Andrew Symonds has revealed the depth of his lows during a troubled year that involved twice being suspended from Australia’s teams. Symonds, who has also battled a knee injury and various off-field controversies, said he had experienced “bad days and really bad days” during the summer, including bouts of binge drinking.”They didn’t sit me down and tell me I was diagnosed with depression,” Symonds told the Sunday Telegraph. “But I was affected somehow … I had bad days and really bad days, and then I had great days and really great weeks.”It’s all part of my personal development and improving. These bushfires and this terrorism stuff towards the Sri Lankans, it puts things into perspective as to what’s important. Walking out there and scoring no runs is pretty unimportant if you have had your house burnt down and you have lost your family. Things like that have helped me realise what’s important in life.”Symonds has had regular counselling sessions since being sent home from Darwin before the Bangladesh one-day series last year, and he was also stopped from being part of the South Africa Test tour. “I’ve become more tolerant of the way I’ve got to accept I’ve got to live,” he said. That’s the thing that used to frustrate me. I enjoy it [counselling]. It’s really helped. I’ll see it right through because it’s been great for me.”Symonds said there were times during the season when he was “drinking too much and binge drinking, using it as an out or as an excuse if I’d had a bad day”. “The answer for me is controlling it and knowing when to have a beer and what’s appropriate,” he said. “I believe I’ve done that well now.”He also lost money in the collapse of a financial firm he invested in and broke up with his girlfriend during the season. However, the pair has reunited and he is now looking towards the Ashes.”If I was to never play for cricket for Australia again, that’s something I could live with,” he said. “But it’s something I’m not prepared to give up trying to achieve.”

SAFC fans laud Harris

Sunderland fans have showered Will Harris in praise after he scored a hat-trick for their U23 side against Wolves on Monday.

The Black Cats’ senior side have enjoyed a fantastic start to the 2021/22 campaign. They are currently second in the League One table, level on points with leaders Wigan Athletic, and have won six of their opening eight league matches (BBC). They have also safely navigated a passage through to the fourth round of the League Cup.

Their development squad have not enjoyed as much success, winning just two of their opening six Premier League 2 matches. However, they put in an impressive display to beat Wolves 3-1, and Harris was in top form as he bagged three times to give his side the win.

Sunderland’s official Twitter account provided regular updates on the match, and they attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Cássio; Fagner, Balbuena, Pablo e Guilherme Arana; Gabriel e Maycon; Jadson, Rodriguinho e Romero; Jô.

O time marcou 15 gols e sofreu apenas três.

England await Flintoff scan

Andrew Flintoff will undergo a medical scan today in Barbados to find out the extent of his hip injury

Andrew Flintoff will undergo a scan in Barbados on Friday to find outthe extent of his hip injury. Flintoff, who is suspected to have amuscle tear, bowled through the pain on the final day of the thirdTest in Antigua, sending down 12 overs as West Indies squeezed out a draw. However, interim coach Andy Flower conceded the allrounder is struggling to be fit for the fourth Test at Kensington Oval, which starts on February 26.With England pushing for a series-levelling win in Antigua, Flintoff put in the extra effort in a six-over spell after tea, even touching 90mph, which went against the medical advice to bowl within himself. Flower admitted he was worried that the allrounder had harmed his long-term prospects. “I was very concerned about him doing himself lasting damage but I don’t think that is the case luckily,” he said. “Before the day started there was a line that he and Strauss had to walk between using him when we needed him and not doing himself lasting damage.”I think they did that but we will find out tomorrow when we get the scan results. It is quite likely he might be out of the next Test.”The importance of Flintoff’s presence for England is reflected by thefact that the ECB are flying in two players, fast bowler Amjad Khan and batting allrounder Ravi Bopara, all the way from New Zealand – where they were touring with the England Lions squad – as cover. What makes replacing Flintoff more difficult is the possible absence of wicketkeeper Matt Prior, who would be a candidate to bat at No. 6. Prior is due to fly home for the birth of his child straight after the third Test finishes on March 2, but he would leave the tour if his wife, Emily, goes into labour before the match.”He [Prior] could bat six and we could play five specialist bowlers even if Flintoff wasn’t playing and that is one of the options available,” Flower said. “If the baby arrives early then he will leave but if he starts the Test, he will finish it.”Part of the reason we have called up Amjad and Ravi is because if we decided to play six batsmen we wouldn’t have anyone in reserve, so if someone bust a finger in the two-day game [the warm-up before the Test], we wouldn’t be able to play our six batsmen,” Flower explained. “On the other hand if he is out we would be one seamer down, so we have got Amjad Khan in.”Flower said there will still concerns over left-armer Ryan Sidebottom, whois struggling with a chronic Achilles problem, but it is clearly Flintoff who is topping the list of walking wounded. This is Flintoff’s second injury setback on the tour after he suffered a slight side strain in the opening warm-up match against a St Kitts Invitational XI. He was withdrawn from that game as a precaution and didn’t have any further cricket ahead of the first Test.Flintoff’s fitness issues – he returned to the Test side after an18-month absence last year – could also put a doubt over hisparticipation in the IPL. He has been signed for record US$1.55million fee by the Chennai Super Kings. Flower said the team weremonitoring the workload of the players, especially Flintoff.”He’s a vital ingredient of English cricket and we wouldn’t want oneof our best assets to be poorly used. He is a sensible bloke and wewill need some sensible negotiation over the next few weeks.”The ECB are likely to ensure its contracted players pass fitness testsbefore competing in the IPL. “In the short term it might not be tooserious, it might be a significant problem,” Flower said. “England ishis priority, so we will monitor it closer to the time and it is tooearly to say ‘yay or nay’ on that one.”He’s a mature adult and he will make any decision along with the ECB.”

Leeds’ Tyler Roberts was shocking vs Fulham

Leeds United sealed their path into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup thanks to a penalty shoot-out victory over Fulham on Tuesday night.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side had Illan Meslier to thank as the French goalkeeper denied Rodrigo Muniz in sudden death to send the Whites home happy.

But while Leeds may have booked their passage into the next round of the competition, one man who really let his manager down with a woeful display was Tyler Roberts.

One of a number of senior, or at least established first-team players, on the pitch as Bielsa went with a fairly strong starting line-up, the Welshman looked completely off the pace as he led the line.

As per Sofascore, he made just four successful passes in the time that he was on the pitch, while he only had 14 touches too – both of those actually being lower than goalkeeper Illan Meslier, and a real indication of how he struggled to get into the game.

The Welshman also lost 50% of his duels, including the only one he contested in the air, and it was no surprise that after just 55 minutes on the clock, he was subbed off by Bielsa for Adam Forshaw.

And, writing in his post-match player ratings for Leeds Live, Beren Cross gave him a five, saying: “Tried to ask questions of the Fulham defence, but only got the one opening he wanted. Was well charged down by Marek Rodak.”

It was a performance that raises yet more serious questions about whether he’s actually good enough to be competing for a Leeds team who want to re-establish themselves as a Premier League force, especially when you consider he’s now yet to score or assist in seven games this campaign.

Roberts hardly set the world alight at Elland Road last season too – he managed just one goal and provided two assists in 27 top-flight matches – despite the fact the 22-year-old seems to be a clear favourite of Bielsa’s (one run of form saw him start 12 consecutive games in the Premier League).

The Leeds boss himself said: “He has played many games in a row and has shown he has the resources to justify his starting position in the team. He has virtues that are very difficult to find in football at the moment. He has all the resources necessary to unbalance offensively and still has a lot to grow to make these attempts useful and efficient.”

Well, on Tuesday night, Roberts did nothing to prove why he’s a starting calibre player for Leeds, and why his time in the team might well be up.

Meanwhile, this Leeds star was Bielsa’s real hero vs Fulham…

Canada in crisis as CEO ousted

Cricket Canada has been thrown into confusion after the announcement that chief executive Atul Ahuja had been replaced

Cricinfo staff30-Jan-2009Cricket Canada has been thrown into confusion after the announcement that chief executive Atul Ahuja has been removed from office and replaced on an interim basis by Ingleton Liburd, the cricket development officer and a former national captain.Rumours had been circulating for two days that Ahuja’s contract had been terminated following a major falling-out with Ben Sennick, the board’s chairman. Other than a terse statement which made almost no reference to Ahuja other than to say he was being replaced, nobody from Cricket Canada was available for comment.”Sennik would know best why the executive committee were motivated to take this step,” Ahuja told Cricinfo. “Per the contract, in year two of the two-year contract, termination without cause entails two months’ compensation, and I have received that. However, significant amounts relating to incentive compensation, expenses and vacation pay remain outstanding.”Liburd does not appear to be a long-term option for a board which still harbours ambitions of expanding the game internally and becoming a major player among the Associates internationally. Prior to joining Cricket Canada in 2008, he served as president of the St Kitts Cricket Association and as a territorial development officer for the West Indies Cricket Board.”Ingleton has a tremendous knowledge of the game of cricket and has demonstrated his leadership skills throughout his association with the game”, Sennik said. “On behalf of the Cricket Canada board of directors, we are pleased to have Ingleton as a key part of our team as we continue to enhance cricket’s appeal across Canada at the professional and community levels.”

O GEPE supervisiona a revista.

Sarwan calls on young guns to fire

West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan has stressed on the youngsters improving their performances if they are to be a permanent feature in the squad.

West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan has said the youngsters in the squad need to improve their performances if they are to be a permanent feature.”We’re the most experienced and it’s important we try to give the young players as much support as we can but it’s important for them to learn as well,” the former captain said. “It’s a great chance for them to cement a place in the team and that should be the biggest goal for them, striving to be better players. We’ve already spoken to them, but it’s a matter of them seizing the opportunity.”Sarwan mentioned no names but at least nine of the 15-man squad, currently touring New Zealand, are playing for their immediate, some for their long-term, futures.Sewnarine Chattergoon has yet to put together a significant innings since introduced as the latest in the long line of opening batsman last season in the home series against Sri Lanka and Australia this year.Xavier Marshall is more likely to be retained for the forthcoming series against England in the Caribbean, either as Gayle’s opening partner or separating Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the middle order. But runs in the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand will boost his confidence.Shawn Findlay who, given his modest record for Jamaica, was a surprise choice when included in the ODI series against Australia, is an electric outfielder but seems out of his depth at this level in his primary role as left-hand batsman.Carlton Baugh has almost had the last of his many chances as wicketkeeper-batsman. It is a position that Denesh Ramdin appeared to have claimed as his own until his batting declined so markedly that it allowed Baugh to return. Runs over the coming five matches are important for his status.Kieron Pollard’s star has pitched since his sensational entry into first-class cricket two seasons ago when his six-hitting put spectators in danger and embarrassed bowlers. His boundary-filled hundreds against Barbados and the Leeward Islands earned him a place in the World Cup squad but he has found runs, far less sixes, hard to come by since then. Still, he is only 20, massively built and powerful and clearly talented. As much as anyone, he can heed Sarwan’s words about learning, striving to be better players and seizing the opportunity.Darren Sammy, perhaps not as dynamic but an honest and intelligent all-rounder already with a taste of Test and ODI success, is an alternative not far away from a recall.
Daren Powell is surely on his way out. He is an enthusiastic competitor but it is an extravagance to pay 46 runs a wicket in Tests as he does © AFP
After six years, 32 Tests and 50 ODIs, Daren Powell is surely on his way out. He is an enthusiastic competitor but it is an extravagance to pay 46 runs a wicket in Tests as he does. Only a cupboard bare of fast bowlers and the strange selectorial reservations about spinners have kept him going.New fast bowlers should be lining up to fill his spot and potential spinners continuing to wait patiently to be given their due.Lionel Baker, the young Montserratian, is the first new fast bowler since Jerome Taylor, Fidel Edwards and Ravi Rampaul five years ago. The first two now lead the attack, Rampaul has been so unlucky with injuries his prospects are doubtful. The door is open for the new crop, as it always is with West Indies selectors. Baker has been ushered through it but it will take time to establish whether his stay will be permanent. Sulieman Benn and Nikita Miller, two left-armers of different heights and methods, are the latest spinners on the roller coaster. The selectors have surely got them wrong way round, using the beanpole Benn for the Tests and the diminutive Miller in the ODIS.The former is flat through the air, steady in control and gains bounce, attributes more effective in the shorter (Twenty20 even) than the longer form. He has suffered the habitual fate of those of his ilk, given one Test here, one Test there along with three Twenty20s. No wonder he is still not sure of his role.Miller, who depends more on flight and turn, has so far been confined to the ODIs where he can hardly express himself properly. The decision to choose Benn for the Tests and the Twenty20s in New Zealand, but replace him for the one-dayers would be confusing were it not a West Indies selection. While the five ODIs are in progress, the first-class season would have started back home. Results from both will shape the composition of the team for the series against England in February and March and even beyond.
