Glasgow Rangers have been dealt a fresh blow with Ryan Jack after he suffered a calf injury during the 4-1 win over Dundee United.

What’s the word?

Jack picked up a minor knock, which Gerrard said will keep him out potentially for up to two weeks, thus ruling him out of the return fixture against Royal Antwerp at Ibrox in the Europa League on Thursday night.

“Nothing has changed on Kemar Roofe and James Tavernier, we will work closely with our medical team to get them back as soon as possible,” said Gerrard in quotes reported by Glasgow Live.

“Ryan Jack is more positive, not any muscle damage but he is likely to be a couple of weeks but nothing long-term.”

Devastating blow for Steven Gerrard

After signing from Aberdeen in 2017, Rangers fans have become well accustomed to seeing Jack ruled out for a considerable amount of time in recent years.

Of course, Gerrard has since confirmed there isn’t any muscular damage, but it’s easy to see why the Ibrox boss is understandably being so cautious, especially considering his recent track record.

With plenty of time left between now and the end of the season, rushing Jack back from injury too quickly could have a detrimental effect on their hopes of both domestic and European success.

But there’s no doubting it will be a bitter pill to swallow for Gerrard, who will once again be without one of his key men when Antwerp make the trip to Ibrox tonight.

Despite their fine run of form, Rangers have still lost one game and drawn three that Jack has missed, while ex-Ibrox striker Jonatan Johansson has recently heaped praise on his former charge.

He said: “Ryan’s always available to receive the ball. He takes on that responsibility.

“He understands the game really well. Remember, he’s also played at right-back before for Scotland so he understands different positions and his positional sense on the pitch is excellent.

“He’s obviously very good on the ball and I think something Steven has brought out in him is getting forward.

“He gets in the box now, he shoots and scores goals. So his all-round game is getting better and better.

“I can’t stress the importance of him being in the team. He got a new contract recently and with stats like this, that’s no surprise.”

Jack, who is currently valued at £2.7m via Transfermarkt, has established himself as an ever-present under Gerrard, having made 109 appearances for the manager, and earning 10 caps for his country in the process.

His absence, therefore, will be a bitter blow for Gerrard, as he will no doubt be concerned about their chances without one of his star midfielders having conceded three against Antwerp last time out.

Tottenham Hotspur legend Gary Mabbutt insists that there is no reason for fans to panic over the club’s form in such a bizarre season.

The Premier League season is being contested behind closed doors because of the ongoing pandemic and Mabbutt has told Football FanCast that such conditions are only likely to add to the bizarre results we have seen at times this season.

Indeed, Spurs have struggled under Jose Mourinho and fell to ninth in the Premier League table at one point.

Their win over Burnley at the weekend means they are still just six points off the top four, though, with a game in hand on fourth-placed West Ham United.

And Mabbutt insists there is absolutely no reason for fans to worry given that the season is largely upside down.

He has cited Liverpool as an example, with the Premier League champions, who lost just three games last season, currently sixth in the Premier League table, with seven defeats to their name.

They are 19 points off league leaders Manchester City, and are almost certain to lose their title this season.

Speaking to FFC earlier this week, Mabbutt said: “People talk about how we’ve fallen away since December, we were top of the table mid December, and then we slipped away a little bit.

“Well, it’s exactly that: slipped away a little bit. In real terms, in a normal season, dropping from top to ninth would be, ‘how did that happen?’ 

“But in this current season, when you’ve got the champions who pulverised everyone before them last season, lying in sixth place, whatever, and losing their last four games at home. Excuse me, it’s just an absolutely one off season that is seeing results no one would expect.”

Mabbutt also expressed his sympathy for the conditions the players are being forced to play in, with him making the point that the Premier League is being played in “training ground conditions”.

He added: “It’s proven football is just not football, as we know it, without fans in the stadium. I mean, I feel sorry for the players. And for the staff.

“It’s the crowd in the stadium that wants to create the passion, the intensity, the excitement, it’s the players that rebound off that support, off the crowd. And it’s like playing in the biggest football league in the world, under training ground conditions, and that is not easy.

“For players to build themselves up, getting mentally right to get there, totally concentrated, is very, very difficult. And I do feel sorry for them. But that’s the way it is.”

وعن الأهلي، أفاد: “لطالما أخرجنا الأهلي من ربع النهائي، وهذا بحد ذاته يوحي بالتحديات التي سنواجهها”.

وشدد: “علينا فقط أن نفهم أنه في هذه المرحلة من المنافسة، يتطلع الجميع للفوز بها، لذا فقط جهز نفسك وتأكد من أن فريقك قوي بما يكفي للمنافسة”.

وأفاد: “قد يكون التحدي الأكبر الذي تواجهه المجموعة هو أنها تنطوي على سفر مكثف إلى السودان، إنها مجموعة سنقاتل بجد لتحقيق التقدم فيها نحن على ثقة من أن الفريق الذي لدينا قادر على مساعدتنا”.

فاز صن داونز على الهلال 2-0 على ملعب لوفتوس فيرسفيلد في المجموعة الثانية بدوري أبطال إفريقيا 2020-21، وتعادل 0-0 في أم درمان، حيث تشكل الحرارة الشديدة في الدولة الواقعة جنوب الصحراء عاملاً صعبًا للفرق الزائرة.

Manchester United were frustrated against AC Milan in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening with a late goal pegging the Red Devils back.

The hosts looked like they were going to seal a 1-0 victory thanks to Amad Diallo’s first goal for the club, only for Simon Kjaer’s header to deny them in the final moments. It was a frustrating night in all with a host of chances being missed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s troops.

It wasn’t all bad news, however, with a few eye-catching displays – one of those coming from 31-year-old Nemanja Matic.

The Serbian destroyer was deployed alongside Scott McTominay in the centre of the park for the hosts and arguably echoed back to his peak with a thoroughly dominant performance against the Italian giants.

According to WhoScored, the £10.8m-rated former Chelsea man produced no fewer than five tackles, with no player on either side contributing more. It was a brilliant defensive performance from Matic throughout the 90 minutes as he also contributed a further three interceptions and two blocks.

His contributions were not just limited to reclaiming the ball for the Red Devils, either. Matic actually made more passes than any of his team-mates with 67, whilst he also had a better pass success rate (86.6%) than the inspirational Bruno Fernandes (84%), per WhoScored.

The Serbian’s performance was all the more impressive then considering that he was making just his seventh start in all competitions since the turn of the year.

With Matic confirming to O Jogo before the match that he had no intention of departing Old Trafford for the foreseeable future, he could potentially be a crucial player for United as they continue their challenges in the Premier League, Europa League and FA Cup, especially if he continues to be a dominant figure in midfield.

Everton can land Carlo Ancelotti his own Ilkay Gundogan in rumoured transfer target Mahmoud Dahoud of Borussia Dortmund.

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Mail, the Toffees are monitoring Dahoud’s situation at the Signal Iduna Park after his recent resurgence under interim head coach Edin Terzic.

Dahoud struggled to establish himself in the BVB midfield following the sacking of Lucien Favre in December but has been given minutes in his side’s last seven Bundesliga games.

His efforts since the start of February have helped Dortmund enjoy an upturn in form, beating rivals FC Schalke 04 and storming to a two-goal lead at Bayern Munich before the Bavarian side mounted a devastating comeback.

Dahoud’s role in Terzic’s plans is understood to have Premier League clubs on alert ahead of the summer transfer market, with Everton, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City all tracking the Syria-born 25-year-old.

Chelsea and City had sought to sign the £7.5m-rated talent from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2017 before he sealed his Dortmund switch, and penned a five-year, £69,000-per-week contract that is due to have just 12-months remaining this June.

Dahoud also had European interest in January with Ruhr Nachrichten, via Bulinews, citing Serie A side US Sassuolo plus Ligue 1 duo Olympique de Marseille and AS Monaco as potential destinations for the Germany international.

He won his first two caps under Joachim Low during the October and November breaks and could be named in his squad for the March internationals on Friday, after scoring his second of the season in Dortmund’s Champions League Last 16 win over Sevilla.

Should Everton sign Dahoud?

While Dahoud had been a bit-part player for Dortmund earlier in the campaign, he has begun to establish a crucial role for himself under Terzic that could see Everton look fondly on a swoop in the summer transfer market.

The Toffees’ Director of Football Marcel Brands holding successful negotiations with BVB over Dahoud could also see the Goodison Park outfit hire Ancelotti his own Gundogan, as the 25-year-old has been likened to the Manchester City star previously.

Dahoud and Gundogan – the man he replaced at the Signal Iduna Park – are seen to operate with a similar silky style when in possession, able to glid into an attacking position and provide either the perfect pass or test opposing goalkeepers.

Pep Guardiola has benefited greatly from Gundogan this term, and lauded the ex-Dortmund star as “one of the most intelligent, wisest players I have ever trained, I have ever seen,” earlier this month.

Gundogan is presently the Sky Blues’ top-scorer in the Premier League with 12 goals in 23 games, even if he prefers to operate outside of the spotlight.

There may be no guarantees that Dahoud can offer the same clinical touch in the final third, yet there would not be much that Ancelotti would doubt about the midfielder offering at Everton.

“He covers a lot of ground, can dribble really well and is quick. He can do a lot of things,” Favre said, via quotes by Bundesliga.com, ahead of Dahoud’s maiden call-up to the senior Germany side.
