The other group comprises the Australian title-holders New South Wales, South Africa’s Eagles and the yet-to-be-decided winner of England’s Twenty20 Cup.The top two teams will qualify for the second round where two groups of four each will compete in a round-robin league. Newcastle boss Howe could win over the fans at St James’ Park, if he hasn’t already when January comes around, by axing Isaac Hayden from the team in order to sign Lerma from Bournemouth.

The £41k-per-week Hayden has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.64 in the Premier League this season and won 51% of his duels overall. He has been dribbled past 1.4 times per game, highlighting a key issue with the former Arsenal man as he allows players to beat him far too easily in matches.

Lerma did not have this problem in his most recent season in the Premier League under Howe – in the 2019/20 campaign, he was dribbled past 0.8 times per game. He also averaged a rating of 6.82 as he won 55% of his duels and made 3.3 tackles and interceptions per game.

Former Cherries boss Jonathan Woodgate was effusive in his praise of the midfield destroyer, previously saying: “I don’t judge Jeff on goals. You know how I feel about Jeff. I’m his biggest fan. I think he’s unbelievable. If I can describe a six to anyone, he’s my favourite. He’s a six and he’s magnificent.

“He gives you absolutely everything every single game. Heads it, runs, tackles, passes. He’s a special player for me.

“He’s vital. You see what happened against Southampton (without him). Put Jeff in that team, it’s a different team.”

The 27-year-old has also displayed the attacking side to his game, creating 0.9 chances per match in the Championship this term, having managed 0.8 last season. Hayden, on the other hand, has created just 0.2 per game in the current campaign after managing 0.3 in the 2020/21 season, suggesting that Lerma could be an upgrade on him at both ends of the pitch.

Therefore, Howe could win the fans over by signing Lerma and improving the midfield by adding a combative, quality option to run the middle of the park alongside the likes of Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and Miguel Almiron from January onwards.

وتابع: “كان هناك عرضًا من نادي ضمك في الدوري السعودي، ولكن بالدي فضّل الانتقال إلى الأهلي، نظرًا لشعبيته الجارفة في القارة الإفريقية والعالم”، وهو ما يظهر في الصورة المرفقة.

وأضاف: “كانت هناك عروض أوروبية أخرى، ولكن لا ترتقي للجدية”.

وعن مدة التعاقد مع الأهلي: “سيوقع كيتا بالدي مع الأهلي لمدة موسمين مقبلين، لينتهي عقده في 30 يونيو 2024”.

Newcastle go in search of their first Premier League win of the season as they host Brentford at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Eddie Howe will be in the dugout for the first time since being named as the permanent successor to Steve Bruce and he will be looking for a reaction from the players on the pitch.

The Magpies were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton last time out in the top flight, with Graeme Jones in charge that evening, and the former Bournemouth boss could look to stamp his personality on the side following that result.

How many changes will Howe make to the team? Here is our predicted XI…

We are predicting that he will make three alternations to the team which started at Brighton, with Jamal Lewis, Fabian Schar and Joe Willock all coming in today.

Along with the change in personnel, Howe could deploy a 4-3-3 formation. Jones lined up with a 5-4-1 against Brighton and looked to set up defensively. However, the ex-Cherries boss may want his side to be on the front foot and trying to attack the opposition, which is why 4-3-3 could be implemented from the start.

With this formation, a change in defence will be required. We published an article explaining why Fabian Schar must be unleashed against the Bees and this means that two of the centre-backs who started against Brighton need to be dropped – Ciaran Clark and Emil Krafth, neither of whom has been especially convincing of late. This leaves Schar and captain Jamaal Lascelles as the two centre-backs to start Howe’s reign at St James’ Park.

At left-back, Jamal Lewis could come in for his first start of the season in place of Matt Ritchie. The Scottish defender played under Howe at Bournemouth but he has been in patchy form of late – with SofaScore ratings of 6.4 and 6.3 against Tottenham and Chelsea respectively – and it could be time for Lewis to get a chance to shine.

The former Norwich man has only made one appearance in the league this season, which came off the bench, and Howe’s arrival has provided a clean slate for him. He could be given an opportunity to come in and show that he can perform to a higher level than Ritchie of late, with the £44k-per-week dud set to be axed from the starting XI.

Finally, Joe Willock could return to bolster the midfield, coming in to replace Krafth and facilitate the change in formation. The ex-Arsenal man scored eight Premier League goals during his loan spell on Tyneside in the second half of last season and could provide a goalscoring threat from midfield to improve Newcastle’s chances of finding the net, which is why he could be selected in the team today.

Andrew Strauss’s captaincy has been criticised during the series for being defensive and too slow to make changes. He couldn’t be accused of that today. After the lunch/rain break he could have played safe and kept on Graeme Swann, who created danger before the interval with his offspin. Strauss preferred Stuart Broad and was rewarded with five wickets in 47 deliveries from the allrounder. Later in the session Strauss replaced James Anderson with Swann and watched him take two wickets in five balls – and four for the innings – as the tourists fell over for 160.Ponting fails
The most crucial wicket was that of Ricky Ponting, a batsman who is usually at his best in the biggest contests. He never looked right today and was edgy and jerky in his movements. Broad sent a ball angling in, Ponting shifted back to play it, but it ran into his angled bat and on to the stumps. While Anderson was given straight away, Shane Watson survived three huge appeals before England finally won an lbw decision against him. It was Australia’s turn to feel aggrieved a few wickets later with Marcus North’s lbw and Stuart Clark’s caught. North was playing forward to Swann when he got an inside edge that wasn’t spotted by Rauf. North was decent enough to smile, both at the appeal and the decision, rather than swear. Clark wasn’t as good humoured, walking off with a lot of muttering in Rauf’s direction after he was hit on the pad flap and taken at short leg. Cook, the catcher, was probably closer to the ball when it hit the batsman than the bat.
