Natal defeat North West to finish top of the table

Natal claimed a consummate seven-wicket win to finish on top of the final standings and earn a semi-final against the fourth-place finishers

Telford Vice24-Jan-2001Natal claimed a consummate seven-wicket win to finish on top of the final standings and earn a semi-final against the fourth-place finishers. An inept North West were dismissed for 141 and Natal cantered to 142 for three to win by seven wickets with all of 12.5 overs to spare. Not for nothing do North West turn out in maroon, because on the night – and for much of this seaon – they performed as mournfully as the bedraggled West Indies themselves. Played 10, lost eight was Potch plodders’ lot in this competition this summer, and it wasn’t difficult to see why. They batted as if they knew something Natal didn’t, namely that the home side would not have many runs to chase, and their bowling and fielding fairly creaked with the resignation of impending defeat. All that was left to Natal was to get the basics right, and this they managed without undue fuss. First they kept it tight to scythe through North West’s batting, before building their reply around the composed Wade Wingfield’s 73 not out.Shaun Pollock was a late inclusion in the Natal squad following the early finish to the third Test against Sri Lanka and the South African captain plainly revelled in the relatively stress free conditions to take two for 10 off 8.2 immaculate overs against batsmen who didn’t even try and forget who he was.Left-arm wrist spinner Gulam Bodi was the other star, using flight and intelligent variations of pace to take two for 26 off his full quota. Burton de Wett scored 35 before being stunningly run out by Wingfield’s throw from cover point, Arno Jacobs’ 26 was sprinkled with five fours and Gary Outram fashioned 33 runs off 71 balls. The rest should and will be spared a mention.Natal knew they needed just one half-decent innings to claim the points, and they got rather more than that in the shape of man-of-the-match Wingfield’s fine effort. It lasted 78 balls and included 10 fours and three sixes. Most of his support came in a third-wicket partnership of 80 shared with captain Dale Benkenstein, who scored 20.

Gers target Okumu speaks out

Glasgow Rangers transfer target Joseph Okumu has revealed he is ready to take the next step and leave current club Elfsborg.

The Lowdown: Gers want Okumu

The Gers have been heavily linked with a move for Okumu (Aftonbladet), who currently plays in the Swedish Allsvenskan.

Their fierce city rivals Celtic have also been linked with a move for the central defender, who has been compared to Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk (mozzartsportke.com).

The Latest: Okumu speaks out on future

Speaking to Swedish outlet Fotbolldirekt.se, Okumu admitted he is ready to take the next step. He said:

“Yes, definitely [will take the next step]. The most important thing is that I have already made an impression here.

“When I have done that, and both I and the club are satisfied. I think we have the same interests here, that I will take the next step.

“I let my agent take care of it. When there is something concrete, he will let me know, but we have not talked about this, so I am not so sure about it.”

The Verdict: Time to strike

These comments from the 24-year-old indicate that it is time for the Gers to strike if they want to take him to Ibrox. While not directed at Rangers explicitly, this is a come-and-get-me plea to any of the clubs interested in the Kenya international’s services.

It has previously been said Elfsborg are looking for a fee of at least 40m SEK – about £3.4m. That would be a considerable sum for the 55-time Scottish champions, but with them in with a chance of qualifying for the Champions League group stages, they should not be frugal as they look for new signings. It remains to be seen whether Ross Wilson and co react to Okumu’s words.

In other news, Rangers have been urged to sign this man with 24 goals/assists last term.

O time base do Vasco para 2017 ganha caras novas.

No sábado, o técnico Cristovão Borges fez o primeiro teste.

Easterns crash out of semis contention by one run

Grant Shimmin24-Jan-2001Easterns, needing a victory to edge Eastern Province out of semi-finalqualification, provided the disgruntled fans who braved a chilly WillowmoorePark until the midnight finish with a masterclass on the art of throwing agame away, as they eventually lost out by one run.Chasing a target revised via the Duckworth/Lewis method to 206 off 39 oversafter a lengthy rain interruption during Free State’s innings of 190 forfour, Easterns were in cruise control, reaching 73 without loss off theirfirst 10 overs. Even when the scoring rate was slowed markedly by theintroduction to the attack of debutant Rasheed Lewis and Johan van der Wath, the home side looked untroubled, with Derek Brand and Mike Rindel advancingthe total to 98 in the 18th over, before Rindel was caught and bowled by Vander Wath for 37 off 40 balls.Brand, who had reached his half-century off 60 balls, hitting eight sweetlystruck fours, added 44 for the second wicket with Andre Seymore, with theasking rate, which had been 5,3 to the over at the start of the innings, being kept comfortably below five. When Brand drove occasional left-arm spinner Morne van Wyk to Lewis atmid-on to fall for 75, though, the wobbles started. Skipper Deon Jordaan wasbowled for a duck four balls later by Van Wyk, but Seymore and Derek Crookesadded 31 and it seemed the Easterns carriage was back on the rails.Fans at Willowmoore Park, however, have learned not to count their chickensbefore they’ve hatched and when Seymore was run out by a direct hit fromGerhardus Liebenberg with the total on 173, just 33 away from the target, the real slide started.Twenty-six runs later, Easterns were nine down and last man in Andre Nel wasstriding to the crease, seven off three balls the target now. He managed asingle off the first and Aldo van den Berg got two off the next. Four offone was possible, but it was entirely in keeping with the panic-strickenpreceding overs that he was unable to propel the ball to the boundary andonly two were run. Another choke in a finish to the campaign that sawEasterns unable to win any of their last five matches, just getting that tiewith Eastern Province in a match that was also theirs for the taking.Free State had batted steadily throughout their innings, Kosie Venter (69)and Van Wyk (24) adding 50 for the second wicket before Venter and LouisWilkinson (52 not out off 58 balls) added 92 for the third in a standinterrupted by a thunderstorm and subsequent showers which forced thereduction in overs.Free State were able to hit only 10 fours in their innings, a figure Brandand Rindel comfortably passed on their own, with 14 between them. However,Johan van der Wath did hit 17-year-old Brendan Reddy for a big six in thevisitor’s final over, a blow that ultimately proved the difference betweenvictory and defeat.

How Palace could look under Cooper

This is set to be one of the busiest and most critical summers in the history of Crystal Palace Football Club.

Not only will the south London outfit have to contend with the departure of former manager Roy Hodgson, but over a dozen first-team players are currently heading for the exit door when their contracts expire at the end of the month.

Under Hodgson, the Eagles secured four mid-table finishes in the Premier League, but the former England boss has left behind an unstable side with the oldest average age in the top-flight.

Several big names have been linked with succeeding the 73-year-old at Selhurst Park, including Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Nuno Espirito Santo. However, a move for Swansea City boss Steve Cooper may be a more realistic option.

The young tactician has done a brilliant job in his two years with the Swans, guiding them to consecutive play-off finishes in the Championship, and he may feel ready to take the next step in his promising career.

With that in mind, if he did take the job, how would Cooper’s starting XI look next season once the summer transfer window has concluded? Here’s our prediction…

Cooper often played 3-4-1-2 throughout last season at the Liberty Stadium, but we’re tipping him to change to a slightly more cautious formation should he take charge of Palace.

In goal, Vicente Guaita didn’t have his best season in 2020/21, though his previous heroics should be more than enough for the Spanish shot-stopper to keep his place between the sticks.

We’re tipping mass changes to occur across the backline and not just because of the different system. The likes of Gary Cahill, Mamadou Sakho and Scott Dann are all set to become free agents at this moment in time.

However, the high-quality performances of Cahill last term should be enough to earn him a new deal, and reported transfer targets Joe Worrall (£10m) and Victor Nelsson (£9m) would provide the pace to cover for the ageing 35-year-old star.

Central midfield is another area of the pitch where Palace could lose key men, with James McCarthy and James McArthur yet to be offered a new deal.

Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher (£15m) is thought to attracting interest from Palace chairman Steve Parish after an impressive loan spell at West Bromwich Albion and he could partner fellow target Jon Moncayola (£10m) in the capital club’s engine room.

The dynamic duo would provide the legs and energy needed to play in Cooper’s set-up, and the experience of club-captain and set-piece specialist Luka Milivojevic sitting just behind them will add stability.

Promising academy graduate Tyrick Mitchell may just get the nod in the left-wing-back position ahead of Jeffrey Schlupp due to Cooper’s track record with young players, while the sale of Wilfried Zaha would be enough to fund a move for Sassuolo winger Jeremie Boga.

Zaha has continuously been linked with a £40m move to either Tottenham Hotspur or Everton this summer as the 28-year-old aims to fulfil his ambition of playing in Europe.

With money tight at Palace and any potential manager needing a significant transfer kitty to rebuild the squad, his departure could finally be on the cards.

Boga himself would likely cost at least £30m, meaning a strike partnership of Christian Benteke and Jean-Phillippe Mateta would bear the burden of scoring enough goals to avoid relegation.

And, in other news…Parish must sanction swoop for £18m-rated wizard this summer, Palace need him

More positives for Vics despite draw

Two more pieces in Victoria’s Pura Cup cricket final puzzle fell into place here today, even though the Bushrangers just failed toscore an outright win over Western Australia at the MCG

Paul Gough18-Mar-2001Two more pieces in Victoria’s Pura Cup cricket final puzzle fell into place here today, even though the Bushrangers just failed toscore an outright win over Western Australia at the MCG.No.3 Matthew Mott hit his highest first class score of 154 while Jon Moss showed he is a more than capable replacement for allrounder Ian Harvey with 62 as theVics came agonisingly close to scoring an outright win ahead of Friday’s final against Queensland at the Gabba.Set 292 to win off 84 overs, the Vics finished at 7-287 but looked to be heading for defeat when they crashed to 4-94.But Moss, playing only his second game, and Mott almost rescued the Vics with a 167-run sixth wicket stand.Victorian skipper Paul Reiffel was particularly delighted to see Mott back amongst the runs after a recent rough trot.”It was a huge bonus for him and for us and his confidence will be sky high going into the final,” Reiffel said of Mott who used to play for Queensland. As a result of today’s draw, the Vics finished eight points adrift of leaders the Bulls but 10 points clear of Tasmania and New South Wales in second place and willnow contest their second straight Gabba final.Last year the Vics could only draw the final, handing the title to the Bulls, but this season head north far better prepared, even though they have not won outright inBrisbane since 1983-84.Not only are the Bulls missing Matthew Hayden, Michael Kasprowicz and Andrew Symonds to international duty and possibly Martin Love to injury, the Vics haveshown they are able to cover missing Aussie stars such as Shane Warne, Damien Fleming and Ian Harvey.Moss’ inclusion in particular has boosted the Vics, who for so long have been unable to cover Harvey when he is on international duty. And the batting line-up, already one of the strongest in the country with the likes of Matthew Elliott, Jason Arnberger and Brad Hodge, now looks even better withMott’s return to form. The gritty Queenslander, whose 23 in 130 minutes in the first innings was painful to watch, was in sparkling touch today in scoring his first century of the season. For Western Australia, today’s result completed a miserable season with the Warriors finishing in second last place but at least opener Mike Hussey ended theseason in style, making 137 in his team’s second innings of 4(dec)-295.

-A torcida é impressionante. É o maior vencedor do estado.

-Vou fazer meu melhor. Tiveram paciência, me entenderam, sempre me trataram com respeito. O mínimo que tenho que fazer é jogar, honrar a camisa. Isso não vai faltar. É minha escolha, não preciso nem falar. Preciso mostrar dentro de campo agora
