Sanath Jayasuriya returns to old haunt in middle order

Sanath Jayasuriya admitted it was a “big challenge” for him to return to his old position in the middle order

At 40, challenges still exist for Sanath Jayasuriya. The Sri Lankan team management, led by captain Kumar Sangakkara, has decided to push Jayasuriya down the order to make better use of the allrounder. Jayasuriya admitted it was a “big challenge” for him to return to the position where he had started his career.”Since 1995, I have opened unless I was coming back from an injury. So it is a big challenge, which for the last 15 years I haven’t faced,” Jayasuriya told Cricinfo on the eve of Sri Lanka’s first ODI in Rajkot. “But I have taken up the challenge and I will work hard to perform.”Jayasuriya was a regular middle-order batsman before being asked to open in the World Series Challenge in Australia in 1995 by the then captain Arjuna Ranatunga for the first time. Jayasuriya lapped up the new job with an intensity that would make him a household name in the years to come and completely redefine the role of an opener in the 50-over the game. But with age Jayasuriya’s reflexes have thinned down, resulting in the dip in his ODI form. To avoid the issue becoming a growing concern, the Sri Lankan think tank decided to push him down the order. The new job came with a disclaimer: there was no security.Interestingly, Jayasuriya’s previous performances in the role have been far from impressive: in 39 innings, he averages 13.13 with no fifties. He last batted in the middle order in 2005 against India, scoring an unbeaten 43 at No. 6 to help Sri Lanka chase 206.Despite the pressure building on him, Jayasuriya indicated he was not in a desperate situation. “Nobody is guaranteed a place if you don’t perform,” Jayasuriya said. “It doesn’t matter if you are an allrounder or an opener. So whenever I get an opportunity I have to perform.”Comparing the two roles, Jayasuriya said facing the new ball was a completely different equation as against negotiating the old ball in the middle-to-end overs. “It is unlike batting as an opener where you have the license to play your natural game and go after the bowling. The field is up and you are looking to get runs on the board so you are attacking from the very beginning,” he said. “In the middle order, you need to play according to the situation and occupy the crease for longer periods.”Despite the change in his job profile, Jayasuriya remains a dangerous proposition for the opposition, a fact the Indian captain MS Dhoni agreed with. “Whenever he has played a long innings, batting through the middle overs, he emphasises more on running between the wickets,” Dhoni pointed out.Dhoni said Jayasuriya is not as brutal while batting in the middle order, where the focus is to run hard and then go after the bowling at the end of the innings. According to Dhoni, the key to arrest Jaysuriya’s development was to restrict him from converting the singles into twos and threes.”He is a very good runner, (who) tries to put pressure on fielders,” Dhoni said. “The key is not to give him easy singles and doubles.”Sri Lanka have announced that Upul Tharanga will partner Tillakaratne Dilshan at the top.

Twenty20 a virus, says Miandad

The former Pakistan captain and coach has labelled the shortest format of the game “a virus” which could signal the death of Test cricket

“With the introduction of Twenty20 leagues, the notion that ‘country comes first’ is also hit for six.”•AFP

Former Pakistan captain and coach Javed Miandad has labelled the shortest format of the game “a virus” which could signal the death of Test cricket. Miandad believed that with Twenty20 leagues around the world offering vast amounts of money, international cricket – particularly the long form of the game – was becoming less attractive to the players, and he called for the ICC to step in.”Twenty20 cricket is a virus and if the ICC doesn’t restrict matches of this format it will finish Test cricket, as leading players will no longer want to play for their country,” Miandad told . “With the introduction of Twenty20 leagues, the notion that ‘country comes first’ is also hit for six because when there is a choice between national duty and more money, players will choose money. Some of the Australian players could have represented their country longer but retired to play Twenty20 leagues two years ago.”When Twenty20 cricket started, I had smelled this format will damage cricket. Now the game will not see quality players, as they are now more attuned to play the big-hitting game than the traditional and classical way.”Interestingly enough, Miandad’s comments came at a time when Pakistan players were ignored for the third season of the IPL with none of the franchises bidding for the available 11 players during the auction in Mumbai on Tuesday. The apparent reason was because the teams were not sure of their availability due to visa and other problems. However, Miandad said the players “should not be bothered” by the snub. “They must concentrate on their national duties as country always comes first.”He also expressed his concerns about India having a dominant say in world cricket affairs. “I fear a day will come when world cricket will be run by India alone,” Miandad said. “So I fear if Australia, England, Sri Lanka and the West Indies don’t realise this, world cricket will be at the mercy of India.”

Aston Villa: Cash let Gerrard down

Aston Villa failed to bounce back from their 3-1 defeat to Chelsea as they lost 2-1 to Brentford away from home in the Premier League on Sunday.

Danny Ings handed Villa the lead as he latched onto an excellent through ball from Emi Buendia before clinically dispatching his effort into the far corner.

Yoann Wissa levelled the scores before half-time with a brilliant curling effort from the edge of the box, bending his left-footed strike beyond Emi Martinez after taking the ball past Hause with a clever first touch.

Brentford then won the three points as Mads Roerslev snuck the ball into the back of the net after following up on a rebound from his own shot in the box.

Lightweight

One player who let Steven Gerrard down badly in the match was right-back Matty Cash as he struggled throughout the game at both ends of the pitch.

Defensively, he was a lightweight. As per SofaScore, the £24k-per-week defender did not win a single aerial battle and lost four of his seven ground battles. He failed to make a single tackle and was dribbled past once, although he did make three interceptions at right-back. Cash was not strong enough in his defending and his attacking play did not make up for this.

Offensively, he was lacklustre. Via SofaScore, he coughed up possession of the ball 17 times from 59 touches, which means that he gave it back to the opposition every 3.4 touches throughout the 90 minutes. He also failed to complete a single cross and was unsuccessful in both of his attempted dribbles.

This shows that he lacked quality on the ball and was unable to show his class in possession as Brentford were able to stifle him all too easily. It was, perhaps, summed up best as he took too long to get the ball out of his feet in added time on the right wing and ended up being tackled, with the referee then blowing the full-time whistle.

Therefore, he let the manager down as he put in a subpar performance both in attack and in defence. Although the result could not be entirely placed on his shoulders, his individual display did not help the side’s chances of winning and he will surely be hoping for an improvement from a personal point of view in the coming matches.

Newcastle: Rob Holding a potential target

Arsenal’s Rob Holding will be on Newcastle’s January centre-back shortlist, journalist Pete O’Rourke has told Give Me Sport.

The lowdown

A recent report from The Daily Mail suggested that the Magpies want to sign two centre-backs this month, while The Athletic’s Chris Waugh said over the weekend that the club were hopeful of adding both Lille’s Sven Botman and Seville’s Diego Carlos to their ranks.

Newcastle have the joint-worst defensive record in the Premier League for goals conceded and the outright worst for expected goals against.

A potential alternative to the aforementioned duo, especially with Botman seemingly now unattainable, Holding has two-and-a-half years remaining on his Arsenal contract and is valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt.

The latest

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke is certain that the Gunners defender is one of the names under consideration at St James’ Park.

He stated: “Rob Holding at Arsenal. I’m sure he’s on Newcastle’s list.”

The verdict

Holding has found Premier League minutes hard to come by this season as he battles with the likes of Gabriel and Ben White. He has only started three times in the top flight in 2021/22, with most of his game-time coming in the domestic cups.

He may duly be open to leaving the Emirates Stadium and, intriguingly, data from FBRef shows he’s stylistically similar to Botman, with a high volume of progressive passes and blocks.

He also earned praise last month for reporting alleged racist abuse of some Arsenal team-mates during one Premier League match, with a statement from the anti-racism group Kick It Out saying that “his actions are a great example of taking a stand and being an ally to his team-mates” (The Mirror).

Is he actually good enough to address Newcastle’s defensive woes, though?

If scouts were watching him on Sunday, they may be far from convinced. Holding produced what Football FanCast editor Matt Dawson called a ‘royal stinker’ as Arsenal were shocked by Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup, while he ranks a lowly 18th in WhoScored’s performance rankings among Mikel Arteta’s squad this season.

Ultimately, Newcastle can’t afford to take any chances on these crucial signings, especially with their Premier League status on the line beyond the midway point of the season.

Quetta prevail in low-scoring thriller

A round-up of matches from the first day of the RBS one-day competition

Cricinfo staff11-Feb-2010Group A
Kashif Naved’s unbeaten 78, combined with steady contributions from the rest of Multan Tigers’ top and middle order, led them to a five-wicket victory with three overs to spare against Hyderabad Hawks at Niaz Stadium. Rizwan Haider struck 45 off 35 balls to provide the finishing touches to a confident chase of 256. Earlier, Aqeel Anjum anchored the Hyderabad innings with a steady 81 but they lost regular wickets to slump to 115 for 4. A couple of quick fire 20s from Mir Ali and Kashif Bhatti, at a strike-rate of over 200, raised the tempo towards the end.Quetta Bears’ bowlers did a magnificent job of defending a small total and secured a four-run win against Peshawar Panthers in Karachi. Khalil Ahmed was the star, scalping 4 for 34, but he was well supported by his team-mates, who struck regular blows while keeping the run-rate in check, and they succeeded in bowling Peshawar out for only 149 in 44.2 overs. The finish was tense because Hamad-ul-Hasan remained firm and steered Peshawar from 124 for 9 towards the target, before losing last man Bilal Khan in a run out. Earlier, Peshawar’s bowlers had also wrecked the Quetta innings, with Riaz Afridi (4 for 29) and Jibran Khan (3 for 35) doing most of the damage. Quetta were reduced to 1 for 3 and 19 for 4 before Taimur Khan’s unbeaten 55 in the middle order dragged them to 153.Group B
Younis Khan found form in Habib Bank’s first match of the RBS Cup against Sui Southern Gas Corporation, scoring an unbeaten 81 to lead his team to a seven-wicket victory in Lahore. Chasing SSGC’s 265, Younis had support from Saleem Elahi, who scored 67, after which he had an unbroken 150-run partnership with Hasan Raza, who contributed 76 off only 64 balls to finish the chase as early as the 44th over. There were three half-centurions in SSGC’s innings as well: the Pakistan Under-19 captain Azeem Ghumman top-scored with 66, while Wajid Ali and Rizwan Ahmed made 57 and 53. Sarmad Anwar took 3 for 60 for Habib Bank. The match between Khan Research Laboratories and National Bank of Pakistan was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of rain in Rawalpindi.Lahore Eagles’ fast bowlers ran through the Karachi Zebras batsmen in Lahore, setting up a 69-run win for their team. Mohammad Irshad claimed 4 for 39, while Emmad Ali and Mohammad Saeed took 2 for 48 and 3 for 28, to bowl out Karachi for 163 in the 38th over. Akbar Rehman top-scored for Karachi with 61 but had little support from the others. Lahore, too, had no major contributions from any of their batsmen but they scraped together 232 before being dismissed in the 49th over. Akbar Rehman impressed with the ball too for Karachi, taking 3 for 42, while Usama Basharat picked up 3 for 36.Group C
A solid batting performance from the Abbottabad Rhinos laid the foundation for their 88-run victory over Faisalabad Wolves at the Iqbal Stadium. Nine Abbottabad batsmen got into double figures with opener Mir Azam Khan setting the pace with an aggressive 61 off 38 balls. Captain Adnan Raees provided stability with a composed 52 off 89 balls, allowing his partners to bat with freedom. Fawad Khan also struck a quick half-century to lead Abbottabad to 314 for 8 in 50 overs. Farrukh Shahzad and Mohammad Salman made 60s during the chase and Faisalabad were well-placed at 166 for 2 at one stage. However, there were no more substantial contributions from the rest of the batsmen and they were eventually dismissed for 226 in the 47th over. Khalid Usman was the pick of Abbottabad’s bowlers with 3 for 32 off ten overs.Rawalpindi Rams prevailed in a rain-curtailed match against Islamabad Leopards, winning the 20-over contest at the Diamond Club Ground with five wickets in hand and nine balls to spare. Islamabad got off to a poor start after they were sent in, losing one opener with the score on 2 and the other on 6. Ali Sarfraz, the No. 3 batsman, scored 45 off 31 balls and the innings received another useful contribution from Zohaib Ahmed, who made 33. Chasing a target of 149, Rawalpindi slumped to 43 for 5 – Shahzad Azam took 3 for 17 – before Adnan Mufti scored 47 off 34 balls and Usman Saeed 46 off 34 to repair the innings and set up the win.Four half-centuries – two steady, two rapid – led Sialkot Stallions to 310 for 6 against Lahore Lions, a total which their bowlers defended with ease at the Jinnah Stadium. Majid Jahangir made 58 off 79 and Mohammad Ayub 64 off 80 and their innings laid the base for Shahzad and Adeel Malik. Shahzad clubbed 80 off 66 and Adeel 70 off 49, lifting the pace towards the end of the innings. During the chase, opener Sohail Ahmed scored 81 to lead Lahore to a position of strength – 123 for 1 – before the middle order crumbled. They lost five wickets for 26 runs and were eventually dismissed for 231 in the 49th over.Group D
Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited needed only 30 overs to chase down the target of 179 set by Pakistan Customs, and did so with six wickets in hand in Lahore. Pakistan Customs had made a sound start – their openers added 55 – before they were jolted when three wickets fell for the addition of one run. A 25-run stand followed for the fourth wicket before three more wickets fell in a hurry once again, this time for the addition of two runs. Aamer Yamin scored 43 to steer Pakistan Customs from 83 for 6 to 178 before the last wicket fell in the 45th over. Fifteen-year old Babar Azam led ZTBL’s chase, scoring 68 off 78 balls to ensure victory.Shoaib Malik’s run-a-ball 102 led Pakistan International Airlines to a match-winning total against Water and Power Development Authority in Bahawalpur. His innings, which contained eight fours and three sixes, along with half-centuries from Sarfraz Ahmed and Faisal Iqbal helped PIA post a challenging score of 318 for 5. WAPDA gave spirited chase, despite losing Jahangir Mirza for a first-ball duck, with Rafatullah Mohmand and Imranullah Aslam scoring 77 and 76. They added 151 for the second wicket but the innings lost direction after both fell in quick succession. No one in the middle and lower order weighed in and WAPDA were eventually dismissed for 287 with 17 balls to spare.
