Glasgow Rangers are interested in a deal to bring Wesley Hoedt to Ibrox in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Record, who claim that Ross Wilson sent scouts to watch the centre-back in action for Anderlecht last weekend ahead of a potential move for the 27-year-old in the winter market.

A further report by Ibrox Noise also suggested that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side are keeping a very close eye on the defender, who already holds a relationship with three of the current Rangers staff – Wilson, who signed the defender for Southampton, Kemar Roofe, who played with the centre-back at Anderlecht, and Van Bronckhorst himself, a compatriot of Hoedt.

Fans will fume

Considering just how poor a signing for Southampton Hoedt proved to be, the news that Wilson appears to once again be targeting a move for the 27-year-old is surely something that will make Rangers fans fume.

Indeed, following his £15m move to St. Mary’s back in 2017, the centre-back went on to make just 45 appearances for the Premier League side, with Ralph Hasenhuttl sending the defender out on loan to clubs such as Celta Vigo, Royal Antwerp and Lazio – the latter of whom rejected the chance to make the Netherlands international’s temporary switch a €5m (£4m) permanent deal this summer.

The defender himself even admitted Wilson’s decision to sign him for Saints was a mistake, stating: “[Hasenhuttl] told me he wanted to give me a second chance, but I never got one to begin with. I trained hard for six weeks, but it was for nothing. After another chat with him, I decided to prove my worth elsewhere.

“I made a mistake [leaving Lazio]. I had a five-year contract with them. Italian football culture is very professional, but everyone wants to play in the best league in the world, the Premier League, and Southampton offered me a contract that I couldn’t refuse. Unfortunately, the club had two bad seasons and things didn’t go as I thought they would.”

As such, while it is true the £13k-per-week centre-back is enjoying a much better time of it at Anderlecht, averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.01 over his 16 Pro League appearances this season, considering just how badly things turned out for Hoedt last time he was in the UK, the signing of the defender would very much appear to be a risk that is not worth taking for Wilson.

But having more games that matter at the tail-end of the summer is worthwhile and the answer could lie in abolishing bonus points to make winning more vital. However, those debates can carry on over the winter and into next summer. For now Essex can reflect on a job well done, while Northamptonshire consider what might have been.

Many Southampton fans have been slamming the performance of Ibrahima Diallo in their 2-1 loss at Norwich City on Saturday.

After a promising start with Che Adams giving the Saints the lead inside the first four minutes, the visitors were almost immediately pegged back by Teemu Pukki, before Grant Hanley gave the hosts all three points with a header from a second half corner kick.

Diallo started the match well but badly tailed off in the second half. Asked to play as a right midfielder by Ralph Hasenhuttl, he failed to record a shot, lost six of his 12 duels and made only one accurate cross throughout the match, while he was also guilty of losing possession 12 times, the joint-sixth most out of any of his teammates at Carrow Road (SofaScore).

Southampton fans slam Diallo

These Southampton supporters slammed the 22-year-old’s performance on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that he was ‘hopeless’ against Norwich:

Andrew Strauss’s captaincy has been criticised during the series for being defensive and too slow to make changes. He couldn’t be accused of that today. After the lunch/rain break he could have played safe and kept on Graeme Swann, who created danger before the interval with his offspin. Strauss preferred Stuart Broad and was rewarded with five wickets in 47 deliveries from the allrounder. Clark wasn’t as good humoured, walking off with a lot of muttering in Rauf’s direction after he was hit on the pad flap and taken at short leg. Eddie Howe will be in the dugout for the first time since being named as the permanent successor to Steve Bruce and he will be looking for a reaction from the players on the pitch.

The Magpies were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton last time out in the top flight, with Graeme Jones in charge that evening, and the former Bournemouth boss could look to stamp his personality on the side following that result.

How many changes will Howe make to the team? Here is our predicted XI…

We are predicting that he will make three alternations to the team which started at Brighton, with Jamal Lewis, Fabian Schar and Joe Willock all coming in today.

Along with the change in personnel, Howe could deploy a 4-3-3 formation. Jones lined up with a 5-4-1 against Brighton and looked to set up defensively. However, the ex-Cherries boss may want his side to be on the front foot and trying to attack the opposition, which is why 4-3-3 could be implemented from the start.

With this formation, a change in defence will be required. We published an article explaining why Fabian Schar must be unleashed against the Bees and this means that two of the centre-backs who started against Brighton need to be dropped – Ciaran Clark and Emil Krafth, neither of whom has been especially convincing of late. This leaves Schar and captain Jamaal Lascelles as the two centre-backs to start Howe’s reign at St James’ Park.

At left-back, Jamal Lewis could come in for his first start of the season in place of Matt Ritchie. The Scottish defender played under Howe at Bournemouth but he has been in patchy form of late – with SofaScore ratings of 6.4 and 6.3 against Tottenham and Chelsea respectively – and it could be time for Lewis to get a chance to shine.

The former Norwich man has only made one appearance in the league this season, which came off the bench, and Howe’s arrival has provided a clean slate for him. He could be given an opportunity to come in and show that he can perform to a higher level than Ritchie of late, with the £44k-per-week dud set to be axed from the starting XI.

Finally, Joe Willock could return to bolster the midfield, coming in to replace Krafth and facilitate the change in formation. The ex-Arsenal man scored eight Premier League goals during his loan spell on Tyneside in the second half of last season and could provide a goalscoring threat from midfield to improve Newcastle’s chances of finding the net, which is why he could be selected in the team today.
