Leeds’ move for Nahitan Nandez not close

Leeds United’s proposed move for Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez is still a long way from being completed, according to a fresh report.

The Lowdown: Leeds interested in Nandez move

The Whites could have a busy summer transfer window on their hands once Euro 2020 is over and players are focusing on their futures.

One player with whom Leeds have been constantly linked is Nandez, following an impressive season with Cagliari which saw him make 32 appearances in Serie A.

The Latest: Negative update emerges

It appears to be slow progress, however, with Centrotrentuno reporting [via Sport Witness] that a move is still a long way from being done.

Leeds’ interest in Nandez remains strong, but the ‘road would be long and not all downhill’ with regards to the Whites getting their man, who is also courted by Roma and Serie A champions Inter Milan.

The Verdict: Primary summer target

Leeds fans may have to be patient, but Nandez is a player who Marcelo Bielsa may feel is worth waiting for this summer, having been hailed as a ‘great player’ by his agent Pablo Bentancur.

Valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, the 25-year-old would bring undoubted pedigree in the middle of the park, having already won 39 caps for a Uruguay side which also features the likes of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani.

Averaging 1.8 successful tackles per Serie A game in 2020/21, he could be a strong partner for Kalvin Phillips in the middle of the park, making Leeds an even more daunting prospect ahead of next season.

In other news, Leeds are reportedly determined to sign one player this summer – find out who it is here.

Ganguly: Yuvraj and Murali Kartik will play

Zimbabwe captain Stuart Carlisle regretted the lack of support from all quarters despite his team faring so well as to lead India 2-1 in the five-match series, ahead of the fourth ODI to be held at Hyderabad on Saturday

Special Correspondent16-Mar-2002Zimbabwe captain Stuart Carlisle regretted the lack of support from all quarters despite his team faring so well as to lead India 2-1 in the five-match series, ahead of the fourth ODI to be held at Hyderabad on Saturday."Whenever we do well, it’s either the opposition missed Tendulkar or Anil Kumble. But we missed Andy Flower too. It’s not that we win because the opposition fared badly but because we performed better than the opposition on the day and we expect to be given some credit for our performance and not just blame the other team for our victory. Just the fact we won indicates we played better," he said.Carlisle said it was nice to be 2-1 up in the series and go into a match. "We would obviously like to win on Saturday, though, we would not talk about winning the series. But, if we win here, we win the series and we couldn’t ask for anything better because India are a tough team to beat," he added. The Zimbabwe skipper said Andy Flower looks fit but the physio will have the final word. But in the event the senior Flower were to play, "we would leave out a batsman."Queried about their none-too-impressive series in Sri Lanka, the captain said, "We did not play well. But, when a player like Muttiah Muralitharan takes 30 wickets in the series, then you are up against one individual who can beat you. But, we have improved ever since, worked hard on our game and fitness and the results are showing."Indian captain Saurav Ganguly, for his part, said vice-captain Rahul Dravid will keep wickets at Hyderabad. Ganguly said the top-order was tested but they failed to deliver at Kochi. "We have decided to make Dravid keep wickets in order to accommodate all-rounders who can bowl. Hence Yuvraj Singh and Murali Kartik will play the match on the morrow and Ajay Ratra will sit out," Ganguly said. Also sidelined will be Vijay Bharadwaj, who alongwith Tinu Yohannan will stay in the sidelines. The Indian skipper was not pleased with the fact the hosts trail 1-2 in the series. "The bowling has been pretty good so far, except for the last six overs in the first match at Faridabad, which we lost. We can’t afford to be lax here as this is a very important match for us and we need to win here to stay in the series. All the players need to put up a good display both here and at Guwahati to win the series," he added. When asked about India’s recent poor record after England levelled the series 3-3 and Zimbabwe beat them twice in three matches at home, Ganguly replied, "Yes, it is a worrying factor and it should be looked into. No team likes to lose that many matches. We are trying to overcome our shortcomings."On the other hand, coach John Wright was forthright in saying that India needed to perform better than at Kochi. "We played well in Faridabad until Marillier’s innings, which took the match away from us. We played badly at Kochi and we should try not to repeat it. Down 1-2 and two matches to go… it is not the right way to go into a series. However, sometimes this situation is good, since the players want to fight back," the Indian coach said.Wright added the team was working to overcome the inconsistency factor and are eager to perform better.

Celtic: Campbell reacts to Hoops’ Ryan link

Football Insider pundit Kevin Campbell has been having his say on Celtic and Arsenal’s interest in goalkeeper Mat Ryan.

The Lowdown: Celtic readying contract

Reports from Football Insider last week suggested that the Hoops are hoping to beat the Gunners in the race for the Brighton ‘keeper.

Ange Postecoglou’s appointment as Celtic boss provided a twist that could work in the Hoops’ favour, with the Scottish giants putting together a contract package.

The Seagulls are happy for Ryan to leave this summer, and Celtic have already picked out a specific shirt number – one.

The Latest: Campbell reacts

The 51-year-old, formerly of Arsenal, was asked if Ryan would be a welcome addition in Glasgow.

Campbell appeared desperate for his former side to win the race for the shot-stopper, who he described as ‘quality’.

“No, no, no, he’s coming to Arsenal.

“Of course, he would be a great signing for Celtic because he is a quality, reliable goalkeeper.

“I think Arsenal seriously need him and will go the extra mile to get him.

“They need to keep him because he has proven he can do the business. Beggars cannot be choosers at Arsenal, let me tell you.

“Arsenal have struggled in that department for some time. Ryan is a player that they have to get this summer.”

The Verdict: It could be a real coup

It seems as if Campbell would be upset if Celtic pipped Arsenal for Ryan’s services, so that just shows it could be a real coup for Postecoglou and the Hoops.

Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard all failed to make themselves first choice after receiving chances last season, so a new goalkeeper could be a priority for Postecoglou.

He knows Ryan well during his time as Australia manager, making the 29-year-old his number one at the 2014 World Cup and 2015 Asia Cup, so bringing him to Scotland could help the 55-year-old put together a solid defensive base with an experienced player he already trusts.

Bouquets for the BCCI

In addition, the BCCI also decided to appointzonal medical commissions who will report to a single medicalcommittee, which will then look into the physical fitness ofplayers coming back from injury

Partab Ramchand13-Mar-2002″Better late than never” may be an age-old cliché, but it is anadage that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) seemsto swear by. Traditionally, Indian cricket administrators havealways been slow to react to changing trends, and that is onereason why the game in this country is a step or two behind theinternational level. But if the decisions taken at the workingcommittee meeting of the Board in New Delhi last month are anyindication, the tradition-bound officials have at least woken upto the fact that a few important changes have to be put intoeffect for the betterment of the players and the game in thiscountry.

In addition, the BCCI also decided to appointzonal medical commissions who will report to a single medicalcommittee, which will then look into the physical fitness ofplayers coming back from injury. According to Dalmiya, playerscurrently returning from injury do furnish fitness certificatesfrom their own doctors.

Indian cricket, over the years, has had certain inherentweaknesses. The inability of the batsmen to face up to fastbowling, poor ground fielding and catching, the lack of pacebowlers, and physical fitness problems are some that come to mindimmediately. In the past two or three decades, there have beenimprovements in aspects such as facing up to fast bowling andgrooming pace bowlers. But sub-standard fielding and poorphysical fitness are problems that have defied solution tilldate. The appointment of a foreign coach, it was thought, would go along way in tackling these problems. But while John Wright hascontributed a good deal to various aspects concerning the Indianteam over the 15 months he has been associated with it as coach, fielding and physical fitness continue to be problem areas. Thenumber of players suffering from various injuries is evidenceenough that they are not able to measure up to the hecticinternational schedules that are part and parcel of the moderngame. Even the appointment of another foreigner in the team inphysiotherapist Andrew Leipus did not seem to help matters inthis regard. In fact, most of Leipus’ time was devoted totreating injuries rather than preventing them.Given this background, it is heartening to know that the BCCI, ina bid to improve the overall fitness of the players, has decidedto appoint a full-time physical trainer in South African AdrianLe Roux. In fact, the working committee, which took the decisionto go in for a fitness coach, did so after Leipus informed Boardmembers that the players were in need of a more systematictraining regimen. Board chief Jagmohan Dalmiya was apparentlyconvinced by Leipus’ argument. Indeed, the BCCI went one betterand decided to have separate physical trainers for all the RanjiTrophy teams, besides one specialist in the field at the NationalCricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore.Le Roux’s first assignment will be on the tour of the West Indiesnext month. The chief objective is for the team to achieve peakfitness levels in time for the 2003 World Cup in South Africa. Itis a laudable aim, and once the person is identified, it is hopedthat team members will respond positively. For there is no doubtthat, in today’s game, matches can be won and lost on thisimportant aspect alone. In addition, the BCCI also decided to appoint zonal medicalcommissions who will report to a single medical committee, whichwill then look into the physical fitness of players coming backfrom injury. According to Dalmiya, players currently returningfrom injury do furnish fitness certificates from their owndoctors. “But once they are on the field, we find they are stillnot fully fit and the selectors are blamed. We want to stopthis,” said Dalmiya. A step in the right direction, belatedlyperhaps, but at least that step has been taken. One more problematic area to which Board officials have woken upis the nature of pitches in this country. For years, it has beenacknowledged by everyone even remotely associated with Indiancricket that the chief reason for the team’s sub-standard showingabroad is the fact that the wickets are so very different fromthose prevalent at home. Playing on slow surfaces or spinoriented tracks is hardly any kind of preparation for performingon faster and bouncer wickets abroad. Little wonder then thatthere is so much disparity between the Indian team’s record athome and playing away. Finally coming to terms with this long-standing problem, the BCCIhas decided to select 10 centres to prepare fast and bouncytracks. The Board wishes to tackle the problem right down theline by going in for faster wickets even in domestic cricket.According to Dalmiya, harder pitches will be prepared from the2002-2003 domestic season. He was of course quick to add, “Don’texpect wickets like Perth in Australia, but these will definitelyhave more bounce. For a start, we have identified the wickets inthe 10 Test-playing centres.” He added that two pitches in eachof the five zones would be selected, and the services of expertsfrom foreign countries would be utilised.A couple of other decisions taken at the meeting are bound tohave far-reaching effects. For example, it was decided toimplement a rotation policy for international players to givethem the required rest before the World Cup. According to theBCCI chief, owing to the busy schedule of the Indian team beforenext year’s World Cup, the Board had decided to give some playersthe required rest at their own behest. He added that when he metsome senior players during the Bangalore Test against England inDecember, they said that they would like to have such a system. At least the views of the players are not only being sought butalso being put into effect, and that is surely an encouragingsign for Indian cricket.

Leeds United: Alan Hutton drops ecstatic Junior Firpo verdict

Alan Hutton believes that Barcelona defender Junior Firpo would be an ‘excellent signing’ for Leeds United, following news that he is scheduled for a medical at Elland Road later this week [Football Insider].

The Lowdown: Leeds United gear up for 2021/22

As the Whites get their ducks in a row ahead of 2021/22, many onlookers will be fascinated to see how Marcelo Bielsa goes about improving his side’s impressive ninth placed finish last time out.

Already active in the transfer market, the Yorkshiremen have completed a deal for ex-Birmingham City starlet Amari Miller, whilst they have also been linked heavily with a move for Hertha Berlin forward Matheus Cunha [Leeds Live].

However, they now look set to acquire Dominican Republic left-back Firpo, something that the BBC pundit has greeted with extreme positivity.

The Latest: Hutton lavishes praise on ‘excellent’ Firpo as he gets set for medical

Speaking in an interview with Football Insider, the former Tottenham Hotspur man claimed:

“He was at Betis before he joined Barcelona. He’s an outstanding player.

“I was reading quotes by Abidal, who signed him, some of the stuff he was saying about him. How he could be one of the best left-backs in the world, he just has to be patient and learn.

“I think this move just shows you what type of player Leeds are trying to attract. Reading about the style of player that he is, I think he’d definitely fit into a Bielsa side.

“It’s a position where they need someone in. It’s as simple as that and I think they’re aiming high. It obviously shows you where they’re trying to go with this squad.

“It’s only going to be exciting for the league if they come back even stronger because I thought they were excellent last year.

“I think that’d be an excellent signing.” [Football Insider].

The Verdict: Leeds United should look to get the Firpo deal over the line ahead of pre-season

Correctly, the 36-year-old points out that the qualities the 6ft ace possesses are in sync with the high-octane style of football Bielsa likes his sides to operate in – pace and versatility.

In 2020/21, Firpo made 18 appearances for Blaugrana, notching one goal alongside a solitary assist [Transfermarkt].

Advantageously for the Elland Road club, he is also adept at moving the ball quickly and effectively. Throughout last season, he averaged a commendable 89.7% pass accuracy, which would suit Leeds and Bielsa.

Moving towards pre-season, the Whites should look to finalise a deal for the 24-year-old full-back ahead of time so he can get bedded in to Bielsa’s high-intensity style as quickly as possible.

In other news, Leeds United are set to miss out on a reported signing target.
