India look to salvage pride

Back in 2007, Zaheer Khan and Murali Kartik pulled off a late show to give the scoreline (4-2) a slightly more respectable look, and that’s as much as India can aspire to at the DY Patil Stadium

For India, it’s a bleak and depressing one. Three successive losses have cost them the series against a patchwork-quilt Australian side. Despite an appalling injury list, Australia have managed to hold their nerve at key moments. India have lapsed back into 1990s mode, with stellar individual performances like Sachin Tendulkar’s 175 in Hyderabad expected to paper over collective weakness. That hasn’t happened, and the pre-series hype of going for the No.1 ranking now sounds pathetic. For the second series in a row at home, they head to Mumbai, the heartland of Indian cricket, with the cause hopelessly lost. Back in 2007, Zaheer Khan and Murali Kartik pulled off a late show to give the scoreline (4-2) a slightly more respectable look, and that’s as much as India can aspire to at the DY Patil Stadium. As for Australia, having won the Champions Trophy and now swatting aside the challenge of one of their big rivals away from home, this is a happy time, an occasion to revel in the success of a system that can produce stand-ins like Doug Bollinger and Clint McKay. Even with half the first team back home nursing injuries and niggles, they’ve been far too good.Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first)

India – LLLWW
Watch out for…Sachin Tendulkar: That dazzling century at Hyderabad aside, he has contributed just 100 in five innings. This, though, is a special game, the first time he’ll be playing in front of his home crowd since the terror attacks in Mumbai a year ago. Some of his greatest innings against Australia have come in Mumbai (twin fifties in the Test in 2001, and 90 in the World Cup of 1996), but they never resulted in Indian wins. He’ll be desperate to change that.Doug Bollinger: A generation ago, Brett Schultz’s left-arm pace caused India immense discomfiture on a tour of South Africa. Bollinger, who’s as quick and more accurate, has had a similar impact since his introduction into this series, taking nine wickets at 19.33. The caught-and-bowled dismissal of Tendulkar was the big moment in the six-wicket romp in Guwahati, and there should certainly be enough bounce at the Navi Mumbai venue to keep him interested.Team newsIndia have to make a choice. Do they opt to give the fringe players a chance, or do they focus on the victory that would claw back some pride? Had the series been won rather than lost, Sudeep Tyagi and Amit Mishra would certainly have been given outings. Mishra could yet play in place of Ravindra Jadeja, but Virat Kohli is unlikely to get a game, given how the frontline batsmen have struggled at times. Ishant Sharma could make a return with the Test series against Sri Lanka now just four days away.India: (probable) 1 Sachin Tendulkar, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 7 Harbhajan Singh, 8 Praveen Kumar, 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Ashish Nehra. With Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson flying home on Tuesday night to get some rest ahead of the upcoming home season, Australia are certain to give one-day debuts to Andrew McDonald and Burt Cockley. There could also be an opportunity for Jon Holland, the left-arm spinner who has watched from the sidelines, while Nathan Hauritz has been the most economical bowler in the series.Australia: (probable) 1 Shaun Marsh, 2 Adam Voges, Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Cameron White, 5 Michael Hussey, 6 Andrew McDonald, 7 Graham Manou (wk), 8 Clint McKay, 9 Jon Holland, 10 Doug Bollinger, 11 Burt Cockley.Pitch and conditionsThe DY Patil Stadium can seat 55,000 and has one of the best facilities in the country. Even the square was prepared with the help of 200 tonnes of soil flown in from South Africa. There should be enough pace and bounce to keep the quick bowlers interested, though no one can be certain how it will play given that it’s the first international match at the venue. During the IPL final in 2008, the slow bowlers had some joy, and the batsmen also enjoyed an outfield where the ball raced to the ropes.Rain is forecast for tomorrow and the overcast conditions should further encourage the seamers. India’s practice session on the eve of the game was cancelled due to persistent showers.Stats and triviaAustralia have won two of the three one-day matches they’ve played in Mumbai. The loss came in the dead rubber in 2007. Michael Hussey averages 104.33 in the series and is the only batsman on either side with more than 300 runs. The top six for Australia have averaged 42.96 in the series so far, as opposed to India’s 34.70Quotes”Even though the series is won, it’s not as if we’re going to leave everyone out now and not worry too much about the last game. We feel we’ve started something here with this group, not only here but since the one day series in England, we’ve started to get a really good feeling around the group and I don’t want to abandon that or let that go. It’d be nice to finish off on a winning note.”
“We haven’t backed the opportunities that we have got. A majority of the batsmen haven’t contributed at the same time.”

Rangers: GVB decision could save millions

Gio van Bronckhorst has had a near-on perfect start to life at Ibrox with four wins out of four since his arrival at Rangers.

The Gers have beaten Sparta Prague, Livingston, Hibernian and Dundee FC in his four matches, scoring nine goals and conceding once in that time.

One player who has stepped up and quickly asserted himself as a key player for the Dutchman is ex-Leicester defender Calvin Bassey.

Save millions

Towards the end of last month, FFC published an article outlining his impressive start under the former Feyenoord boss as a central defender, having been mainly used at left-back previously.

Since publication, he has started both of Rangers’ Premiership games as a centre-back and helped the side to keep back-to-back clean sheets against Hibernian and Dundee. This impressive form could now end up saving van Bronckhorst millions ahead of the January transfer window.

Connor Goldson is out of contract at the end of the season and it remains to be seen whether or not the club will opt to cash in on him in the winter window to avoid losing him for nothing. If they do decide to sell him then they will need a replacement to come in and Bassey’s recent form suggests that he could be that player.

Van Bronckhorst recently lauded the defender’s performances and claimed that he is ‘full of energy’. He said:

“I’ve been really impressed with Calvin [Bassey] as he does not have a lot of experience in the central positions. He has a lot of physical strength and we will help him to develop and grow. He is very open to learning and is full of energy.

“I think he has the physical ability to play there and we’re helping him a lot in that position when he has to pass when he has to dribble, the position he has to take when the other defenders got the ball.

“He’s a player who’s very open in learning and he gives a lot of energy into the team. The last two games I’m really happy with the way he played.”

At the age of 21, the £6.4k-per-week gem has plenty of time left ahead of him to develop further under van Bronckhorst’s coaching in Glasgow.

He could be tutored into becoming a top-quality centre-back for Rangers, with three clean sheets in the last four games and a SofaScore rating of 7.00 or higher in every match. This shows that he has the potential to be a solid operator at centre-back moving forward for the Gers and could alleviate the need for a new signing.

If he can continue to match the high standards he has set himself in recent weeks heading into January then it could tempt the 43-year-old boss and Ross Wilson to abort any plans they have to sign a Goldson replacement. Instead, they could use the money to strengthen other areas and have Bassey competing alongside the likes of Jack Simpson and Leon Balogun for a starting berth, with Filip Helander in the mix when he returns from injury.

Mohammed's five derails South Africa

A career-best bowling performance by the offspinner Anisa Mohammed helped West Indies women take the Twenty20 series in amazing fashion in Cape Town

Cricinfo staff26-Oct-2009
ScorecardA career-best bowling performance by the offspinner Anisa Mohammed helped West Indies women take the Twenty20 series in amazing fashion in Cape Town. South Africa did well to set themselves a target of 115 but stumped spectacularly with the bat after their openers got them off to a solid, if slow, start. From 73 for 0 in the 12th over, South Africa folded for 101 in 19.2 overs, with Mohammed leading the rout with 5 for 10.Shandre Fritz and Trisha Chetty applied themselves slowly at the start of the South Africa innings. They added 31 in the Powerplay, hitting just one four, but opened up in the eighth over. A six by Fritz raised the team 50 in 51 balls, but her exit for a 35-ball 42 in the 12th over, slicing a catch to over, opened the sluice gates. Mohammed came on for the next over and immediately got Chetty (31 from 39) chipping to mid-off. In her second over, the 15th of the innings, she dismissed Mignon du Preez and Kirstie Thomson off successive deliveries to leave South Africa on 84 for 4.After 15 overs, South Africa needed 30 more to win. Shemaine Campbelle, the right-arm seamer, added a second, getting Alicia Smith to flay her first delivery down to third man, and in the 18th over the hosts lost two more wickets. A terrible mix-up after the captain Sunette Loubser worked the ball to long leg and misjudged a single with Marizanne Kapp was followed by Charlize van der Westhuizen spooning one to extra cover.Mohammed came back to bowl her final over, the 19th, and nipped out two more to complete a superb outing. The final wicket came in the last over when Ashlyn Kilowan was run out.South Africa wouldn’t have anticipated such a dramatic collapse after excelling in the field. Smith and Kilowan led the bowling honours with two apiece while van der Westhuizen took 1 for 12 off her allotted overs. Cordel Jack’s 41 from 43 deliveries – she was particularly impressive driving straight and cutting square on the off side – was the best score of the West Indies innings and how crucial it proved to be.Loubser was disappointed at the loss but was happy with her bowlers’ performance.”There were a lot of positives to take out from this game even though the result didn’t go our way. The bowlers stuck to the lines and lengths that we discussed and we had an improved performance in the field as well,” Loubser said. “Going into the final T20, we need to still play our game and end the series on a high.”

No decision on Younis' replacement – Qasim

The Pakistan Cricket Board is expected to name a replacement for Younis Khan on the Test tour of New Zealand next week

Cricinfo staff17-Nov-2009The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to name a replacement for Younis Khan on the Test tour of New Zealand next week. Media reports have suggested the PCB has already selected Misbah-ul-Haq, who stand-in captain Mohammad Yousuf called for, but the board has denied any such decision.Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, is away in London and will return to Pakistan on 21. “Once the chairman returns home we will discuss the matter with him before deciding on naming a replacement for Younis,” Iqbal Qasim, the chief selector, was quoted as saying by .Qasim also said that Yousuf had not approached the PCB about a possible replacement for Younis.Younis walked away from the captaincy recently, wanting to take a rest and skip the New Zealand series after saying he had “lost command” over his team. In his place Yousuf was named as captain for the three-Test series, which begins November 24.

Newcastle: Botman top of transfer list

A major claim has emerged on Lille centre-back Sven Botman, regarding Newcastle United’s interest in his services…

What’s the talk?

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Magpies are ‘seriously interested’ in the defender and that he is at the top of their wishlist heading into January. Italian giants AC Milan are also said to be keen on the Dutchman, who had three other sides in talks to sign him in the summer.

He Tweeted: “Newcastle are seriously interested in signing Sven Botman in January. He’s top of the list – but still waiting to know Lille position/price tag. AC Milan are keeping tabs on Botman situation too #NUFC #Lille Sevilla, Wolves & Atalanta were in talks to sign Botman last summer.”

Delight

This major claim from Romano, that Botman is top of the club’s wishlist, will surely leave Newcastle fans feeling delighted. It shows that the ex-Ajax man is a serious target for the Magpies and indicates that he could be a player they are willing to actively pursue upon the opening of the transfer window next month.

Eddie Howe’s team are currently 19th in the Premier League table and staring down the barrel of relegation as it stands. They have only kept one clean sheet all season and lost 4-0 to Leicester at the weekend, highlighting the defensive frailties that have been causing them issues all year and showing why fans will be buzzing that PIF are working hard to bolster the ex-Bournemouth man’s options in that department.

The 21-year-old colossus has been in fine form for Lille and could be a top addition to Newcastle’s squad. He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.96 this season, impressing on Sunday with a score of 7.3 against Lyon in Ligue 1 for his side. He made five clearances, one block, two tackles and two interceptions to help his team keep a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw.

Last term, he averaged a score of 7.08 as Lille kept 20 clean sheets in his 37 appearances. This, along with his form this season, shows that he has the ability to perform to a high standard in a defence capable of keeping clean sheets at the top level, which is another reason why Newcastle fans will be delighted with the news of the club’s interest in signing him.

Will Man United sign Frenkie de Jong?

Ralf Rangnick may only ever have one transfer window as manager of Manchester United so he needs to make the most of it before taking up a role behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

United have never been afraid of spending big but as we’ve seen, money isn’t always the answer to a problem.

The Red Devils look like an outside bet to secure Champions League football next season but a few fresh faces in January could be just the ticket for their interim German manager.

One area that will have to be addressed is in the middle of the park where Paul Pogba’s future is, as always, very much up for debate.

Fred has hardly set the world alight since moving to English shores but under Rangnick, there is a realisation that he could become a key cog in the engine room due to his ability to relentlessly press and hassle opponents.

His aggressive and frantic nature could be the perfect tonic to a certain Frenkie de Jong.

The Dutchman has been continuously linked with a move to Man United in recent weeks and although talks haven’t taken place yet, it would be wise for Rangnick to lure him to the northwest of England this winter.

He is blessed with technical elegance and poise and is capable of thriving in a number of different disciplines, no matter whether it’s in the final third or defensively.

The Netherlands international is exceptional at retaining possession which can be seen by a mightily impressive pass success rate of 91.1% which is higher than any regular starter at United.

What also stands out is his elite ball carrying, something typified by his numbers for Barcelona.

In La Liga, the £81m-rated maestro has amassed 2.2 dribbles a match this term which is more than anybody at Old Trafford, including Pogba.

Not only is he calm and wonderfully gifted but he possesses an abundance of talents that could help him fit in right from the get-go in English football.

After all, this is a player tipped for some incredible things in his career.

Speaking about the Dutchman, Chief football writer at De Telegraaf, Valentijn Driessen said:

“He really does have some touches of Johan Cruyff. That acceleration, that hair, that forward thinking. He is not a second Cruyff, but he really does have the essence of Cruyff. He is our big hope in dark days.”

More eye-catching praise came from ex-Ajax man Arie Haand who added: “Now, you might laugh, but he is a better version of Franz Beckenbauer. People must interpret that properly. What I really mean is that he also has speed and passes easily. That’s an enormous weapon.”

That is an incredibly bold statement to make but it suggests why United must do plenty to seal his signature when the market opens next month.

AND in other news, Rangnick must seal MUFC swoop for “outstanding” £113m gem who drives Roy Keane “crazy”…
