The 18-year-old fast bowler took 4 for 44 in 15 overs as Derbyshire were bowled out for 207, despite half-centuries from Greg Smith and Robin Peterson, to trail on first innings by 72.Will Jefferson and Paul Nixon went cheaply when Leicestershire batted again but by the close they had moved to 83 for two, a lead of 155. Derbyshire went into the second day 239 runs adrift and had shaved just a single off their arrears before Buck struck with the fifth ball of the morning.Wayne Madsen edged the first ball he faced to second slip and Garry Park losthis off stump aiming a lavish drive at Buck. When Dan Redfern also drove carelessly at Matthew Hoggard and was caught behind, Derbyshire were in deep trouble at 73 for 5.Peterson is a useful batsman to have coming in at number seven with six first-class hundreds behind him, and he showed why Derbyshire believe he will make them a stronger team this season. The former South Africa Test all-rounder played a measured innings which featured some handsome straight drives, and with Smith also displaying sound judgement, the sixth-wicket pair batted into the afternoon session before they were parted.Smith hit eight fours in his second fifty of the season and Peterson’s maiden half-century for Derbyshire included six boundaries, but Claude Henderson snared them both in consecutive overs. He had Peterson caught behind for 54 to end a stand of 94 in 31 overs, and then Smith went for the same score, caught at short leg off bat and pad.Henderson has started the season well, taking six wickets in the first innings of the previous game against Northants, and he had another victim when Tim Groenewald missed a big mow across the line and was lbw. Buck had plucked out Lee Goddard’s off stump with a rapid ball in the previous over but Leicestershire were frustrated by a last-wicket stand between Steffan Jones and Mark Footitt. The pair added 33, helped by two poor pieces of fielding by Hoggard, who brought himself back into the attack to bowl Footitt with a full-length ball.Jones pegged the visitors back by trapping Jefferson lbw for six and Nixon played round a straight one from Groenewald, but Matthew Boyce and James Taylor batted out the day in bright sunshine to leave Leicestershire well placed with two days to go.

Having strengthened at the back with the signing of Kieran Trippier, followed by bringing in another striker in the shape of Chris Wood during the January transfer window, it seems as though Newcastle United are now keen on adding a midfielder to their ranks before the end of the month.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle and fellow Premier League side Watford are eyeing up a potential loan move for Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury before the current transfer window comes to a close.

As a product of Leicester’s youth system, the 24-year-old has made 79 senior appearances for the Foxes across all competitions, chipping in with two goals and two assists along the way.

However, with only seven appearances across all competitions so far this season prior to Leicester’s Premier League home clash against Brighton today, a potential loan move to Newcastle could be tempting for the former England under-21 international if he would be guaranteed regular playing time in Eddie Howe’s side.

The midfielder, who is currently earning £61k-per-week according to Salary Sport, has previously been praised by Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers for his “outstanding” performances for the Midlands club, possibly showing why the likes of Newcastle and Watford are interested in adding him to their squads this month.

Whenever the 24-year-old has featured for the Foxes, he has brought plenty of steel to their midfield, averaging 2.3 tackles and 2.3 interceptions per game. Both of those averages exceed anyone at Newcastle who plays in the same position, suggesting that he could be an upgrade on Howe’s current options in that regard.

Fans will be amazed

With the Tyneside club being linked with a move for Choudhury in the past before their current owners took over, the fans will surely be amazed to see that the Magpies are seemingly once again interested in bringing the Leicester ace to St James’ Park, especially given his impressive performances whenever he has played.

Moving forward, with Newcastle fighting to avoid relegation this term, it would be worth adding as many options as they can to improve their squad before the end of the month to help Eddie Howe in his endeavours, just as the owners have done with the acquisitions of Trippier and Wood.

In terms of Choudhury, despite predominantly playing in midfield, he has shown on occasion that he is capable of operating in defensive positions as well. That is the sort of versatility which could be useful for Newcastle throughout the remainder of the season, especially if they can make better use of him than Leicester seem to be doing in recent months.

The England and Wales Cricket Board has announced that its board has been expanded in size from twelve to fourteen members – and will for the first time include two women directors.The former England women’s captain Rachael Heyhoe-Flint has been appointed as the women’s game representative while Jane Stichbury, former Chief Constable of Dorset, will be an independent director.In addition, Yorkshire Chairman Colin Graves will join the board after his nomination was unopposed. He will fill a position which was made vacant by the retirement of the Surrey Chairman David Stewart.”I am delighted that Jane and Rachael have been nominated to serve on our Board,” said ECB Chairman Giles Clarke. “Rachael was an outstanding captain of England women and has worked tirelessly on behalf of cricket for many years – particularly for the Lady Taverners.”Jane was the first woman to be appointed as one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Constabulary and her knowledge and experience will be invaluable.”Heyhoe-Flint epitomised English women’s cricket during her playing career, and continued to promote the sport through her strong media presence and personality after her retirement. As per a report in The Mirror’s print edition (28.01.21, pg. 58, via The 72), some transfer news has come out of Southampton as the club could now make a last gasp bid to sign West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

Over this last week of the transfer window, the Saints have been tipped with late moves through reliable sources in the press as they aim to back manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano lifted the lid on Southampton’s willingness to table a £25 million bid to sign loanee Armando Broja on a permanent deal from Chelsea (Twitter).

Football.london correspondent Adam Newson also claimed that the south coast side, and by extension their transfer chief Martin Semmens, are attempting to sign another Blues sensation in midfielder Tino Anjorin (Twitter).

Now, with more news emerging on Southampton’s end-of-window transfer plans, The Mirror have an update involving England international Johnstone.

The Latest: Saints could make last gasp Johnstone bid…

As per their information, via The 72, Hasenhuttl’s side ‘could make a last minute move’ to sign the 28-year-old this month with his Baggies contract runs out at the end of 2021/2022.

West Brom are set to lose the shot-stopper as a free agent in the summer as things stand, with January coming as one last chance to potentially make a small profit off his sale.

The Championship side’s manager, Valerien Ismael, confirmed that he axed Johnstone from his last squad to face Preston North End – revealing it was due to a behind-the-scenes ‘issue’.

After this internal development, The Mirror claim Southampton, West Ham and Spurs have been put on alert and could bid before the deadline.

The Verdict: Get it done?

There is little denying Johnstone would be a stellar capture for Semmens considering his pedigree, age and the fact he is homegrown.

Hailed for his form in the Premier League with West Brom last season, this drew the attention of Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, who subsequently handed the player his first England call-up.

Wolverhampton Wanderers legend Steve Bull lauded Johnstone as a ‘world class goalkeeper’ when speaking to This is Futbol last year – coming as even more evidence he would be a fine capture at St. Mary’s Stadium.

At just 28, Johnstone would also provide Hasenhuttl a long-term solution to his goalkeeping conundrum with Willy Caballero, Frazer Forster and Alex McCarthy all set to leave as free agents in the summer as things stand.
