Conte’s new Fabregas: Rodrigo Bentancur

Tottenham Hotspur have a new midfielder in Rodrigo Bentancur after he signed for the north London outfit in an initial £15.9m swoop from Juventus on deadline day.

Spurs’ new man

As per the BBC, the Uruguay international – who scored for his national team late on Tuesday night in their World Cup qualifying win over Venezuela – has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal that could rise by £5m through add-ons.

He joins alongside fellow teammate Dejan Kulusevski, who has arrived on an initial loan costing £8.3m with an option to buy around £29.3m.

The 24-year-old isn’t expected to make it back to Hotspur Way in time for Saturday night’s FA Cup clash with Brighton and Hove Albion but he is likely to be in line for a debut in a week’s time when Spurs host Southampton in the Premier League.

Fabregas figure

Bentancur isn’t the creative option that Spurs have been crying out for but the Italian head coach has never really looked for someone in that calibre throughout his managerial career.

Take Cesc Fabregas for example.

Under Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge, the former Arsenal midfielder provided the creativity they needed to win the title in 2014/15. It was summed up by a phenomenal assist on debut that had even opposition manager Sean Dyche purring.

“The Fabregas pass is arguably the best I’ve seen in a long, long time because of the control, the awareness, the quality and shape of the pass — it lands perfectly for him (Andre Schurrle) to guide it into the goal.”

He went on to register a whopping 18 assists in that campaign.

But when Conte took the dugout the following year, he was largely resigned to the bench, barely featuring during another title-winning triumph. However, as he came around to the 52-year-old’s demands – that being a key cog in his system rather than the sole creator.

“You were a bit like a perfect machine — no freedom, but everybody knows what everybody needs to do,” Fabregas once revealed.

This is what Conte will be getting from Bentancur, something that the likes of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso were probably not willing to give up, hence their departures on loan on deadline day.

Indeed, this has been backed up by The Athletic’s Italian football expert James Horncastle, who said:

“He’ll do a lot of the dirty work that will allow Spurs’ flair players to do their best work, and certainly having a lot of blue-collar players in the Conte team – he’s always valued players like that.”

The Uruguayan is certainly a reliable and durable option in the heart of the pitch, one capable of protecting the backline efficiently. No player at Juventus had managed more interceptions (73) and tackles (95) combined (168) than him since the start of the 2020/21 season.

Smarter Scout describe him as an “aggressive defender who’s an excellent tackler”, whilst Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport have previously described him as an “extraordinary talent” (in quotes sourced by football.london).

The £22.5m-rated beast could well emerge as Conte’s new Fabregas in north London this season.

West Ham: Moyes’ failed January transfer XI

Despite the fact that David Moyes identified a number of areas within his West Ham United squad that needed strengthening in the January transfer window, the 58-year-old ultimately failed to bring any fresh faces to the London Stadium prior to Monday evening’s deadline.

Indeed, it was reported that the Scot wanted to sign at least a new left-back, centre-back and centre-forward last month, with the club being linked with a host of different players in all three positions throughout January.

However, despite having 31 days to do business, West Ham appeared to leave the vast majority of their moves until the final day of the market, something that – rather unsurprisingly – saw the Premier League side exit the window in exactly the same condition they entered it.

So, what could West Ham’s starting XI have looked like if Moyes had managed to land his top targets last month? Here’s what we think.

While West Ham were obviously linked with more players than we have included in our failed transfer XI, including Leeds United duo Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, as well as Atalanta centre-forward Duvan Zapata, we have decided to focus on the players for whom moves seemed to be most likely last month.

At centre-back, should West Ham have coughed up what looked to be an extremely reasonable £15m for Marseille’s Duje Caleta-Car, the 25-year-old would have undoubtedly started ahead of the likes of £67k-per-week Issa Diop – who Stuart Pearce dubbed a “colossus” – and Craig Dawson alongside Kurt Zouma in the heart of the Hammers backline.

The second missed signing comes at left-back, with RMC Sport reporting that the Irons did not make a move for the £8.1m-rated Layvin Kurzawa on deadline day as Moyes could not find Arthur Masuaku a move away from the club.

In attacking midfield, West Ham once again failed to get a deal over the line for Jesse Lingard, after Manchester United blocked both the Hammers’ and Newcastle United’s late moves for the England international – who, as he proved last season, would have made an excellent addition to the Irons’ attacking arsenal.

Finally, the last failed transfer was for Benfica hotshot Darwin Nunez, the centre-forward who appeared to be Moyes’ top target in the position as the window drew to a close, with the Scot submitting a €50m (£41.5m) offer for the 22-year-old.

Indeed, the Uruguay international would have arguably been an upgrade on Michail Antonio in leading the line for the Hammers, however, once again, a move for the £28.8m-rated sensation fell through at the 11th hour.

As such, while it would have been an extremely unlikely scenario in which the club landed all four of these signings in January, should Moyes and the West Ham board have truly wished to give themselves the best possible chance of securing a top-four finish this season, it is undeniable that these four additions to the Irons’ starting XI would have helped to fire them to the Champions League places come the end of the current campaign.

Kieswetter impresses in Somerset win

Scorecard
Craig Kieswetter returned to the Somerset team with a half-century as the Group A leaders maintained their successful Clydesdale Bank record with a 71-run win over Worcestershire at Bath. A festival crowd of around 3,000, basking in hot sunshine, saw the England World Twenty20 hero hit 52, with three sixes and three fours, in a Somerset total of 235 for 9. Zander de Bruyn made 55, and Ben Phillips 51 not out, his first one-day half-century.That proved too much for the Royals on an unpredictable pitch, as they subsided from 63 for 1 to 164 all out, Mark Turner taking a career best 4 for 36 from 7.4 overs. Somerset have now won all five of their group matches, and already look hot favourites to reach the semi-finals.Kieswetter received a warm ovation from spectators when opening the Somerset innings after they had lost the toss, and soon helped them make up for the early losses of Marcus Trescothick and Nick Compton. He shared a third-wicket stand of 86 with de Bruyn, and was soon demonstrating the clean hitting that had earned him the Man of the Match award in the World Twenty20 final seven days earlier.Having faced 63 balls, Kieswetter got a leading edge to Imran Arif and was caught at cover. When the in-form James Hildreth followed for a duck and De Bruyn was caughtbehind having hit five fours and two sixes, Somerset were 125 for 5.Worcestershire continued to claim wickets, but the match was taken away from them by 34-year-old Phillips, who hammered seven fours and a six in 34 balls. Daryl Mitchell was the pick of the Royals’ attack, with 2 for 30 from his eight overs. When Vikram Solanki fell to the first ball of the Royals’ reply, a sharp lifter from Turner, their struggles in the competition looked set to continue. Phil Jaques and Moeen Ali briefly raised hopes with a stand of 63, but once Jaques was well caught by Murali Kartik attempting to pull Turner, there was a steady procession of batsmen.Peter Trego produced a delightful slower ball to york Alexei Kervezee for 19, and soon it was 141 for 8. Kieswetter’s glovework was nowhere near as impressive as his batting, and the 22-year-old still has work to do on his keeping if he wants to challenge Matt Prior for his Test place.

Saints could make last gasp Johnstone bid

As per a report in The Mirror’s print edition (28.01.21, pg. 58, via The 72), some transfer news has come out of Southampton as the club could now make a last gasp bid to sign West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

The Lowdown: Saints eyeing moves…

Over this last week of the transfer window, the Saints have been tipped with late moves through reliable sources in the press as they aim to back manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano lifted the lid on Southampton’s willingness to table a £25 million bid to sign loanee Armando Broja on a permanent deal from Chelsea (Twitter).

Football.london correspondent Adam Newson also claimed that the south coast side, and by extension their transfer chief Martin Semmens, are attempting to sign another Blues sensation in midfielder Tino Anjorin (Twitter).

Now, with more news emerging on Southampton’s end-of-window transfer plans, The Mirror have an update involving England international Johnstone.

The Latest: Saints could make last gasp Johnstone bid…

As per their information, via The 72, Hasenhuttl’s side ‘could make a last minute move’ to sign the 28-year-old this month with his Baggies contract runs out at the end of 2021/2022.

West Brom are set to lose the shot-stopper as a free agent in the summer as things stand, with January coming as one last chance to potentially make a small profit off his sale.

The Championship side’s manager, Valerien Ismael, confirmed that he axed Johnstone from his last squad to face Preston North End – revealing it was due to a behind-the-scenes ‘issue’.

After this internal development, The Mirror claim Southampton, West Ham and Spurs have been put on alert and could bid before the deadline.

The Verdict: Get it done?

There is little denying Johnstone would be a stellar capture for Semmens considering his pedigree, age and the fact he is homegrown.

Hailed for his form in the Premier League with West Brom last season, this drew the attention of Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, who subsequently handed the player his first England call-up.

Wolverhampton Wanderers legend Steve Bull lauded Johnstone as a ‘world class goalkeeper’ when speaking to This is Futbol last year – coming as even more evidence he would be a fine capture at St. Mary’s Stadium.

At just 28, Johnstone would also provide Hasenhuttl a long-term solution to his goalkeeping conundrum with Willy Caballero, Frazer Forster and Alex McCarthy all set to leave as free agents in the summer as things stand.
