Former Leeds United midfielder David Prutton has shown some support for current Whites striker Patrick Bamford in his latest Yorkshire Evening Post column, after he has struggled to find the net in pre-season.

What did he say?

Well, the former Middlesbrough man has received plenty of criticism on Twitter from the Elland Road faithful in 2019, and is yet to score in three pre-season appearances for the Yorkshire outfit.

Prutton was speaking about players that may be a little low on confidence to YEP, saying: “Leeds want the Bamford that scored a bagful of goals for Middlesbrough several seasons ago, not the one that has floated around from club to club in recent years.

“The other side of it is that Bamford will be as desperate as any of those Leeds fans to have a goalscoring return to be proud of.

“He doesn’t want to be a striker that is getting into those positions but not scoring the chances that are made.

“He will want to be the person that is converting them and becomes a hero and Chris Wood is a great example.”

Unwarranted criticism

Prutton mentioned Bamford’s time at the Riverside Stadium, but the fact of the matter is that his current goals-per-game ratio is better with Leeds than it was with Boro – one every 2.5 matches compared to one every 2.94 for their Championship rivals, albeit in 72 fewer appearances.

In addition, nine of his 11 league goals for the Teesside outfit during the 2017/18 campaign actually came in a run of seven outings between February and March, which suggests he is something of a confidence striker.

10 goals in 25 games for Marcelo Bielsa’s men isn’t that bad at all, especially when you consider that the 25-year-old didn’t sign until the final day of July in 2018, and also missed 22 encounters because of injury during his debut campaign at Elland Road.

If you take Bamford’s record of scoring every 161 minutes in 1,449 minutes of league action last season and stretch it out to the full 46 games in a campaign, the former Chelsea youngster would potentially hit the 25-goal mark.

While his pre-season may not have been up to scratch so far, if he can stay fit for the entire season and get a couple of early goals under his belt, there is no reason why he can’t go on to be the goalscorer that Leeds have needed since the exit of Chris Wood.

With Kemar Roofe being ruled out through injury for the next four weeks, the onus is on him to step up in the opening weeks of the 2019/20 season, and he may just need that little extra bit of support from his own fans.

According to The Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United have agreed to sell goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell to Burnley ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

The report claims that the Clarets will pay £3.5m for the 22-year-old, who is behind Kiko Casilla when it comes to the pecking order at Elland Road.

Peacock-Farrell was due to see his contract with the Whites expire next summer and he is now set for a move to the Premier League.

It has been a frustrating transfer window for the Leeds fans, but not too many are bothered to see the back of Peacock-Farrell.

The stopper actually kept 10 clean sheets in 28 Championship appearances for Marcelo Bielsa’s side during the 2018-19 campaign.

However, the news that the Northern Ireland international is on the verge of leaving Elland Road has been welcomed by many of the Leeds supporters on social media.

West Ham United are closing in on the signing of Albian Ajeti from FC Basel, per ClaretandHugh.

What’s the word?

The Hammers entered into talks for the Switzerland international earlier this week and the report states that the club are close to finalising the transfer.

The deal for Ajeti will reportedly cost the club £11m as the Irons sign their second striker of the summer transfer window.

West Ham broke their club transfer record to secure a deal to acquire Sebastian Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt last month but Javier Hernandez is currently the only other out-and-out striker on the books.

A key addition

The signing of Ajeti could be just as important as that of Haller.

While the latter grabbed more headlines, for understandable reasons, football clubs need depth and the signing of the Basel star will give the Irons exactly that.

A prolific player in the Swiss Super League, he has scored 43 goals in 96 games for Basel and has already netted twice in three games this season.

A different option to both Haller and Hernandez, manager Manuel Pellegrini is likely to be remarkably pleased with the purchase as he prepares his squad for their opening game of the season against Manchester City.

Indeed, he can now breathe easy should one of Haller and Hernandez pick up an injury.

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to Rafael Benitez’s column for The Athletic, as he revealed the reason for his exit from St. James’ Park.

Newcastle fans were devastated when Benitez left the club this summer, but that didn’t stop managing director Lee Charnley from criticising the Spaniard in Sunday’s match programme.

Charnley claimed Benitez had been offered the fairest deal the club could reasonably afford, but instead chose to move to China for the money.

Benitez has since disputed that, writing in The Athletic: “Newcastle’s board had a year to sort out my contract but, when we met after the end of last season, they didn’t make me a proper offer.

“They told me they didn’t want to invest in the academy or the training ground – if they like, I can explain the reason why Mike Ashley refused to do that.

“Their idea of a project was a policy of signing players under 24 and, in my opinion, the budget available was not enough to compete for the top 10.

“After that meeting, I knew they would not come back with a serious offer and, when it arrived, 19 days later, it was for the same salary as three years earlier and with less control over signings.

“After three years of unfulfilled promises, I didn’t trust them.”

If what Benitez says is true, then it confirms all the suspicions the Toon Army have had about the Mike Ashley regime.

The former Liverpool boss only wanted enough spending to break into the top ten, yet was not set to be granted his wish or given control over the transfers themselves.

This also perhaps confirms the criticism that Steve Bruce may be a “yes man”, as he is seemingly happy to work under such conditions.

وتابع: “التأهل لن يكون سهلًا، كل الأندية في المجموعة ستواجه صعوبة، ولو فزنا على الأهلي في أرضنا ستكون الفرصة الأكبر لنا في التأهل لربع النهائي، وفيتا كلوب يمتلك الطموح أيضا”.

Some QPR fans have taken to Twitter to express their concern over Yoann Barbet, after the centre-back embarrassed himself against Swansea with a woeful performance.

The Frenchman, signed on a free transfer this summer after leaving Brentford, conceded a penalty with the score level at 1-1 – a moment which swung the game in Swansea’s favour.

Borja Baston dispatched the spot kick, and from then on the R’s simply couldn’t get back into the game.

Barbet, 26, had already conceded a penalty this season before his slip up against the Swans, meaning he has given away two spot kicks already in just four games – it’s safe to say he hasn’t had a great start to the campaign.
