Carter and Clarke damage Essex

Essex were indebted to tail-enders Bryce McGain and Tony Palladino for achieving some semblance of respectability in their County Championship battle against Warwickshire at Southend

Essex were indebted to tail-enders Bryce McGain and Tony Palladino for achieving some semblance of respectability in their County Championship battle against Warwickshire at Southend. Between them they were responsible for over a third of Essex’s total of 149 for 9 before rain in mid-afternoon washed out further play.Coming together at 91 for 8, Palladino and McGain added a valuable 43 before the Australian fell lbw to Rikki Clarke for 24 spanning 63 deliveries. Before the rain came Palladino, in his first Championship outing of the summer, had struck 31 that included five fours. The only other batsman to hold up Warwickshire for any length of time was Matt Walker who battled the way through 19 overs in making 29 from 56 balls. He was finally undone by Chris Woakes, another lbw victim, on a day when the visiting seam attack were the dominant force.Their ability to swing the ball proved the decisive factor as bottom-of-the-table Warwickshire enjoyed one of their more successful days in the field against opponents also struggling to preserve their First Division status. After Woakes trapped Mark Pettini lbw for a single with the 14th ball of the match, Neil Carter was to pile further misery on Essex with a devastating spell that brought him three wickets in the space of eight deliveries at a personal cost of two runs. Tom Westley edged to Darren Maddy in the slips, Jaik Mickleburgh was bowled and Ravi Bopara fell lbw for just a single. That left Essex 31 for 4 and three runs later captain James Foster was left regretting his decision to bat even more when he became another victim of Clarke. Clarke and Carter had so far picked up three for 26 and three for 48 respectively, while Woakes had figures of 2 for 39.The one bit of encouraging news for Essex is that Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria is likely to play in the Friends Provident Twenty20 finals day at the Rose Bowl on August 14. Kaneria has been axed from the Pakistan Test squad currently touring England and Essex are planning to re-register him for the remainder of the season. They are now seeking approval from the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Spurs: Antonio Conte must drop Davinson Sanchez

After a disappointing defeat in midweek, Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur side once again failed to stake a claim on a top-four place with another lacklustre performance on Sunday, with Spurs losing out 2-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Following the match, the 52-year-old manager admitted that, on current form, it will be a near-impossible task for Tottenham to qualify for Champions League football next season, stating: “When you lose two games at home and against Chelsea – for a team that wants to qualify for the Champions League, it’s impossible to happen.

“We know we have to fight to build something important with the situation but it’s important to know the situation. Maybe our fans shouldn’t be disappointed with the defeat – instead, they should try and push us and stay behind us.”

However, aside from Spurs fans getting behind their team, there are also a number of tangible changes that could be made on the part of the Italian which could help to improve Tottenham’s overall level of performance – one of which would undoubtedly be the dropping of Davinson Sanchez.

Sanchez must never play for Conte again

Having joined Spurs in what was a club-record £42m deal back in the summer of 2017, four and a half years on, the 25-year-old is not even one of the best centre-backs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, let alone “one of the best centre-backs in the world” – as Mauricio Pochettino had predicted the Colombia international would become.

Indeed, after making £27m-rated defender has since seen his game time generally become more limited with each passing season – featuring in just 18 league fixtures last term.

And, considering just how poor the £65k-per-week “liability” – in the words of Kenny Cunningham – has been in recent weeks, it is not difficult to see why Sanchez is not considered a nailed-on starter in North London.

Indeed, the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick awarded the centre-back a four in his player ratings in the 3-2 loss against Southampton on Wednesday, writing that the 25-year-old was “desperately shaky,” produced “wobble after wobble” and was “dragged out of position for Saints’ first goal.”

The defender earned a similar review for his display against Wolves, once again being handed an extremely disappointing four in Kilpatrick’s ratings, with the journalist stating of the Colombian: “Lucky to keep his place after Wednesday’s horror-show against Southampton and no better here. What has Joe Rodon got to do to get a chance?”

As Kilpatrick suggests, after two performances that could well have cost his side dearly in the top-four race, it would appear an extremely sensible move for Conte to replace Sanchez with Rodon going forwards.

And, with the 25-year-old who Jamie O’Hara recently labelled “embarrassing” having been linked with a move away from the club last summer, should Rodon impress upon a potential step up to the first team, it would also seem a wise move for Spurs to finally cut their losses on the defender at the end of the season – as Sanchez has quite clearly proven that he is not of the standard required for Tottenham – leading us to believe the centre-back who Darren Bent claimed makes “mistake after mistake” must not play for Conte again.

South Africa clean sweep five-match series

An unbeaten ton from Zimbabwe captain Peter Moor was not enough to stretch South Africa who won the fifth match easily to complete a 5-0 drubbing of the hosts in the Youth ODI series

Scorecard
An unbeaten ton from captain Peter Moor led a creditable recovery for Zimbabwe Under-19s after a disastrous start, but it was not enough to stretch South Africa who won the fifth match easily to complete a 5-0 drubbing of the hosts in the Youth ODI series.South Africa inserted Zimbabwe and tormented them with the new ball, as Chad Fortune and Rabian Engelbrecht reduced them to 10 for 3 in the fifth over. The visitors would have harboured hopes of rolling Zimbabwe over for another paltry score, but Moor was determined to change the pattern observed through the series. He counter-attacked in style, cracking five fours and two sixes to bring up 50 in 48 balls. Tinotenda Mutombodzi did the sensible thing by giving his captain the strike in an 85-run stand for the fifth-wicket towards which Mutombodzi contributed 28. Nathan Waller who came next stepped up a gear as Moor raised 70 in his company in 13 overs. Riyaad Henry who suffered the most from the onslaught managed to dismiss Waller in the 47th over. That hampered Zimbabwe’s quest to push on towards the end, with Moor slowing in the latter stages of his innings. He finished with 116 off 120 balls, as Zimbabwe cobbled up a score of 218.Zimbabwe’s hopes of grinding out a comsolation win were quashed in clinical style by South Africa’s openers Quinton de Kock and Keaton Jennings. The hosts’ attack was unable to make an impression as the two batsmen went about their job without fuss, mindful of the manageable asking rate. The verdict was all but sealed by the time they were seperated at 159 in the 35th over, de Kock missing a ton by six runs. Jennings was slower in his scoring and finished unbeaten on 84 off 131 balls when the win was sealed. There was some consolation for Moor, whose innings earned him the Man-of-the-Match award, and he was keen on avenging his side’s defeat in the two Twenty20 games to be played on Monday. “We will take note of the positives from this series and surely use them in the next game. We came out more motivated and determined and the Twenty20 matches will be the last port of call for us to implement what we learnt,” the Zimbabwe captain said.

Rangers: Gers under pressure over Aribo

Rangers are facing a situation whereby they may ‘have to cash in’ on Joe Aribo this summer, Pete O’Rourke has told Give Me Sport.

The lowdown

Aribo is into the final 18 months of the contract he signed on his arrival from Charlton Athletic in 2019.

His current deal reportedly sees him bank £14,000 per week, which ranks outside the club’s top ten earners (via Salary Sport).

If Aribo were to stay at Rangers beyond the summer but refuse to sign a new deal, he’d be in a position to negotiate pre-contract terms with a foreign club from January 1.

And Football Insider reported last autumn that English Premier League side Crystal Palace are ‘keeping tabs’ on the midfielder.

Analyst Danny Corcoran believes he’s ‘definitely too good’ for the Scottish Premiership, noting that ‘he just waltzes past people like he isn’t even trying’.

The latest

O’Rourke believes Aribo’s future could effectively be decided in the months between now and July this year.

“It puts the pressure on Rangers maybe to have to cash in on him in the summer if they’re not able to agree on a deal,” the journalist said.

The verdict

Losing Aribo would be a real blow for Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Rangers.

He started five of their six Europa League group stage matches and has been selected for 23 of their 26 league games, indicating that he’s a key player at Ibrox.

The 25-year-old boasts a strong return of six goals and six assists in his 36 outings across all competitions.

But according to Transfermarkt, at £9million, he’s one of their three most valuable assets, and so from a business point of view, it simply wouldn’t make a sense to risk losing him for free.

When you consider the extent of Rangers’ losses, £23.5million for the year, that ‘pressure’ O’Rourke talks about becomes even greater.

In other news, Fabrizio Romano has dropped a big update on Amad Diallo.

Flower gives Strauss full one-day support

England coach Andy Flower has given Andrew Strauss a ringing endorsement over his captaincy of the one-day side

England coach Andy Flower has given Andrew Strauss a ringing endorsement over his captaincy of the one-day side ahead of the series against Australia later this month following speculation that the leadership position may be under debate.Comments by Geoff Miller, the national selector, on Sunday didn’t appear to give Strauss unequivocal support when he said: “If we think it is right to go elsewhere we will do that.” Following the victory against Bangladesh at Old Trafford, Strauss was quizzed about his position but insisted he wasn’t aware of Miller’s comments and was preparing to lead the one-day team against Scotland on June 19 followed by five matches against Australia and a series against Bangladesh.Flower was surprised that Strauss had been asked to defend his position and was in no doubt that he would be the captain. “He did not mention any of that to me last night,” Flower said. “Andrew Strauss will be captaining in the one-dayers.”England’s triumphant Twenty20 campaign in the Caribbean has led to calls for the same side to be fielded in the 50-over format, but Flower is comfortable with Strauss’s role in one-day cricket and believes he had an impact on the success in the shortest format.”He is a fine leader and a fine batsman,” he said. “I think in the last 12 months he has done some really good things for us in one-day cricket. He bats aggressively up front. His specialist area is facing the quick bowling.”He has been the architect of the attacking type of cricket England’s one-day side has been playing. In a way, he was the catalyst for the attacking cricket we have been able to play in Twenty20 as well. Over the past 12 months, he has played some very good limited-overs cricket.”England will name their one-day squad on Thursday, but one man who certainly won’t be there is Steven Finn despite his Man-of-the-Series performance against Bangladesh after taking 15 wickets in two matches. The selectors have decided he requires a conditioning programme like that undertaken by Stuart Broad and won’t be considered for any ODI action ahead of the Pakistan Test series at the end of July.Flower was also keen to temper expectations for 21-year-old Finn with comparisons already being made with Glenn McGrath and talk of a vital role he can play in the Ashes series later this year.”I don’t like to make those comparisons,” he said. “Steven Finn is unique in various ways. He is very much his own man. Comparing him to other fast bowlers, to me, is not useful. But he has a lovely action.””He has been very impressive. He’s played four Test matches now, and it’s fair to say he’s learning all the time,” Flower added. “He has very, very good control for a 21-year-old fast bowler. I think that comes from his action, and also a very sound and grounded personality. It is a great start for him, but he also realises that he has great scope for learning and progress.”The position likely to create most debate for the one-dayers is that of wicketkeeper following Craig Kieswetter’s impressive performances in West Indies which followed on from his maiden hundred against Bangladesh in Chittagong. Matt Prior hit 93 at Old Trafford, but his ODI average is a mediocre 25.38 having been shunted around the order during his career and it’s unlikely there will be room for both in the squad.”Michael Slater was an attacking and quick-scoring Test player but never really fitted the bill in limited-overs cricket,” Flower said. “Matt is an attacking, often counter-attacking, batsman in Test cricket. He has had a lot of opportunities up the order in one-day cricket and has not quite grasped them, and has consequently been playing a role in the middle order.”With Prior missing out on a hundred in Manchester it means his last three-figure score for England was in Trinidad last March. Since then he has admitted to putting in a huge amount of work on his keeping, but Flower said it was important he maintained his standards in both roles.”I don’t think it needs to be a balancing act between wicketkeeping focus or batting focus,” he said. “Everybody has the time and energy to do both. There is no scope for saying you are working hard on one and therefore the other suffers, at all.”Matt, in his career with England so far, has done some really good things – with the bat and gloves. There was evidence of that again in this last Test match. He had a really good and important partnership with Ian Bell.”
