Haggerty: Juranovic comes to Celtic with decent pedigree

The Celtic Way journalist Tony Haggerty believes that new signing Josip Juranovic comes into Celtic with decent pedigree.

The 26-year-old joined Celtic from Legia Warsaw last month and after receiving international clearance, he signed a five-year deal at Paradise.

The Croatia international featured twice for his national team at Euro 2020 against both Scotland and Spain. Juranovic operates as a right-back but has also pushed further forward into a right-midfield position, as well as featuring as a centre-back and left-midfielder on occasion.

Juranovic has already featured nine times for Legia Warsaw in all competitions this season, scoring one goal and providing two assists, and Haggerty believes that he comes to Celtic with a decent pedigree.

“He’s come in with, as you say, a decent pedigree and you know, the right back position for Celtic has been a problematic position for a long, long time. So, Ange and the management team have identified somebody who they believe can fill that space,” Haggerty told Football FanCast.

Juranovic was the eighth summer signing at Celtic Park after Osaze Urhoghide, Liel Abada, Liam Shaw, James McCarthy, Joe Hart, Kyogo Furuhashi, Carl Starfelt, before the Hoops completed their summer business by bringing in Liam Scales, Giorgos Giakoumakis, Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Chambers extends Essex deal

Maurice Chambers, the Essex fast bowler, has extended his contract with the club by two seasons

Cricinfo staff04-Nov-2008Maurice Chambers, the Essex fast bowler, has extended his contract with the club by two seasons.”It’s nice to have secured my future with Essex,” Chambers said. “Last season was my best so far since graduating from the academy. I played in most of the Twenty20 games and a couple of Championship matches so it was a good season.”Chambers, 21, impressed many with his raw pace in 2008, featuring in 11 of Essex’s 12 matches in their run-up to the Twenty20 Cup Finals Day, picking up 10 wickets at 22.10. And he has recovered sufficiently from his recent ankle surgery to attend an ECB fast-bowling training camp in Loughborough later this month, and in Florida on December 21.”All being well I might start walking through my run-up at Loughborough before going to Florida, which is going to be mainly fitness-based. I’m looking forward to it but it’s going to be a lot of hard work. The ECB have shown a lot of faith in me to keep me involved in these groups and I hope to continue to progress next season by playing more first-team games for Essex.”

Ajinkya Rahane, the Mumbai batsman, has set his sights on winning an India cap after his career-best 201 helped his side crush Orissa by 315 runs to earn a place in the quarter-finals of the Ranji Trophy’s Super League.Rahane, 20, has been in terrific form this season, leading the run charts with 762 from six matches. He said Sunday’s double-century, which completed Mumbai’s recovery after they folded for 180 in the first innings, was the best knock of his career. “My plan was to keep it simple and play my natural game on the merit of the ball and not go for rash shots,” he told . “I learnt from my mistakes in the first innings and didn’t want to repeat them. My aim was just to stand there and give Mumbai the upper hand.”He said his job was not finished yet. “We have just played the league and qualified for the quarterfinals and it will be important to score in the knockout stages,” he said. “My aim is to play for India. I am going on the right track but my priority is to score runs in crucial matches.”Rahane had a chance to impress the national selectors after being picked for India A against Australia A in September but failed to cash in on the opportunity. Mumbai coach Pravin Amre praised him for not letting his shoulders droop after that setback. “He worked on his mental aspect and the approach,” Amre said. “He is a talented player with the right technique and is good opening material for India.”Amre was also delighted with the performance of medium-pacer Dhawal Kulkarni, another member of that India A squad who has been on song this season. Kulkarni, playing his first season, was given the responsibility of leading a young bowling attack (combined experience of eight first-class matches, including two debutants) and responded with a five-wicket haul in the first innings. “After the experience he has gained from Australia, he has become a special bowler,” Amre told the . “Taking 32 wickets [from six matches] on flat pitches is an amazing feat.”

E o Jefferson buscava deixar a gente tranquilo.

Pundit can’t see where Jesse Lingard would’ve played at Leicester

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Premier League forward Dean Windass believes Brendan Rodgers would have found it hard to find a place for Jesse Lingard in Leicester City’s starting XI.

After an impressive loan spell with West Ham, where he scored nine goals in 16 appearances, Lingard reportedly caught the attention of Leicester.

Unsurprisingly, West Ham were also interested in signing the £75,000-a-week attacking midfielder, but in the end, he decided against pushing for a move and remained at Manchester United.

Had that not been the case, though, and Lingard did end up at Leicester, Windass thinks Rodgers would have had quite a dilemma.

“You’ve got Harvey Barnes on the left hand side who’s come back from injury, who’s an unbelievable young talent with pace to burn,” the ex-Hull City star said. “So where would you play Jesse Lingard if he had gone to Leicester?”

If James Maddison did depart to Arsenal, then perhaps there would have been room for another attacker like Lingard.

But with the likes of Maddison and Barnes, the above is certainly a good question to raise.

From Lingard’s perspective, though, he may need to leave for another club eventually, with game time at Old Trafford likely to be limited following the additions of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.

Man Utd made a mistake over Eric Bailly

Manchester United have arguably just completed their most successful transfer window in recent history, but it hasn’t always been this way.

The arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane have catapulted the Red Devils into contention for major trophies this season, something that previous signings were also expected to do.

One acquisition who has particularly disappointed is Eric Bailly. United’s previous manager Jose Mourinho brought the centre-back to Old Trafford in a £34.2m deal from Villarreal back in 2016 in an attempt to firm up his backline.

However, things have not worked out for the Ivory Coast international during his time in the red half of Manchester.

Persistent injury issues have limited Bailly to just 106 appearances for the Red Devils during his five-year stay with United, and he has failed to start more than 11 Premier League fixtures in a single season since his maiden campaign on English shores, when he made 24 starts.

The likes of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire have forced the now 27-year-old down the pecking order following the arrival of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and the addition of Varane has only seen him slip even further out of contention.

Although he has shown glimpses of his top-class quality when on top form, Bailly’s unreliability has been a constant factor of his time at United, and departing chief executive Ed Woodward may have regrets over sanctioning his purchase.

With a current market value of just £13.5m, any future sale to which the 20-time English champions agree will almost certainly see them make a considerable loss on the fragile defender.

Bailly’s time at United is likely to be remembered as one of what could have been had his body not let him down, which is a shame given the talent he clearly possesses when fit.

And, in other news…Sold for £20m, now worth £6.3m: Woodward delivered a Man Utd masterclass in 31 y/o dud
