [assistant manager Jason Tindall], but definitely him.”

Although unlikely, if there is a chance for United to chase Howe’s signature, then they should go all in. He is one of the most reputable managers in the Premier League and has taken Newcastle from relegation contenders to Champions League qualifiers. It’s the exact type of transformation that the Red Devils so desperately need.

Having lost seven times in 19 games against sides led by Howe, Man United have seen what he’s capable of first-hand and, more importantly, know just how adaptable he is on a tactical front. If the chance comes their way, the Newcastle boss should sit top of their list of Amorim replacements.

However, a midfielder with a little more experience is also in Manchester City’s sights, according to a report from Spain, which reveals they are now preparing an opening offer of €60m (£52m) for Sporting CP star Morten Hjulmand.

Pep is personally keen on signing Hjulmand, having identified him as an ideal fit in City’s system, while the manager also values his versatility, with the Denmark international capable of operating in both defensive and supporting midfield roles.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also credited with an interest in the midfielder, however, having submitted enquiries of their own, so the Blues may be forced to battle it out for his signature.

Scout Ben Mattinson has insisted the Dane is a well-rounded midfielder, describing him as “complete”, while also praising the former Lecce man for his tenacity, anticipation and ball-striking abilities.

CBS’ Marco Messina also believes the Sporting midfielder is destined to play at the top level, having waxed lyrical about him earlier this season.

وأردف: “لقد منحته النصيحة، يمكن للناس أن تفهم، ولكن المدير الفني الذكي عليه ألا يتسبب في أن يصل نجمه الأول إلى مرحة الانفجار، عليه رؤية المشكلة قبل حدوثها ويضع حلًا لها كذلك، هذا هو سلوك المدربين الكبار، وليس آرني سلوت، هو لا يمتلك تلك المهارات كما قلت، لا يمكن مطالبته بها”.

واسترسل: “الأمر تم حله، محمد صلاح سعيد طالما لعب والفريق فاز، عليه الانضمام إلى منتخب مصر ولديه مزاج رائق وفي حالة تركيز من أجل التتويج بكأس أمم إفريقيا للمرة الثامنة، منتخب مصر لديه لاعب ضمن أفضل 5 أو 6 لاعبين في العالم حاليًا، يمتلك مجموعة جيدة كذلك من اللاعبين، عليه أن يأتي مركزًا مع المنتخب، نريد اللقب الثامن”.

The New York Yankees will be adding an important piece back to the starting rotation on Sunday as Luis Gil is set to make his season debut against the Miami Marlins.

Gil has missed the entire season up to this point due to a lat strain he sustained in the spring. He was placed on the 60-day IL and missed the first four months of the year, but is finally ready to make his long awaited return to action.

It's not all good news for the Yankees, however. While Gil is returning, the team announced that Jonathan Loaisiga would be placed on the 15-day IL in a corresponding move, retroactive to Aug. 2.

Loaisiga is dealing with a back injury and was sent back to New York from the team's road series in Miami in order to be evaluated by the team's physician.

Loaisiga has had his career derailed by injuries in recent years. He made just 17 appearances in 2023 and pitched just three times in 2024. This year, he missed the first month and a half of the season before returning to action in May. He's made 30 appearances this season with a 4.25 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings.

At the earliest, Loaisiga could potentially be reactivated on Aug. 17, though it remains to be seen if he'll be ready to return when first eligible.

Jurgen Klopp has already delivered his verdict on completing a return to Liverpool, who endured yet another disastrous afternoon in the Premier League as Nottingham Forest secured a dominant victory.

It’s hard to believe that the Reds were Premier League champions in May, and impressive ones at that. Arne Slot arrived and quickly conquered to shock the rest of English football. It looked like Michael Edwards had performed another act of recruitment genius, but now uncomfortable questions are beginning to emerge.

Liverpool have lost five of their last eight games and now sit in the bottom-half after 12 league games, all but ending their title defence before January has even arrived. After breaking their transfer record twice to welcome Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, it is a run of form that no one saw coming.

It’s now up to Slot to prove his credentials in a crisis. Victory over Real Madrid and Aston Villa proved that there is still plenty of quality in this Liverpool side, it’s just a question of when that quality will be on show.

Just how long Slot will have to turn things around is also a big question. Liverpool have never rushed managerial decisions and Slot has much more credit in the bank than others have done in the past, but the current run of results needs to end – especially if they come at Anfield.

Defeat there would certainly do further damage to the credit that Slot banked last season and perhaps send a timely reminder about Klopp’s answer about if he’d ever make a shock return.

At the time and certainly for the entirety of last season, it was simply a throw-away answer and one that looked unlikely to rear its head again. Now, however, those at Anfield could do with their iconic manager’s energy more than ever.

They won’t and shouldn’t panic about Slot’s current run, but Liverpool should ensure that the Dutchman channels his very own version of Klopp. When Klopp’s sides were up against it, he had that unique ability to pull off what many still deem miracles to this day. He turned doubters to believers to champions. Slot must now remind his very own champions just who they are in similar fashion.

Meanwhile, if the manager’s run continues then Edwards could yet turn back towards one of the best managers in the club’s history for a stunning second stint.

When do the 2025 MLB playoffs start?

The 2025 MLB playoffs began on Sept. 30, just two days after the regular season ended on Sept. 28. The World Series will begin on Oct. 24, and could run to Nov. 1 if the series takes seven games.

How are the MLB playoffs structured?

A total of 12 teams make the MLB playoffs each year, with six teams each from the National League and American League. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds from both leagues get byes through the wild-card round. In the wild-card round, the No. 4 seed faces the No. 5 seed while the No. 3 seed takes on the No. 6 seed.

The wild card is a best-of-three format and the division series is best-of-five games. Both the Championship Series and World Series are best-of-seven game series. In each round, the higher seed hosts at least the first two games of the series.

Aaron Judge is climbing up a special page of the Yankees' record books.

With a home run in the first inning of the Yankees' game against the Tigers on Tuesday, Judge has now compiled 359 home runs during his time in New York, surpassing legendary catcher Yogi Berra for fifth-most in franchise history.

Judge previously tied Berra with his 358th home run on Aug. 31, and now surpasses the Hall of Famer and three-time MVP with his first home run of the month. It's an incredible achievement, as Judge becomes the first player to crack the top-five of the Yankees' home run list since 1957.

Judge now trails only Hall of Famers Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth for the most home runs in Yankees history.

Yankees' All-Time Home Run Leaders

Judge is a long ways away from Gehrig, Mantle and Ruth on the Yankees' all-time home run list, but he should pass DiMaggio for fourth all-time in franchise history before the end of the season. Judge needs only three more home runs to do so, and there are 18 games remaining in the regular season following Tuesday's matchup.

At 33, Judge has time to potentially reach the top-three Yankees' home run leaders, but he will need to continue playing at a high level for several more seasons to approach Gehrig, Mantle and/or Ruth.

Judge has averaged 48 home runs per year over the last five seasons, meaning it would take a little less than three seasons at that pace to pass Gehrig, over three and a half to pass Mantle, and over six seasons to pass Ruth at his current pace.

The Dodgers forced a Game 7 with a drama-filled 3–1 victory in Game 6 on Friday night. Shortly afterwards, it was reported that Los Angeles was going to start two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani on the mound for the winner-take-all Game 7 at Rogers Centre.

The two-way superstar was pulled from the mound in the third inning after allowing three runs on five hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings. He tallied three strikeouts before exiting the game.

Ohtani retired the Blue Jays in order in the first inning and escaped a furious rally in the second by striking out Andrés Giménez with the bases loaded.

The third inning is when trouble emerged. Ohtani allowed a leadoff single to George Springer, who moved over to second base on Nathan Lukes’s sacrifice bunt. After a wild pitch moved Springer to third, Ohtani intentionally walked Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to try to set up the double play.

On the very next pitch, Blue Jays second baseman Bo Bichette hammered an 88.7 slider 442 feet into the center field seats for a 3–0 lead.

Ohtani was yanked from the mound after that swing, and Dodgers reliever Justin Wrobleski came in to close out the third inning.

Hitting

In 11 drama-filled innings of Game 7, Ohtani went 2-for-5 with a walk at the dish.

Ohtani led off the game in the top of the first inning with a single to center field measured at 100.2 mph off the bat. The next two batters, Will Smith and Freddie Freeman, moved him over to second and then third base, but he was stranded there when Mookie Betts grounded out to end the inning.

In the third inning, Ohtani came up with two outs and nobody on base. He hit a screaming line drive to left field—measured at 104.4 mph—but Nathan Lukes caught it for the third out.

Then in the top of the fifth, Ohtani got on with another single, putting two men on with one out in the inning, but the Dodgers couldn’t turn the opportunity into runs.

Ohtani walked in the seventh inning and was stranded on the basepaths when Freddie Freeman grounded into a double play. In the ninth, Ohtani flew out to left field. And in his final at-bat of the season, Ohtani got jammed and grounded out to second base in the 11th.

In 17 games this postseason, Ohtani batted .265/.405/.691 with three doubles, one triple and eight homers. He went 9-for-27 with three doubles, three homers and a .333/.500/.778 slash line in seven World Series games.
