  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Blues were in action at Stamford Bridge on the opening weekend of the WSL season. A derby date in west London added extra spice to the early proceedings in 2023-24, with Fishel eager to make a positive first impression on a new fan base.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

It took the 22-year-old former Tigres forward less than 28 minutes to make a decisive contribution, with far too much space afforded to her inside the Spurs penalty area – allowing a glancing effort to be diverted into the bottom corner.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Fishel met a hanging cross from the left flank and rose above her marker, who was a couple of yards off the pace when the initial delivery came in, and made the perfect connection to divert the ball beyond a sprawling dive from Becky Spencer.

Fishel has won one senior cap for the United States and will be hoping that her exploits in her England allow her to figure more prominently heading forward – as the USWNT look to rebuild on the back of a disappointing 2023 Women’s World Cup campaign.

Lauren Hemp, Aitana Bonmati and GOAL's Women's World Cup Team of the Tournament

Players from eventual winners Spain, beaten finalists England and three other nations make it into GOAL's best XI from the last month Down Under

Spain were crowned champions of the world on Sunday to conclude what was a truly brilliant Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. With giants like Brazil, Germany and Canada crashing out in the group stages, while underdogs such as Morocco, Jamaica and South Africa made the last 16, it was certainly one of the best tournaments this competition has given us.

There were some exceptional individual performances along the way, too, in all areas of the park, with so many different styles and systems on show Down Under making it all the more interesting.

But who are the 11 players that have made GOAL's World Cup Team of the Tournament?…

  • Getty

    GK: Mary Earps (England)

One of the trickiest positions to pick in this team, with Australia's Mackenzie Arnold and Sweden's Zecira Musovic both unlucky to miss out, but it's Mary Earps who gets the nod in between the sticks.

The England star became the first since goalkeeper since 2007 to save a penalty in a Women's World Cup final, with her certainly deserving of that big moment on the big stage on Sunday. The same goes for the warm applause and cheer she got when she claimed her Golden Glove award, too.

Earps constantly came up big for the Lionesses in this tournament, keeping three clean sheets and making a number of highlight reel-worthy saves along the way.

    RB: Ona Batlle (Spain)

Originally one of the 15 players that withdrew from national team selection, that Ona Batlle chose to make herself available for Spain for this World Cup was a huge boost for La Roja.

Arguably the best right-back in the world already, the 24-year-old was extremely effective on both sides of the ball throughout the tournament as her nation were crowned champions of the world.

No player won more tackles than Batlle in Australia and New Zealand, and only two completed more passes in the final third. She's the perfect modern day full-back.

  • Getty Images

    CB: Amanda Ilestedt (Sweden)

It's not every day that there is a centre-back in the running for the Golden Boot, but Amanda Ilestedt's four goals for Sweden this past month put her right up there, only one behind eventual winner Hinata Miyazawa.

Those goals were important, too. The first, a 90th-minute winner against South Africa, ensured her country got off to the perfect start. Her second broke the deadlock in the 5-0 win over Italy, with Sweden having struggled to opening the scoring until her header. The fourth, meanwhile, gave Sweden the lead in their quarter-final victory over Japan, which surprised many.

Let's not take away from Ilestedt's defensive contributions, either. Sweden kept four clean sheets in their seven World Cup games, only conceding three times, and their towering, goalscoring centre-back was a huge reason why.

    CB: Alex Greenwood (England)

One of the most impressive performers across this entire tournament, Alex Greenwood was absolutely brilliant for England as the Lionesses reached the final for the first time.

No player in Australia and New Zealand completed more passes than the centre-back, whose ball-playing abilities and set-piece deliveries also made her the joint-second most creative footballer on show, despite her position.

England kept three clean sheets in seven games at this World Cup, too, conceding only four times, and Greenwood's reading of play, well-timed tackles and excellent blocks were a big part of that defensive effort.

Brazil player ratings vs Senegal: Richarlison's misery continues & Marquinhos is all over the place as Selecao slip to shock defeat

Brazil were stunned by an incisive Senegal in a friendly in Portugal, as the unfancied African side ran out 3-2 winners.

Brazil opened the scoring after just 11 minutes, as West Ham's Lucas Paqueta rose to head home Vinicius Jr's brilliant cross.

However, the South American giants saw their lead swiftly extinguished, with Habib Diallo scoring a superb volley after Joelinton had failed to clear his lines.

Marquinhos then handed Senegal a shock lead, as he inadvertently turned a cross into his own goal, and Sadio Mane added a third with a stunning strike from the corner of the box.

Marquinhos managed to get one in the right net, too, turning home from a corner to make it 3-2, but it wasn't enough. Mane added a fourth from the penalty spot late on after Ederson brought down Nicolas Jackson.

GOAL rates Brazil's players from Estadio Jose Alvalade in Portugal.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Ederson (4/10):

Beaten all ends up by Habib Diallo's brilliant volley and Mane's strike. Was brutally unlucky with Marquinhos' own goal, as he had already committed himself. Was directly to blame for the fourth, as he fouled Nicolas Jackson in the area, leading to Mane's second.

    Danilo (5/10):

Nearly scored from a long-range free-kick. Offered precious little defensively and should have been nearer to Mane prior to his goal.

    Eder Militao (5/10):

Not at fault for the first goal, although he and Marquinhos were caught too high for Senegal's third.

    Marquinhos (4/10):

Slightly out of position before Diallo's strike, then scored a terrible own goal as he stretched in the box. Managed to score at the right end too, essentially sending a slide tackle into the back of the net, but it could not undo the damage.

    Ayrton (5/10):

Unable to stop the cross coming in that led to Senegal's equaliser and struggled to find any rhythm to his play prior to being subbed.

    Midfield

    Joelinton (5/10):

Couldn't clear his lines, leading to Senegal's equaliser. Did not get a grip on the game and was subbed in the second half; he was replaced by Raphael Veiga.

    Bruno Guimaraes (6/10):

Tidy on the ball but looked somewhat overwhelmed when the Senegalese press boxed him in. Worked hard.

    Lucas Paqueta (6/10):

Scored a clever header after Vinicius' superb cross. Some neat flicks and tricks but he couldn't make anything stick. Injured in the second half and subbed.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Malcom (4/10):

On the periphery of the game until his substitution, as he failed to get any change out of his marker. Replaced by Rony.

    Richarlison (3/10):

Missed a one-on-one in the first half with his only chance. Subbed off just 10 minutes into the second half for Pedro. A terrible performance.

    Vinicius Jr (7/10):

Curled in a truly stunning cross for Paqueta to score. Tortured the Senegalese defence in the first half in particular, although his influence waned.

    Subs & Manager

    Pedro (5/10):

On for Richarlison. Ran around a lot but couldn't add a clinical touch.

    Rony (5/10):

Came on for Malcom but had much the same impact.

    Raphael Veiga (6/10):

On for Joelinton and helped Brazil gain a measure of control in midfield.

    Andre (6/10):

Replaced Paqueta. Struggled to impact the game.

    Alex Telles (6/10)

On for Ayrton. Did his job.

    Ramon Menezes (4/10)

His Brazil side were all over the place. While they did score twice, they conceded three, and offered very little in the way of a clinical touch. There's a lot of work to be done here, but it may not be his job.

Keep, loan or sell: The players Man City should allow to leave in the 2023 summer transfer window

The Premier League champions have had a dream season, but it will be the last hurrah for several players, even if City are reluctant to let some leave

Manchester City face a smaller rebuilding job than any other team in the Premier League this summer. They are on the brink of winning the treble and their substitutes bench is better than the starting XI of many other clubs in the division.

But Pep Guardiola has not achieved everything in his career by standing still, and he is already planning for the future. The likes of Kalvin Phillips and Sergio Gomez have little prospect of staying in the team, while City face a battle to keep Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva at the club.

GOAL analyses who City should keep hold of, who they should send out on loan and who they should cash in on this summer…

  • Getty

    KEEP: Erling Haaland

There is no question that City could even think of selling Haaland after his record-breaking season. However, Real Madrid have just lost Karim Benzema unexpectedly and the Norwegian, who visited the Bernabeu while he was deciding whether to join Madrid or City, is an obvious target for the 14-time European champions.

That is why City need to tie Haaland down to a new and improved contract to ensure the world's best striker doesn't escape their clutches any time soon. They can afford to give him a salary bump after signing him for only £51 million last year, and they need to ensure this once-in-a-generation talent stays with them as long as possible.

  • Getty

    KEEP: Ilkay Gundogan

Yet again, Gundogan has produced the magic when City needed him most. He has been one of Pep Guardiola's most important players over the season, but came into his own in the final few weeks.

He scored two outrageous goals against a stubborn Everton which effectively secured the Premier League title and then produced two stunning volleys to sink Manchester United in the FA Cup final, including breaking the record for the fastest goal in an FA Cup final. And no City fan will forget that he also scored the two goals against Aston Villa which snatched back the Premier League title on the final day of the previous season.

Even at 32, Gundogan still has so much more to give, and as his contract is about to run out, there would be no benefit to losing him. That's why City need to give him what he wants and ensure he extends his stay for at least another two years.

  • Getty

    KEEP: Bernardo Silva

Bernardo has had yet another incredible season. He is the key to City's style of play, a selfless worker, an outstanding dribbler and passer, and is able to thread the team's intricate play together. While not a prolific scorer, he has a habit of popping up and netting at just the right time, such as when City needed a second goal against Newcastle, or his brace against Real Madrid.

But he is not entirely happy in Manchester for lifestyle reasons and wanted to move to Barcelona last year. In January, he said he was "looking for a new project", and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in him. But City hold all the cards as he has two years left on his contract. Unless he makes a serious push to leave, such as refusing to train, then the club should hold on to him.

    KEEP: Kyle Walker

Walker has had a challenging season, but has come out fighting and reaffirmed his place in the team at the crucial stage of the campaign. He has also proved Guardiola wrong after the coach questioned his ability to play in his new system.

He has only one year left on his contract, but at 33 is unlikely to command a huge fee, yet he still has plenty to give. And after six years of service, he has earned the right to leave on his own terms next year and fulfill his dream of joining his boyhood club Sheffield United if he so wishes.

Gers fans gutted at Morelos news

Glasgow Rangers fans are gutted after it was revealed Alfredo Morelos has agreed terms with Porto ahead of a move to the Portuguese outfit.

Morelos has been a fantastic forward for the Gers since signing for the club in 2017 – he has managed 94 goals in 182 games for them (Transfermarkt). However, he has been regularly linked with a move away from the club, and he has admitted he wants to play in a more competitive league in the future (Goal.com).

Given he also said more recently that his dream is to play in the Premier League (Radio Caracol), it is therefore a little surprising that he appears to be on his way to Porto. As per Antena 1, Porto have agreed terms with the Colombia international, and the Portuguese outlet is positive the 25-year-old will soon make the switch.

The fans were gutted at the prospect of losing their star man, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Morelos news below

“If Morelos is away to Porto, I’ll genuinely greet.”

“Fab tell me if Morelos to Porto is true i’m going to cry”

“Nothing but good to say for Morelos if he is leaving. Porto is probably the correct level he should be going to if he wants to further his career. It’s going to be a very sad day if it does happen but he’s done all we could ever ask for. King.”

  • Celebratory pitch invasion

As is very much the norm when it comes to celebrating a team's success at the end of the season in English football, the scenes spilled onto the pitch after victory was secured.

You know, the pitch the owners spent hundreds of thousands of pounds to relay twice upon buying the club…

  • Mullin's the man

After hitting 38 goals in the National League this season, it's no surprise to see the reception Mullin got at full-time, particularly as two of those came in the all-important game and in spectacular style.

The 28-year-old has been nothing short of exceptional since signing for Wrexham in 2021, firing them this far and cementing his legacy as a club legend.

Antony comes to life! Man Utd winners & losers as Red Devils bounce back from Liverpool demolition with much-needed victory over Real Betis

The Brazilian helped redeem himself with a superb goal in the 4-1 win over Real Betis while Bruno Fernandes also did himself proud.

This was a night to heal the wounds of Anfield and two of the biggest scapegoats from the 7-0 mauling on Merseyside came out swinging against Real Betis.

Antony was electrifying down the right wing and scored a brilliant goal which put United in command again after they had gifted Betis a way back into the game, when Ayoze Perez's controversial goal cancelled out Marcus Rashford's opening strike.

Bruno Fernandes, meanwhile, showed he can indeed be an inspiring captain as well as a talismanic presence in midfield.

The Portuguese topped his performance off with a goal before Wout Weghorst made amends for a series of misses by scoring the fourth goal.

However, David de Gea looked very uncomfortable on the ball and the visiting Spanish fans soured the evening by throwing objects at United supporters.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Old Trafford.

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Antony

The Brazilian gave Betis' defence a torrid time with some brilliant runs down either wing.

He also worked really hard to win the ball back and make sure he won every 50/50 he went for.

And when he needed a finish to pull United back into the game, boy did he provide one, curling the ball into the far top corner.

The forward is sometimes dismissed as a one-trick pony, but what a trick it is.

He could have scored again in the second half after another incisive run down the right.

  • Getty

    LOSER: Claudio Bravo

The former Manchester City goalkeeper had a torrid time in England and his bad luck on these isles continued with a feeble display.

He was clumsy coming out of his area and allowed Fernandes' header to go through his hand.

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Bruno Fernandes

Forget the goal or even the assist to Antony, Fernandes' finest moment was a gutsy sliding tackle in the first half to halt a Betis counter.

That got the fans quickly back on his side, the Stretford End bellowing out "Bruno, Bruno".

Fernandes needed to respond more than anyone else after his credentials as captain had been called into question at Anfield.

He did himself proud with an inspirational performance, knitting together United's attacks with pin-point passing and playing with bags of energy.

    LOSER: David de Gea

United's goalkeeper had very few saves to make which meant the other side of his game came under extra scrutiny.

His kicking was very scrappy and he almost gifted Betis a second goal right before half-time with a careless pass which landed straight at Juanmi.

Bellingham, Amrabat and five players Liverpool could sign in January

The Reds have already signed Cody Gakpo from PSV, but who could follow him through the door at Anfield?

It looks as if the January transfer window is going to be a busy one for Liverpool.

With the Cody Gakpo deal done, the Reds’ business is well underway as Jurgen Klopp looks to strengthen his squad for what looks like being a tense race for Champions League qualification.

Liverpool currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, but will be hoping to see their form pick up considerably in the second half of the campaign, and the arrival of some new faces in January could aid that process considerably.

But who might be on the agenda? GOAL takes a look at some potential targets for Klopp’s side…

  • Getty Images

    Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund)

It is no secret that Liverpool are desperate to convince England’s latest young superstar to come to Anfield, and it is understood that they, along with Real Madrid and Manchester City, are among the most serious contenders for Bellingham’s signature.

Nobody within the club is playing down the Reds’ interest, with Klopp speaking publicly about the Borussia Dortmund midfielder prior to Liverpool’s game with Aston Villa. “Just exceptional,” was his verdict.

A January move, to Liverpool or anywhere else, looks unlikely, with Dortmund still in the Champions League and Bellingham keen to leave the club on good terms, but a summer switch is undoubtedly on the cards.

As reported by GOAL, Madrid appear to be at the front of the queue, with the England international interested in a switch to the Bernabeu, but Liverpool still hold out hope that they can convince him to join them instead.

  • Getty Images

    Enzo Fernandez (Benfica)

Another midfielder heavily linked has been Fernandez, who was one of the stars of Argentina’s World Cup triumph.

The 21-year-old only joined Benfica last summer, but reports in Portugal suggest he is already ready to make the next step, with Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea – who have been reportedly already offered over £106 million ($128m) – all credited with an interest.

Liverpool sources have, unlike with Bellingham, dismissed suggestions they are close to agreeing a deal, and have even played down the club’s interest, but it looks likely that Fernandez will be on the move before too long.

  • Getty

    Moises Caicedo (Brighton)

It’s all about midfielders as far as Liverpool are concerned, with their defence well stocked and Gakpo’s arrival significantly boosting their attacking options.

Caicedo is one that has caught the eye, the Brighton and Ecuador star emerging as one of the up-and-coming players of the Premier League over the past 12 months.

Liverpool scouts have been suitably impressed, and Brighton’s policy of developing players to sell on – see also; Ben White, Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella – means they would be confident of getting him out of the Amex Stadium.

The fee, however, could be a stumbling block, with Brighton likely to demand more than £50 million ($60m) for the talented 21-year-old.

    Sofyan Amrabat (Fiorentina)

The links with World Cup stars keep on coming, with Morocco’s Amrabat another to be heavily tipped for a move to Merseyside.

Amrabat, a specialist midfield destroyer as opposed to some of the all-rounders on this list, plays in Italy with Fiorentina and is valued at around £35m ($42m). At 26, he is approaching his prime and may feel the time has come to make a big move.

Whether Liverpool will be in the market, however, is another matter. With Fabinho very much established as their first-choice No.6, and with teenager Stefan Bajcetic emerging as a player with serious potential, their need for a player of Amrabat’s talents is less than it is for, say, a Bellingham or a Caicedo.

Nunez is back in the goals! Liverpool winners, losers and ratings as Thiago delivers masterclass in Dubai

Mohamed Salah was among those on target as Jurgen Klopp's side finished their Dubai Super Cup campaign with a 4-1 win over AC Milan

Darwin Nunez made a goalscoring return to action as Liverpool finished their Dubai Super Cup campaign with a 4-1 win over AC Milan.

The Uruguay international netted twice after replacing Roberto Firmino for the final half hour at the Al-Maktoum Stadium, on a night when both Mohamed Salah and Thiago Alcantara were also on target.

Salah gave the Reds a fifth-minute lead, finishing off after fine work from Joel Matip, but Alexis Saelemaekers' low strike drew the Serie A champions level.

Thiago restored Liverpool's advantage before half-time, arrowing a fine effort into the bottom corner from 25 yards, and Jurgen Klopp's side continued to dominate despite a raft of second-half changes.

One of them was Nunez, and he wrapped up the game in the final eight minutes, first converting coolly after a brilliant pass from fellow sub Bobby Clark, and then finishing from close range after good play from another teenage starlet, Ben Doak.

The game won, Liverpool then missed the chance to add a bonus point to their tally as they were beaten 4-3 in a penalty shootout, with Kostas Tsimikas and Naby Keita both denied from the spot.

Here, GOAL runs through the winners and losers from the Reds' final warm-up game before the season resumes…

    The Winners

    Thiago Alcantara:

In full flow, there are few footballers more pleasing on the eye than Thiago, and the Spaniard gave something of a masterclass here, displaying his full array of talent in front of a drooling audience.

The game was less than four minutes old when he picked up possession in his own half, flicked the ball up and speared a volleyed pass out to Andy Robertson. Soon after, he was spraying it to James Milner on the opposite flank. Fifty yards, pinpoint.

Just before half time, he was on the scoresheet, controlling the ball 25 yards out and firing an unstoppable low half-volley into the far corner. Technique personified, that one.

    Stefan Bajcetic:

Liverpool's midfield may be in need of an overhaul, but this lad certainly looks like he's ready to be part of its future.

At 18, Bajcetic has already begun to establish himself as part of Jurgen Klopp's first-team squad, and his showing here suggests there will be plenty more to come.

Pep Lijnders believes the Spanish U19 international has "all the attributes needed" to be a top-class No.6 for the Reds, and it is noticeable just how comfortable the former Celta Vigo prospect looks in a position which demands a lot in terms of concentration, maturity and discipline.

Bajcetic's positional play, his anticipation and ability to hoover up second balls, is already at a very high level, and he plays with a confidence, composure and awareness which is way beyond his tender years.

His physicality will improve, and will need to, as he gets older, and he must still overcome big hurdles if he is to become a permanent fixture in a side which will hope to be challenging for the biggest prizes in the coming years.

But so far, so very promising.

    Darwin Nunez:

Welcome back, Darwin! After disappointment in Qatar came a promising return to action in Dubai, as Nunez wasted no time at all in picking up where he left off for Liverpool prior to the World Cup.

The Uruguay international needed only half an hour to make his mark here, scoring twice to put the seal on a good victory for his side, and offering good omens for his manager ahead of the big restart.

Nunez had already stung the palms of Antonio Mirante, the veteran Milan goalkeeper, by the time he found himself on the end of a quite wonderful pass from youngster Bobby Clark. He stayed calm, slotting home low inside the near post to make it 3-1.

Then came a simple second, converted from close range after a driving run and selfless cross from Ben Doak, a 17-year-old whose early first-team forays suggest will have a big future in the game.

Nunez capped his promising cameo by scoring, somehow, from the spot in the penalty shootout, and with Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota both sidelined until well into the New Year, Liverpool need their £64m man to keep up this kind of form.

    The Losers

    Andy Robertson:

Milan's equaliser is not a goal Robertson will want to see again.

Having initially been unlucky to be caught just underneath the crossfield pass from left to right, the Scotland captain simply had to do more, one-v-one against Alexis Saelemaekers.

Instead, he allowed the Belgian international, who narrowly missed out on a place at the World Cup, to work his way into the box, where he was able to fire a low, left-footed strike past Caoimhin Kelleher into the corner.

Robertson had his hands up apologising soon after, as a wayward pass led to another Milan chance, and he will know he can play far better generally than he did here.

Mind you, best to get them out the way before the real stuff starts back up.

    Joe Gomez:

We already know who the centre-backs will be when Liverpool take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup next week.

With Virgil van Dijk not due back until Monday, and with Ibrahima Konate currently preparing for the World Cup final, it will be Gomez and Joel Matip, surely, who line up at the Etihad.

Klopp, then, will have wanted to see them look assured against strong opposition here, but while Matip looked the part, defending sharply and setting up the opening goal for Mohamed Salah, Gomez's afternoon was a little more concerning.

Where was he going, 90 seconds in, when Liverpool's defence was cut open by the most straightforward of passes through the middle of the field? Marko Lazetic let him off the hook with a poor finish, but Erling Haaland won't be quite so generous, one suspects.

Gomez has not had a great season so far – although he saved his best performance for City's visit to Anfield in October – and you'd have to say he's fourth-choice at present, with Van Dijk, Konate and Matip all offering greater stability and consistency.

    Curtis Jones:

Liverpool's home-grown midfielder was nowhere to be seen here, as his season of frustration continues.

Jones has managed only six appearances, and only two starts, since being diagnosed with a stress reaction in his tibia following the Community Shield in July, and though he was part of the 33-man squad which travelled to Dubai, he has not been able to train fully and therefore played no part in either of the Reds' fixtures.

Sources have told GOAL that the club are simply being cautious with the 21-year-old – "managing his load," as one put it – but with midfield options already thin on the ground, and games coming thick and fast once the season restarts next week, Jones once more finds himself playing catch-up.

    Liverpool Ratings: Defence

    Caoimhin Kelleher (6/10):

Helpless with the goal. Otherwise untroubled. Distribution was good.

    James Milner (7/10):

Showed all his class and experience at full-back, where he defended with poise and attacked with regularity.

    Joel Matip (7/10):

Marauding Matip is back! Great burst forward to create the opening goal for Salah. Defended well on the front foot.

    Joe Gomez (5/10):

Still doesn't look entirely comfortable. Caught out by a straight pass inside two minutes, and his distribution was scratchy.

    Andy Robertson (5/10):

Caught out for the Milan equaliser and delivered a few loose passes. Can play better.

A joy to watch at times with his passing and technique. Beautiful goal to make it 2-1.

Always bright, and rarely wasteful. Liverpool's best stuff came when he got involved.
