Three reasons West Ham must hijack Everton’s bid to sign Martin Terrier

According to The Guardian sport’s deputy news editor Ed Aarons via his official Twitter account, Everton are one of the clubs interested in signing young Lille forward Martin Terrier before the January transfer window slams shut, with a fee for the 20-year-old likely to be around £13m.

Aarons says that the Toffees, along with Premier League rivals Bournemouth and Ligue 1 outfit Lyon, are all keen on the France U21 international, who is currently catching the eye of many teams with his performances on loan at Strasbourg and for his country.

The Merseyside outfit have already completed a £27m deal to sign Cenk Tosun from Besiktas and are closing in on the £20m addition of Theo Walcott from Arsenal, but it appears as though Sam Allardyce isn’t finished there as he is linked with yet another attacking player.

Meanwhile, West Ham United’s revival under David Moyes continued as they beat Huddersfield Town 4-1 at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday, but the impressive result won’t see the Scot get complacent with his side just five points above the relegation zone.

The former Manchester United and Toffees boss will still be looking to strengthen his squad before January 31, and bringing Terrier to the London Stadium could prove to be a shrewd move.

Here are three reasons West Ham must hijack Everton’s bid to sign the forward…

They may need a new one

As things stand West Ham are well stocked in attacking areas, but since the January transfer window opened Diafra Sakho, Javier Hernandez and Andy Carroll have all been linked with moves away from the London Stadium, with the Irons reported to be willing to listen to offers for former duo, while they are understood to want £35m for the latter.

If one or even two of those do go before the end of the month, David Moyes may well consider bringing in a new forward to the club, and Terrier could be the answer for the east London outfit.

Potential

After scoring two goals in 15 appearances for Lille the versatile attacker – who has played on both wings and as a centre-forward this season – joined Strasbourg on loan during the summer, and he has shown the potential he has by scoring three goals and providing a further two assists in 14 Ligue 1 outings.

According to WhoScored.com, his main strengths are his defensive contributions, ability to win aerial duels, holding on to the ball and his long shots.

The stats certainly back that up as he has won 27 tackles, made seven interceptions and won 25 of the 55 aerial duels he has faced.

His prolific goalscoring record for the France U21 side will also have caught the eye, as he has seven goals in five caps for his country.

While Moyes should have a decent budget to spend this month if he needs to, it still won’t be huge and West Ham will likely not be going out and spending huge amounts on one player.

In that respect, bringing in an individual like Terrier who is impressing now and has plenty of potential to improve in the future – as well as possibly becoming a full France international – for around £13m should appeal to the Irons, and they need to be competing with a rival like Everton for promising youngsters like the Frenchman.

Three last minute January deals that Celtic can still complete

After confirming the signing of Chelsea prospect Charly Musonda on Monday evening, transfer activity is again heating up at Celtic after a pretty quiet January all things considered.

The signing of defender Marvin Compper is the only other first team signing to arrive at Celtic Park this month, alongside St Mirren winger Lewis Morgan, who was loaned back to the Scottish Championship high flyers for the rest of the season.

After failing to make an impact in the UEFA Champions League and an important half-season ahead, fans were hoping for something of a refreshment of Brendan Rodgers’ squad but barring deadline day drama could have to remain content with the business that’s been done.

There’s still time though and with injuries in key positions, potential mega money bids for established stars and all the usual craziness that comes at the end of January window, Celtic could still do some serious business.

These are the THREE deals that could still happen before the deadline…

In: Adam Bogdan (or any ‘keeper really)

Signing a goalkeeper has been high on the list of priorities for Celtic supporters for a while now, but after a serious knee injury ruled out Craig Gordon for the next three months it’s not a must before the window shuts.

Brendan Rodgers himself confirmed they were on the hunt for a goalkeeper and the Bhoys were reported to have had a bid for Motherwell man Trevor Carson rejected this week.

Celtic Quick News threw a new, interesting name into the equation on Tuesday, reporting that sources confirmed to them that the club were on the hunt for Liverpool man Adam Bogdan, also claiming that Joe Hart was on Celtic’s radar.

Bogdan would certainly tick a few boxes for the Hoops. He has extensive club experience at Bolton Wanderers, 20 international caps for Hungary and at 30 years of age is potentially coming into his prime as a goalkeeper.

The 6ft 5in shot-stopper is on the hunt for regular football after returning from a lengthy lay-off due to injury and Celtic could be the perfect environment. It’s certainly one to watch in the final hours of the window.

Out: Moussa Dembele

It appears that Moussa Dembele will be eternally linked with an exit away from Celtic until the day actually comes, but as we head into deadline day, could that day have finally arrived?

The Frenchman has made just a handful of starts for the club over the last couple of months and with just eight goals this term has struggled to replicate the impact he made in his debut season.

As reported by The Herald, the club rejected a fresh bid for the striker last week, with Brendan Rodgers expecting he won’t be making a move away from Glasgow in the final days of the window.

However that follows intense speculation he could be making an exit, with assistant manager Chris Davies admitting his head may have been turned.

The final day of the January window can often be a sellers’ market and with cash-rich clubs desperate to improve their squads for the second half of 2017/18, there may not be a better time for Celtic to sell.

In: John McGinn

It’s time that Celtic start to plan for the future of their central midfield. Stuart Armstrong has just 18 months left on his contract at Celtic and has failed to commit his long-term future the club and at 32 years of age, Scott Brown is now spring chicken.

There are few better Scottish prospects around right now than Hibernian man John McGinn and it appears we are drawing closer to the player finally making an exit from Easter Road.

Hibs admitted right at the start of the transfer window, amidst interest from Celtic and West Ham, that they are open to offers for the Scotland international after a fine run of form that has helped Neil Lennon’s side compete in the top six of the Scottish Premiership.

A boyhood Celtic supporter and with significant potential, it would be a shame if he left for English football and if the Hoops have the resources, perhaps this is the time to commit and spend what it takes to bring him to Glasgow.

PL25: Football short-circuits at goal-crazy Upton Park

To celebrate 25 years of the Premier League each week in Football Fancast we’re going to be looking back at a memorable game that took place on the corresponding date. This time out we revisit a pulsating, loony encounter at Upton Park complete with broken limbs, goals galore, and fiery tantrums.

In hindsight the clues were there that West Ham United v Bradford City at Upton Park on February 12th 2000 would be a firecracker of a game.

Thoroughly in his element, Harry Redknapp had blended a side of experienced gnarl in Stuart Pearce and Neil Ruddock with highly promising academy kids such as Carrick, Cole, Lampard and Ferdinand – whatever became of them? He then threw in the eccentric electricity of two Paolos – Wanchope and Di Canio – for good measure before standing a safe distance back and letting his team explode and implode depending on their mood. When the great teams of the Premier League era are rattled through this one should never be overlooked.

As for Bradford their dream inaugural season in the top flight was so far going much to plan. Performances that would have ended in comfortable wins months earlier were now resulting in hard-fought draws due to the huge step up in quality and three points had become precious and scarce. Overall though they were doing themselves proud; keeping their head above the bottom three all the time aware that one slump in form or application would doom them to a swift return from whence they came.

Hope resided in the steadying influence of their midfield mainstay Stuart McCall and further optimism was sourced from two consecutive home victories the latter of which downed title challengers Arsenal in front of a delirious Valley Parade. This meant that the Bradford side that travelled down to London were full of brio and belief.

So the clues were there of a potential firecracker. But nobody could have anticipated the mayhem, high drama, goals in abundance, and sheer madness that was to come. This wasn’t merely a ‘classic’ like a free-flowing 4-2 might be considered so. This was football short-circuiting and briefly flashing up a highlights reel of what it can offer.

Five minutes in and the Hammers’ stopper Shaka Hislop collided with Dean Saunders in innocuous fashion but stayed down motionless. His broken leg necessitated the premature debut of teenager Stephen Bywater due to West Ham’s usual back-up Craig Forrest being away on international duty and sometimes such circumstances herald heroism but in this instance it did not. Bywater flapped, he spilled; every mistake adding another layer of nerves onto his next commitment.

Half an hour in Dean Windass broke the deadlock with a close-range header but the home side’s free-scoring ways meant no panic set in and they continued to carve out opportunities. Trevor Sinclair equalised during a period of intense pressure and shortly after John Moncur turned the game on its head with a low drilled effort that caught the Bradford keeper in no man’s land. Had Redknapp’s men saw the first half out it could be reasoned that they might have racked up a sizable win that day but such was their oscillation between brilliance and frailty that the Bantams drew level through a contentious pen.

It was now two-two at the break and only the most foolhardy of punters would have dared commit even a small stake on where this crazy match was heading from here on in. Certainly few would have backed the flame-haired Jamie Lawrence to score twice in quick succession as Bradford resumed where they left off: sensing weakness; sensing a famous awayday. His first was a rebound after Bywater fumbled a chest-height speculative effort. His second careered over the youngster’s scrambling arms. Bywater was having a ‘mare.

Enter stage left, Di Canio. After seeing two penalty appeals turned down – both nailed on in truth – the emotional striker signalled to the bench that he wanted to be taken off. “No more. I play no more,” he informed his gob-smacked manager as he sat cross-legged on the touchline. Redknapp’s response to the Italian’s second most famous strop in English football was industrial and included plenty of spittle, Fs and Ks.

Reborn and re-energised, Di Canio began to run the show as only he could and when the Hammers were finally awarded a spot-kick he thought little of shoving the designated taker Frank Lampard off the ball and taking it himself. It was now 4-3 to the visitors but barring a struck post that would have sealed the result the momentum had very much shifted.

Joe Cole, 19 years of age, raw and extravagant, was magnificent that day as he spied the possibility of an England call-up and with Di Canio on a personal mission from an insane god few teams could have withstood an incredible comeback. Bradford, to their immense credit, didn’t even try; too intent still on pushing forward and capitalising on the vast gaps that were now appearing here, there and everywhere.

With twenty minutes to go it became 4-4, when Cole fired in from six yards out and duly flung himself into his adoring public. The game had long confirmed itself as a classic and now it was about deciding which former pros would be reminiscing on it with a broad smile in years to come and which with a grimace.  Seven minutes remained of this pulsating, loony encounter when Di Canio charged forward, stemmed his run with a chopped control, and laid the ball off for Lampard to curl home the winner.

“That game is what it’s all about for supporters,” Redknapp gushed later. “They come to be entertained and they certainly got their money’s worth today.” Never were truer words spoken.

What happened next?

Bradford survived the drop on the final day of the season with a 1-0 win over Liverpool.

West Ham finished a respectable ninth and looked forward to a bright future that sadly never materialised.

[ad_pod ]

Three West Ham players that have 11 matches left to save their Irons careers

West Ham United boosted their chances of avoiding the drop from the Premier League this season following their 2-0 win against Watford at the London Stadium on Saturday.

The Irons had taken just two points from a possible nine following an impressive 4-1 win against Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium early on in January, but despite a number of injuries and a suspension they bounced back against the Hornets through goals from Javier Hernandez and the returning Marko Arnautovic.

The result means that they lie in 12th position in the standings and are four points above 18th-placed Southampton, and while there is still plenty of work to do they look to be in a better place to survive than they were when Slaven Bilic was sacked earlier in the campaign.

While the club has plenty left to play for in the coming three months as they look to reach the magic 40-point mark as soon as possible, there are a number of their players that will be fighting hard to prove they have a future with the east London outfit, with that looking to be in severe doubt for some of them right now.

Here are three West Ham players that have 11 matches left to save their Irons careers…

James Collins

The experienced West Ham centre-back’s contract is due to run out at the end of June, and with no new deal on the cards as thing stand the 34-year-old could be on his way out of the London Stadium at the end of the season.

With Angelo Ogbonna, Jose Fonte, Winston Reid and Declan Rice for competition, it looked as though Collins would be leaving whatever happened, but injuries to Fonte and Reid in more recent times have finally given the Welshman the extended opportunity in the first team that he was looking for.

While he was disappointing in the 3-1 defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion, he has started all of the club’s previous five Premier League matches and has done reasonably well, and he will be looking to keep his spot in the side and continue impressing in the final 11 matches in order to extend his stay with the Irons.

Arthur Masuaku

Masuaku was really becoming a key player for West Ham and a real fans’ favourite on the left-hand side – until the FA Cup defeat at League One outfit Wigan Athletic last month that is.

The 24-year-old was dismissed for spitting at a Latics player in the 2-0 defeat and subsequently handed a six-match ban, and David Moyes’ disappointment with the player after the match suggested it may not be an easy route back into the team for the Frenchman when he returns to the fold.

It is the kind of incident that has the potential to end a player’s career at a club and completely lose the trust of his manager, and Masuaku will need to work hard in training and have an impeccable attitude if he is to become a key first team player before the end of the campaign and in to next season too.

Javier Hernandez

The West Ham striker has hit a bit of form with three Premier League goals in his previous four appearances, and they were much needed after what has been a tough campaign overall for the Mexican following his summer move from Bayer Leverkusen.

The 29-year-old had only hit four in his previous 17 top flight fixtures, and he had often struggled when asked to play the lone strike role by Slaven Bilic and then David Moyes.

The Telegraph reported in January that the club were willing to listen to offers for the former Manchester United man, and he may still need to convince Moyes in the final 11 matches of the season that he has a future at the London Stadium beyond the summer – although his link up with Marko Arnautovic in recent weeks suggest he is already making the required impact.

Leeds United fans excited for return of Saiz ahead of Derby match

Leeds United will have Samuel Saiz available for this evening’s Championship match against Derby County.

The playmaker was forced to miss six games as punishment for spitting during the team’s FA Cup loss to Newport County in January.

With Saiz on the sidelines, the Whites have struggled to show flair and create ideas in the final third.

In fact, since the Spaniard’s last appearance, the team have lost four and drawn two in the Championship.

During that spell, the Yorkshire club also made a managerial change, replacing Thomas Christiansen with ex-Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom.

The club are in need of points as they have not tasted victory in the league since Boxing Day when they earned a 2-1 victory over Burton Albion away.

As it stands, Leeds are 12th in the table, eight points adrift of the playoff spots.

A win over Derby will be no easy task as the Rams are fourth, just three points behind the automatic promotion spots.

Leeds fans, though, are hopeful that Saiz will be the difference this evening.

The playmaker has scored nine goals and created five assists in 25 appearances in all competitions.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez confirms Jonjo Shelvey will miss Liverpool clash

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has confirmed midfielder Jonjo Shelvey will miss the match against Liverpool at Anfield this weekend because of a knee injury.

The club announced earlier this week that the 26-year-old had picked up a knee injury during the 2-2 draw against Bournemouth last weekend, and he looks set to miss out on the trip to Merseyside.

Following a disappointing spell of form that saw him relegated to the substitutes’ bench, the midfielder returned to the starting XI and he has been in impressive form alongside Mo Diame in the middle of the park in recent weeks, including being influential in the 1-0 win against Manchester United at St James’ Park last month.

The Magpies are just two points above the relegation zone and they desperately need to keep picking up points, and Rafa Benitez’s men could easily find themselves in the relegation zone by the time they kick off against Liverpool with Southampton playing host to fellow strugglers Stoke City and Swansea City welcoming West Ham United to the Liberty Stadium.

They face a tough task against Jurgen Klopp’s side though, who beat the Irons 4-1 at Anfield last weekend with the imperious front three of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all getting on the score-sheet to take their combined tally for the season to 63 in all competitions.

Revealed: Newcastle’s top five chance creators this Premier League season

Under Rafa Benitez, Newcastle United’s blueprint for survival in the Premier League was always going to be built on defensive solidity.

The former Liverpool manager asked for funds in both the summer and January transfer window but when Mike Ashley failed to oblige, it only made entrenched Benitez’s belief that a safety-first approach was the best way to stay in the top flight.

And so it has proved. This Magpies side is organised, diligent and disciplined but it lacks stardust. Currently, it looks as if they will just about avoid relegation but if they do drop, it will be down to a lack of creativity and goals scored.

[ad_pod ]

With that in mind, we’ve taken a look at the most creative players within Benitez setup; the ones who lay on the most chances for their team-mates.

One man came out way ahead of the rest; read on to find out who it was…

Tied in joint fifth are two summer acquisitions who have had their moments in a Newcastle shirt but probably lack the required quality and consistency to make a real impact.

Nevertheless, the numbers show that both Merino and Joselu have chipped in by making their fair share of chances, even if they will likely spend more time watching the relegation dogfight from the bench as opposed to playing in it.

Merino was brought in as a creative midfielder so it is more surprising to see Joselu – valued at £3.6m by Transfermarkt – so high in the rankings.

Atsu is an often unheralded player, but he makes a big impact for Newcastle.

He took a while to mature and Benitez likes him because he sticks to the task well and offers some much-needed pace to this Magpies setup.

He can still be a tad wasteful and if he sorts that out, he could go even higher up this list before the end of the season.

Perez is inconsistent but on his day, he can link midfield and attack better than anyone else in Benitez’ squad.

You get the feeling he is more comfortable as a provider than being relied on to provide goalscoring threat but Newcastle’s lack of a prolific number nine, who can also provide the hold-up play Benitez requires from his lone striker makes that difficult.

Still, Perez is a useful asset and will be one of Newcastle’s most important players in the run-in.

Shelvey may have been excluded from the England squad, denying him the chance to add to his six Three Lions caps, but there is no doubting his importance to Newcastle.

His defensive discipline is not the best – and there is no doubt that grates on Benitez – but his range of passing and confidence on the ball is much-needed in an otherwise workmanlike Magpies side.

It is looking ever more doubtful that his season will end with a summer trip to Russia but if he keeps making chances for others from deep, he should still be a Premier League player come May.

Ritchie is head and shoulders above the rest here, taking on his second season in the Premier League as impressively as he did in his maiden top flight campaign with Bournemouth.

The demands Benitez puts on his wide players means that Ritchie doesn’t have as much freedom to cut inside and affect play as he might like but he is clearly not struggling to make chances.

Him continuing to do so is vital if Newcastle are to survive.

Newcastle fans don’t want Celtic’s Scott Sinclair

Newcastle fans are not happy with links to Celtic’s Scott Sinclair, after the bookmakers slashed odds on a move to Tyneside.

Newcastle have been moved into third favourites to sign Scott Sinclair this summer, slightly behind Brighton and Bournemouth.

The 29 year-old attacker has been a dominant force since leaving English football to join Celtic, scoring 21 league goals last season and nine so far this season.

[ad_pod ]

His pace and clinical finishing have wowed spectators in Scotland, but Newcastle fans are not happy with the links, commenting on the gap in quality between Scottish football and the Premier League.

Sinclair was supposed to be one of the next big things when he broke onto the scene, but having failed to live up to expectations has found life much easier since moving to Celtic.

Rafa Benitez’s side have certainly struggled for goals, but it seems like fans aren’t even remotely interested in giving Sinclair a chance to prove he can cut it in the Premier League.

Everton fans mock club after Under-23 meltdown

Everton fans can’t believe the state their club is in after the Under-23s followed the senior side’s lead and lost to Manchester City.

There comes a point for football fans when it’s better to laugh than cry, and it’s fair to say Everton fans are fast approaching that point.

Sam Allardyce was brought into the club to secure their Premier League status, but fans have quickly grown tired of his uninspiring tactics and quite frankly smug demeanour.

Fans were infuriated by the 3-1 loss to Manchester City on Saturday, and now it seems that the U23 side has followed suit, losing 4-3 to City’s U23s, despite leading 2-0 at half time.

“Bottler” is a term that gets thrown around all too often these days, but fans can’t exactly be blamed for criticising the lack of spine not just in the current senior side but at the club as a whole.

Tottenham Hotspur keen on De Ligt, fans react

Tottenham Hotspur are one of a handful of clubs interested in signing Ajax teenager Matthijs de Ligt, according to football.london.

The 18-year-old is believed to have attracted attention due to his performances at centre-back for the Dutch outfit this season.

Despite his young age, De Ligt has started 28 games in the Eredivisie and has even contributed three goals and one assist.

The defender has also featured twice in the Champions League and Europa League this season, gaining valuable experience.

Football.london reports that any successful suitor may have to part with around £50m for the defender’s signature.

Tottenham’s arch rivals Arsenal, as well as Barcelona, are also believed to be keeping tabs on the youngster.

The rumoured interest in De Ligt raises questions over Toby Alderweireld’s future, which has been a major talking point this season.
