At the end of Sunday’s action, Melbourne Renegades have climbed to second place behind Hobart Hurricanes, while Perth Scorchers have risen to fourth place

Tess Flintoff’s clutch, late hitting cut the tension as Melbourne Renegades toppled Melbourne Stars in the WBBL’s derby on Sunday at Junction Oval.Chasing 142 for victory, Flintoff (17 in nine balls) held her nerve with a six, four and four off Annabel Sutherland’s penultimate over to clinch the win with four wickets and seven balls to spare.Stars had given themselves every chance with some tight bowling after Courtney Webb (37) and Sophie Molineux (32) had put the defending champions on track.Needing a-run-a-ball in the final four overs, both Deandra Dottin and Georgia Wareham holed out to heap the pressure on the lower order. But, needing 12 off ten balls, Flintoff was up to the task against her former club.First she split two leg-side fielders with a swipe that hit the rope before hammering a back-foot drive over cover to level the scores. Victory came courtesy of a sweetly-timed drive over mid-off to put Renegades (3-1) into second behind the unbeaten Hobart Hurricanes (3-0).Earlier, Meg Lanning (3) recorded a rare failure, leaving Sutherland (29) and Marizanne Kapp (22) to pilot Stars’ innings before Kim Garth’s (29 off 19) late hitting. Dottin, with 3 for 20 in three overs, took the last three wickets and was later named the Player of the Match.Devine three-for takes Scorchers past Strikers in rain-hit gameSophie Devine’s intervention took Adelaide Strikers apart before the heavens opened up to hand Perth Scorchers a dominant WBBL win in Melbourne on Sunday.

The veteran New Zealand allrounder took 3 for 12, including a peach to dismiss danger batter Tahlia McGrath first ball. Her delivery shaped into McGrath’s pads, before straightening off the pitch and clipping the top of middle stump.Strikers never recovered, bowled out for 112, with Ellie Johnston, who was the only batter to find rhythm in her 33 in 21 balls, run out.Devine was at the crease when rain arrived, with Scorchers 55 for 2 in the tenth over. The match was abandoned and a nine-run victory declared for Scorchers.Form batter Beth Mooney was dismissed first ball but opening partner Katie Mack (24 not out in 30 balls) put Scorchers in a winning position, making the most of a missed stumping chance off Sophie Ecclestone earlier in her innings.

Stephen Parry appointed Essex Women head coach

Essex have appointed former England spinner Stephen Parry as their new women’s team head coach.Having retired in 2020, Parry was part of the coaching structures at both Lancashire Women and Manchester Originals. He took charge of Originals in the 2023 and 2024 seasons of the women’s Hundred before being replaced by Michael Klinger.Parry, 39, will aim to oversee an upturn in fortunes for Essex after a difficult first season in the Tier 1 women’s structure that saw Andy Tennant depart as head coach after less than 12 months in the role.”I am really excited for this next journey of my cricket career,” Parry said. “I have seen the squad and I feel like I can bring my experience here to move them forward, become more competitive and work towards winning some trophies.”The squad we have here is really exciting and there is a lot of room for growth. There are some great people here, plenty to work with and the club has a real family-orientated feel to it. I am still young, thirsty to learn and want to improve myself whilst helping everybody around me and look to build something special.”The long-term goal is to build a squad where we are competitive across all formats, the first team, Academy and pathway – enhancing Essex Women’s cricket as a whole.”Parry spent his entire 13-year playing career with Lancashire and remains the club’s leading T20 wicket-taker. He was capped five times in the format by England, playing at the 2014 World T20 in Bangladesh, as well as twice in ODIs.Essex’s director of cricket, Chris Silverwood, said: “We are really excited to appoint Stephen as the new Essex Women’s head coach. Stephen brings a wealth of experience from his playing and coaching career, and we are delighted to welcome him to the club.”His recent appointments with Lancashire and the Manchester Originals have shown that he can lead teams in high-pressure environments, and develop, nurture, and bring through talent, which makes him the ideal person to guide our women’s squad.”We are confident that Stephen will have a major impact in shaping the current group of Essex Women, contributing to success both on and off the field.”

Wood sent for scan after hamstring stiffness in Ashes warm-up

The England quick bowled two four-over spells before leaving the field at Lilac Hill

Tristan Lavalette13-Nov-2025England have received a major injury scare ahead of the Ashes after quick Mark Wood experienced stiffness in his left hamstring during their only warm-up match in Perth.Wood had bowled two four-over spells against the Lions at Lilac Hill in his first competitive match in nine months since surgery on his left knee. He left the field after his second four-over spell midway through the second session.Related

Mark Wood puts 'boring' rehab behind him as he gears up for bowling return

Smith: England's all-out pace may not be ideal Ashes attack

“The plan for Mark Wood was for him to bowl eight overs today,” an ECB statement said. “He has some stiffness in his hamstring, which has kept him off the field for some time during the second session of the first day and will undergo a precautionary scan tomorrow.”He is expected to bowl again in two days’ time. It is unlikely he will return to the field today.”England have taken a cautious approach with Wood’s rehabilitation from the knee injury that he sustained at the Champions Trophy in February. He had initially hoped to feature in the final Test of their summer series against India, but a setback in training ended up ruling him out of the entire home season.Wood had bowled several lively deliveries on a relatively sedate surface, conditions far different to what is expected in the first Test at Optus Stadium. He is part of an all-out England pace attack against the Lions, with offspinner Shoaib Bashir not selected in the main XI.”That’s not ideal, but that’s part of being an extremely fast bowler,” Harry Brook said after the day’s play. “I haven’t seen him yet and spoken to him, so I don’t know his current situation. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.”There was further frustration for England’s pace attack with Brydon Carse unavailable on the first day of the warm-up match due to illness, prompting him to stay at the team’s hotel.Captain Ben Stokes had been the standout bowler, with four of the five wickets to fall before tea in an encouraging return in his first match since late July. The development comes just a day after Australia quick Josh Hazlewood was cleared of a hamstring injury. But fellow Ashes Test squad member Sean Abbott was withdrawn from the squad after scans on his left hamstring confirmed a moderate grade strain.

Lionel Messi's long-held Barcelona record broken as Hansi Flick favourite makes history in Osasuna win

A long-standing Lionel Messi record at Barcelona has finally fallen after Pedri etched his name into Blaugrana history during a La Liga win over Osasuna. The 23-year-old became the youngest player ever to reach 150 La Liga appearances for the Catalan side, surpassing Messi, while once again pulling the strings in midfield under Hansi Flick in a 2-0 win.

  • Pedri breaks Messi's record in 2-0 win over Osasuna

Barcelona continued their La Liga title charge on Saturday with a hard-fought victory over Osasuna, a result that allowed the Catalan giants to strengthen their grip at the top of the table. Goals from Raphinha secured all three points for Flick’s side, who were seeking to move seven points clear of Real Madrid ahead of their rivals’ fixture the following day. While the Brazilian forward provided the decisive moments in attack, much of Barcelona’s control stemmed from midfield.

Pedri was handed a starting role at the base of Flick’s double-pivot system, a position that has increasingly become his natural role this season. The Spain international dictated tempo throughout the contest, offering calmness and structure during periods when Osasuna threatened to disrupt Barcelona’s rhythm. His involvement ensured that Barcelona maintained territorial dominance and managed the game intelligently despite the tight scoreline.

Beyond his influence on the match itself, Pedri’s appearance carried historic significance. As per Opta, at just 23 years and 18 days old, he reached 150 La Liga appearances for Barcelona, becoming the youngest player ever to do so. In the process, he surpassed a record previously held by Messi.

Pedri receives praise from Garcia and Flick

Pedri’s record-breaking milestone highlights his remarkable consistency and durability at a club where young players are often burdened with enormous expectations. Reaching 150 league appearances at such an early age places him in rare company and reinforces Barcelona’s long-term commitment to building their midfield around him. That he overtook Messi’s record only adds weight to the achievement, given the Argentine’s central role in shaping the club’s identity for over a decade.

The midfielder’s influence did not go unnoticed by his teammates, with Eric Garcia offering a light-hearted but telling assessment after the match. Speaking to the media, Garcia said, "We knew it was going to be a very tight game. We lacked rhythm in our passing. In the end, against these teams, if you don’t move the ball quickly, it’s tough. In the end, I’m happy with the three points." He then added, "When you play before your rivals and increase your lead, you have a relaxed Sunday at home. When things get complicated, give the ball to Pedri, and he solves everything."

Head coach Flick was equally emphatic in his praise, singling Pedri out despite Raphinha’s two-goal contribution. The German said: "Pedri is a fantastic player, top class. What can I say about him? He’s an absolutely amazing player."

  • Pedri slowly turning into Barcelona's new age midfield legend

Pedri’s rise at Barcelona has been nothing short of extraordinary since his arrival from Las Palmas in 2020. Thrust into the first team almost immediately, he became a regular starter during the 2020–21 season, amassing 52 appearances and playing a key role in Barcelona’s Copa del Rey triumph. That campaign laid the foundation for what would quickly become one of the most intense early-career workloads in European football.

His performances on the club stage were mirrored internationally, with Pedri shining at Euro 2020, where he was named Young Player of the Tournament, before going on to represent Spain at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Those efforts earned him both the Golden Boy and Kopa Trophy in 2021, confirming his status as the most highly regarded young midfielder in world football. Comparisons with Andres Iniesta soon followed, driven by his composure, close control, and ability to glide through crowded midfields.

In recent seasons, injuries have provided the main obstacle to Pedri’s sustained momentum. A series of muscle issues disrupted parts of the 2022–23 and 2023–24 campaigns, forcing Barcelona to carefully manage his minutes. However, under Flick, he has re-emerged as a central figure, once fit, already surpassing 220 appearances in all competitions by the age of 23 and continuing to shape games with maturity well beyond his years.

Pedri will be crucial to Barcelona season plans

Barcelona now turn their focus to maintaining their advantage at the top of La Liga as the season enters a decisive phase. With Pedri once again available and influencing matches, Flick’s side look better equipped to manage the demands of both domestic and European competitions.

For Pedri personally, breaking Messi’s record is unlikely to be an endpoint, but rather another marker in a rapidly expanding legacy at Camp Nou. With assists in three consecutive league games and a growing leadership role in midfield, his influence continues to increase with each appearance.

Lamine Yamal's father accused of 'provoking Real Betis fans' in tense exchange that forced security to intervene during Barcelona win

Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal's father has been accused of 'provoking Real Betis fans' in a tense exchange during the club's win in La Liga on Saturday. Ferran Torres scored a hat-trick, while Yamal and Roony Bardghji were also on target as the Catalan giants clinched an eight-goal thriller and extended their lead over second-placed Real Madrid to four points.

Yamal shines with a goal in Barca's win

Yamal started in Hansi Flick's starting lineup against Betis, alongside Marcus Rashford and Torres as veteran forward Robert Lewandowski was rested for the clash. Torres stole the limelight for the visitors as he scored a first half hat-trick after Manchester United flop Antony handed the hosts an early lead. Young summer signing Roony Bardghji also scored in the first half, bagging his first La Liga goal, as the Catalan giants enjoyed a 4-1 lead at the break.

Around the hour mark, Barcelona won a penalty and Yamal took the spot-kick to further extend his team's lead. Diego Llorente and Cucho Hernandez scored a couple of late goals but the defending champions finally emerged victorious and walked away with a crucial three points.

While the teenager's performance on the pitch was excellent, his father landed himself in trouble after reportedly clashing with Real Betis fans at the stadium. According to the situation in the stands, where Yamal's father was seated, turned hostile after he deliberately provoked home supporters surrounding him near his seat.

He reportedly made gestures, which in turn angered the local fans as they became hostile, leading to heckling and tense moments. A stadium security officer had to intervene and he could be clearly seen approaching Yamal's father to ask him to calm down. Yago, though, later claimed (via ): "I just asked my friend who's there, and he said that for the moment things have calmed down, but there was a moment when he even thought something might happen."

Yamal declared La Liga Player of the Month

The Spanish sensation delivered a dominant run of form across Barcelona’s four La Liga fixtures in November, scoring against Elche, Celta Vigo and Deportivo Alaves while adding two assists in the Catalan side’s emphatic win over Athletic Club. Yamal’s standout moments included a two-assist display on Barcelona’s return to Camp Nou and another goal-and-assist performance against Alaves to close out the month.

Yamal's decisive impact in each fixture reinforced the sense that he had fully rediscovered rhythm and confidence after recent injury struggles. The 18-year-old's explosive contributions helped Barcelona win every league match during the month, propelling him past rivals including Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann in the final vote for La Liga's Player of the Month for November. The teenager's final November tally of three goals and three assists extended his league-leading creative total to eight assists.

AFPYamal loving success at Barcelona

At just 18, Yamal is already a generational talent who is destined to achieve great success in his professional career. He has already drawn comparisons with Argentina and Barcelona legend Lionel Messi for his exceptional talent and goalscoring ability.

Speaking about the success he has achieved thus far, the youngster said: "Where I used to play, in my neighbourhood, there were walls where people would sit and there was no better feeling than getting the people who were sitting there to stand up and laugh at the opponents. I think it’s the best feeling in the world and something that reminds me of that a lot is when I’m playing on the field and the fans get up and are surprised by a play I’ve made. I can’t feel pressure when playing football. I just try to enjoy it. I think that my friends and family have been through harder things than me just playing football.

"Football is everything to me. It’s the first love of my life and it will remain so. It’s one of the sports where everyone is on an equal footing. I don’t think I’ve ever felt pressure playing football. My parents faced real pressure as young parents. Managing family, work, being happy, and buying gifts… that’s real pressure for me."

Dodgers Finalizing Trade to Acquire Twins Reliever Brock Stewart

The Los Angeles Dodgers are finalizing a trade for Minnesota Twins reliever Brock Stewart, Jeff Passan reported Thursday. The Dodgers are sending outfielder James Outman back to the Twins as part of the deal, per Alden González of

Bullpen help is the Dodgers' biggest need at the deadline this year, and they have addressed it by adding Stewart, who is 2-1 with a 2.38 ERA across 34 innings pitched this season. Stewart returns to the Dodgers after beginning his MLB career with them from 2016-19.

The Dodgers also acquired right-hander Paul Gervase and left-handed prospect Adam Serwinowski, as well as catching prospect Ben Rortvedt as part of a three-team trade with the Reds and Rays on Wednesday before the deadline.

Meanwhile, the Twins have been one of the biggest sellers at the deadline this year. They traded outfielder Harrison Bader and closer Jhoan Duran to the Phillies, and sent starting pitcher Chris Paddack to the Tigers on Monday.

Ashwani Kumar – from the hinterlands of Punjab to a raucous Wankhede

Having played just four T20s before Monday, the left-arm seamer became the first Indian to take a four-for on IPL debut

Vishal Dikshit31-Mar-20251:36

Aaron: ‘Skiddy’ Ashwani quicker than batters expected

Ashwani Kumar hails from Jhanjeri, a village in the Mohali district of Punjab. He belongs to a humble family that couldn’t afford to pay for his cricket. He still found ways to get around Punjab to play the game and did well enough to earn a first-class debut at the age of 18. But then a hamstring injury took him off the field. Two seasons later, he returned to the Punjab side but got just one game in the Ranji Trophy and one in the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy. And then another three white-ball games in the 2022-23 season. He was too “raw” then, not very fit, and Punjab had enough pace options in the side at the time.Ashwani then joined the Launching Pad Cricket Academy in Chandigarh in 2023. Soon after that, he got picked for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the 2024-25 season as a back-up in the pace attack led by Arshdeep Singh. But, even before he could get a game, came the IPL mega auction. In 2024, Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had already spotted something in Ashwani to bring him on board as a net bowler, and PBKS even pulled some strings to ensure he went to their camp and not CSK’s.Related

  • Best figures on IPL debut: Ashwani the first Indian with a four-for

Before the auction ahead of IPL 2025, Ashwani appeared for trials at both CSK and Mumbai Indians (MI), and the MI scouts are believed to have been impressed by what they saw: his ability to rush batters despite not being express and the ability to swing the new ball as well as pound it into the pitch, as well as other variations. MI’s scouts – whom captain Hardik Pandya credited after Monday’s win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) – were on the prowl before the auction and made sure the MI management picked two domestic unknowns for INR 30 lakh each to bolster the pace unit – Satyanarayana Raju and Ashwani, who had played only five domestic games at the time. Before IPL 2025 started, Ashwani went back to the academy in Chandigarh to spend time with his coach Varinder Singh and specifically worked on his fitness, his non-bowling arm, and his strength and conditioning. The Ashwani that showed up in the MI camp a couple of months later had a stronger action and a more athletic body. One of the first things Ashwani’s Punjab coach Wasim Jaffer and team-mate Ramandeep Singh – who was his opponent on Monday night – mentioned was his work ethic. “He works tirelessly in the nets, he’s very sincere and he wants to keep improving,” Jaffer told ESPNcricinfo. “He has a lot of things – he can hit 140kph, he has a bouncer, a yorker, a slower ball. I’m so happy he went to the right franchise.”Ashwani Kumar celebrates after having Rinku Singh hole out•Associated PressWhen IPL 2025 started, MI had to deal with Jasprit Bumrah’s absence and two losses in their first two games. Being the only team without any points before Monday’s game, MI could have played it safe by retaining Raju in the XI – he at least has some IPL experience to show. But they took a punt by leaving Raju out and named a fourth IPL Indian debutant in three games, after Raju, Vignesh Puthur and Robin Minz.Playing at home, where conditions are better for their bowling attack, Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar finally struck in tandem. But even though Chahar got the big wicket of Quinton de Kock in his first over, Hardik replaced him with Ashwani for the fourth over. Ashwani had known earlier in the day about his imminent IPL debut, and he was so nervous he could barely have lunch. When Hardik gave Ashwani the ball, he asked him to “enjoy yourself”. And that Ashwani did by striking with his first ball in the IPL in front of thousands of home fans and went on to become the first Indian to bag a four-for in his maiden IPL appearance. That he got Ajinkya Rahane and Rinku Singh as his first two wickets wasn’t even the best part of his day at work. Three balls after he had sent Rinku back, in the 11th over, Ashwani sent one down with a slightly scrambled seam at just short of 137kph. But the way the ball curved from outside leg to hit the top of leg stump, making Manish Pandey look late on the shot, showed that the 23-year-old had a trick or two up his sleeve.”He’s a lot quicker than people recognise at first,” Ryan Rickelton said of Ashwani. “I think that’s a great attribute to have. He can swing the new ball. I know it’s obviously quite tough – we’ve got two specialist bowlers with the new ball as well – but to have a second plan for that swing factor was really impressive. He’s a lot quicker than you think and he rushes you a little bit as well.”Ashwani Kumar is mobbed by Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya after his first-ball strike•Associated PressAnd then Ashwani did it again in his next over. Against the might and muscle of Andre Russell, Ashwani bowled one at 140.7kph – another scrambled-seam delivery that took the top of middle stump, and the Wankhede was in raptures because the crowd knew that with KKR 88 for 8, the game was almost done.”[When] we played a practice game, [we saw] he had that zip, he had that little late swing, something off the wicket, and had a different action and plus, he was a lefty,” Hardik said of Ashwani’s arsenal at the presentation. “This wicket offered a little more and we thought that Ashwani can come and bowl the way he bowls, and I’m really, really happy for him.”Ashwani could hardly believe that he was taking home the Player-of-the-Match award. “This is a very big thing for me that I got an opportunity like this,” he said. “I didn’t think I would be the Man of the Match in my first match. I just wanted to follow my process and do my bit, that’s it, but it turned out very well. I was completely confident [about performing in front of a big crowd] but still I was a little nervous before the match. It was just a little bit of ‘what will happen’.”The MI management “backed him” like they backed Puthur and Raju, and even Hardik all those years ago. You never know what turn life takes – to fast-track an unknown from a small town to Mumbai and make thousands of fans scream your name in a packed stadium, whether you are Puthur, Raju or Ashwani. He has shown the potential and has the support of one of the most successful franchises in T20 cricket, but as Ramandeep said after the game, “he has a long way to go.”

Yankees Send Infielder Oswald Peraza to Angels

The Yankees are sending Oswald Peraza to the Angels, YES Network's Jack Curry reported on Thursday shortly before the trade deadline. In return, Los Angeles is getting prospect Wilberson De Pena and international money, insider Joel Sherman added.

Peraza has spent his entire MLB career with the Yankees since signing with the club in July 2016 as an international free agent from Venezuela. He made his major league debut in 2022 and has appeared in 145 games for the Yankees since then.

Through 71 games this season, which is the most Peraza has ever appeared in during a given season, he's averaging .152/.212/.241, all career-lows. The Yankees were hoping for more from Peraza this season, but he just didn't deliver, so it's not a major surprise he was traded. The Angels hope a new environment will be the boost Peraza needs right now.

At 53–56, Los Angeles is struggling at the plate. The Angel with the highest batting average right now is first baseman Nolan Schanuel with a .277. With Peraza is struggling in that department as well, we'll see how this trade fares for the L.A.

White Sox Catcher Made Most Perfect Throw to Pickoff Runner at Third Base

Chicago White Sox rookie catcher Edgar Quero has an absolute cannon.

In the bottom of the first inning Friday against the Los Angeles Angels, White Sox starter Shane Smith worked himself into a bases-loaded jam with no outs. Angels leadoff man Zach Neto got a bit too aggressive inching off the bag at third, and Quero decided to take a shot.

He quickly popped up and snapped a perfect throw to third baseman Josh Rojas who got the tag down just in time to beat Neto back to the bag.

The amazing throw gave Smith a much-needed first out. He then struck out Angels outfielder Jo Adell, who was at the plate, and eventually got out of the inning without giving up any runs.

Quero is a 22-year-old rookie who actually signed with the Angels as an international free agent in 2021 before he was dealt to the White Sox in the Lucas Giolito deal in '23. He's slashing .280/.351/.381 with three home runs and 26 RBIs over his first MLB season this year. He had three pickoffs from behind the plate heading into Friday's game and now made one of the flashiest highlights you'll ever see.
