Allan Saint-Maximin showed exactly what he has to offer Newcastle against West Ham on Saturday, though there is a sense that there is still work for him to do to become an all-round effective star.

It is fair to say that the Newcastle front-three have taken their time to gel this season. They still only have one league goal between them but there is a growing sense that they are starting to come together to produce match-winning moments for their team.

Having said that, all three of the Magpies’ goals on Saturday came as a result of set-pieces, though Saint-Maximin was guilty of missing two brilliant chances in the first half.

The winger has shown this term that his pace, like Miguel Almiron’s, will be an asset for his side this year, and if he can add the finishing touch then he will become a very effective outlet for Steve Bruce’s side.

In that sense it is a shame that he shares another trait with the Paraguay international – an inability to finish chances.

Played through in the first half by Jonjo Shelvey, he had all the time in the world to pick his spot, but Roberto matched his effort, and in a later chance he made the bewildering decision to pass across goal when he only had Felipe Anderson on the goal line to beat.

Despite that, it was an impressive showing from the 23-year-old, and if he produces such a display on a consistent basis then he will repay the £16.5m spent on him.

As per SofaScore, his dribbling is his best asset, and if given time and space on the flank he can be a thorn in the side of most teams.

He showed his ability to turn and run with the ball in a dangerous fashion for the goal against Manchester United a few weeks ago, so once he builds up an understanding with Joelinton and the midfield, he should start to produce in the final third.

Another aspect of his play which is likely to win over both fans and his manager is his tenacity, demonstrated by him winning seven out of the ten ground duels he faced against West Ham.

That is important to Bruce’s defensive style as it allows the Magpies to defend from the front, and if he can win the ball and attack the opposition then that could be a source of great strength for Newcastle.

The Frenchman seems to be getting better game by game and shows the confidence to take the game to the opponent in a direct style, and that means he could become very valuable as the season progresses, particularly if he improves his finishing.

– No ano passado, as demonstrações de amor incondicional e comprometimento da torcida do São Paulo foram fundamentais para o desempenho de nossa equipe. Mais importante que a renda de bilheteria é saber que nossa torcida continuará ao nosso lado nos duelos em casa, empurrando o time e repetindo espetáculos semelhantes aos do ano passado – indicou a nota oficial do clube.

Haroon Lorgat, chief executive of the ICC, is confident that security in Bangladesh is up to the task of policing the country’s remaining World Cup matches, despite the stoning of the West Indies team bus on Friday. “I am satisfied that the security is firm enough to withstand that sort of issue,” Lorgat said at a press conference in Chennai. “The police that were present there have made certain arrests.”Angry Bangladesh fans, whose team was bowled out for 58, the lowest total by a Full Member at a World Cup, threw stones at both team buses, cracking two of the West Indian team buses windows. None of the players were injured. Lorgat played down the incident, calling it “minor,” and explained why it was not as serious as had been originally reported. “It was a few individuals who threw pebbles at the bus, and they were pebbles.”Bangladesh has hosted three matches in the tournament so far, as well as the opening ceremony, and Friday was the first incident of any security breach. Bangladesh lost their tournament opener against India by 87 runs but there was no sign of aggression from the home fans after that. They had since leapfrogged the West Indies into eighth position on the ODI rankings, and the home crowd may have expected their team to beat the West Indies as proof of their loftier position. Lorgat thinks that may have caused the chaos. “It was, I guess, disappointed fans at the result of their home team being defeated so convincingly by the visitors.”England, who pulled out of a match in the 2003 World Cup against Zimbabwe because of security concerns, are the next team due to travel to Bangladesh. Netherlands and South Africa are also scheduled to play their group stages in Bangladesh and there were some rumours swirling that the teams may not want to go to the country and the matches would have to be moved. Lorgat stamped out any such possibility. “We have a very robust security plan in place and I am convinced that the tournament is going to continue as scheduled.”He did not rule out the possibility of moving games, but said that Friday’s incident was not enough to merit doing so. “We would not move a game lightly, but it is not something that we would discount. I don’t believe that particular incident justifies moving the game.” Bangladesh will host five more World Cup matches, including two quarter-finals.

O zagueiro David Braz completou na última quinta-feira, em Quilmes, na Argentina, 200 jogos com a camisa do Santos.
