West Ham eyeing swoop for Josip Brekalo

David Moyes has led West Ham to one of their finest seasons in recent memory, taking them to the Europa League semi-finals and securing continental qualification for next term as well.

The 59-year-old will believe that he can now take the Irons to the next level, and this may require some positive transfer business during the summer.

According to Calciomercato, West Ham are interested in a move for Josip Brekalo this summer, who has spent the season on loan at Torino, with the winger’s parent club Wolfsburg keen on selling him in the summer.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham news!”]

Brekalo could be available for just €10m (£8.5m) and this could be an excellent piece of business if Moyes can pull it off.

Moyes must land Brekalo for West Ham

West Ham have done brilliantly this season despite relying on the same core group of players as last term, and the addition of attacking options remains one of the priorities ahead of the transfer window.

With only one player in the squad scoring more than ten goals this season (Jarrod Bowen with 12), it’s clear to see where the weakness lies, and Moyes needs to improve that with the prospective signing of Brekalo.

The Croatian has scored seven times and registered two assists this season at Torino, a decent if not spectular tally. At only 23 years old though, he has the time to improve even further, and a move to the Premier League could be the catalyst for him to utilise his potential.

Compared to Bowen (2.96), Said Benrahma (2.86), and Michail Antonio (3.19), Brekalo generates 4.22 shot-creating actions per 90 minutes, a considerably higher return than the West Ham trio.

The Croatian (80) also puts more crosses into the opposition penalty area compared to Bowen (53) and Benrahma (64), creating more goalscoring opportunities for team-mates.

Journalist Ronan Murphy stated that Brekalo will “torment defenders” everywhere, and with his form also being dubbed “frightening” by Josh Bunting, it’s no wonder that Moyes is looking to add the 23-year-old to the West Ham squad over the summer. It’s an opportunity that he cannot afford to let slip.

Leeds: Hay drops Bamford injury update

Phil Hay has dropped a worrying injury update concerning Leeds United centre-forward Patrick Bamford.

What’s the latest?

In comments made on a recent Q&A on The Athletic, the Leeds United correspondent hinted that, after being left out of Jesse Marsch’s 20-man matchday squad to face Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, the 28-year-old may not be able to make a return to fitness before the crucial trip to Brentford this weekend.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Regarding the England international’s absence at Elland Road, Hay said: “No Patrick Bamford in the 20. Will be Brentford for him, if at all.”

Leeds supporters will be sweating

While it is true that both 18th placed Burnley and 16th placed Everton have a game in hand on the Whites, the point gained from Pascal Struijk’s late equaliser against the Seagulls will have undoubtedly given the Elland Road faithful hope that their side could well go on to pull off what would be a rather miraculous escape from the drop.

However, in order to do so, Leeds will need both Aston Villa on Thursday and Newcastle United on Sunday to do them a big favour against the Clarets, while the Whites simply must ensure that they take all three points home from Brentford Community Stadium this weekend – a task which will be made a great deal more difficult is Bamford is once again out.

Indeed, the £18m-rated forward has been a huge miss for Leeds this season, with the 28-year-old’s two goals and two assists over nine Premier League appearances in 2021/22 being pale in comparison to his return of 17 goals and eight assists over 38 top-flight fixtures last season.

As such, it is clear to see just how big of a miss the £74k-per-week striker has been in the Leeds frontline this term, with the Englishman’s availability for what is undoubtedly the Whites’ most important game of the season sure to be something that will have both Marsch and supporters sweating throughout the week – as Bamford remaining sidelined would certainly come as a huge blow to Leeds’ hopes of remaining a Premier League side in 2022/23.

Postecoglou must axe Celtic’s disaster duo

Celtic’s squad underwent some major surgery at Parkhead during the previous summer transfer window.

Not only did the Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou bring a significant number of new players in during this period, but they also waved goodbye to some familiar faces as well.

Players like Scott Brown and Olivier Ntcham left on free transfers, whereas others left for considerable amounts of money such as Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer.

This significant overhaul of the squad seems to have done the trick for the Bhoys as Ange Postecoglou’s side are on the verge of securing the SPFL title having won 28 of their 36 league games.

Looking ahead to the next summer transfer window, two current players in Celtic’s ranks that we feel should be on their way out this time around are Boli Bolingoli and Mikey Johnston.

With the left-back only making two appearances for the Hoops this season and spending some time away from the squad to train on his own, this doesn’t make him likely to be in Postecoglou’s plans for the future.

Slammed for his “appalling” behaviour when he broke the government’s protocols surrounding the global pandemic back in 2020 by former Bhoys manager Neil Lennon, this may well explain why he’s not been in the frame for most of this current season.

Taking this into account, if the club can cash in on him this summer before his contract runs out in the summer of 2023, this would be the best option for them from a financial point of view.

As for Johnston, while he’s had more action than the full-back this season by making 20 appearances across all competitions, he’s only started three of the 11 league games he’s appeared in.

His last appearance in the league came back in January during Celtic’s 2-0 win over Hibernian.

In terms of his attacking output, the winger has failed to register even one goal and only provided one assist, which, given the hefty number of goals the Hoops have scored this season, is rather dismal.

This was backed up when the 23-year-old’s crossing ability was described as “pathetic” by Willie Miller during the Scottish League Cup final back in December.

Moving forward, if the 56-year-old Hoops boss is considering another big summer overhaul, getting rid of this disaster duo that are bleeding the club dry should be at the top of his priority list.

Liverpool got rinsed by Christian Benteke

When Liverpool unloaded £32.5m on the signing of Christian Benteke back in July of 2015, it raised some eyebrows despite the Belgian having impressed in the Premier League alight for Aston Villa.

It was, at the time, a large sum of money, but he had just scored 13 goals in 29 league appearances so it made some sense.

There were some reservations about whether he would be able to adapt to the style of play that the Reds wanted, but at the time former Liverpool striker John Aldridge admitted he was “optimistic” to see the “quick, very strong, very aggressive” gem lead the line.

However, Brendan Rodgers only lasted until October of that season before he was sacked and replaced by Jurgen Klopp.

Instantly, those reservations over play style became far more intense. The man who had been signed for big money and was on a reported £100k-per-week fell to the wayside, as the German preferred slick football that did not require Benteke’s brute strength.

Ten goals in 42 appearances in all competitions was not a terrible return, but he was renowned for the chances he would squander during this period. He missed nine big chances in the Premier League alone.

This goal return meant that Liverpool had to pay £3.81m for every goal he scored for the club, as when factoring in his wages, the Belgian flop cost an eye-watering £38.1m.

Football writer Stefan Buczko labelled the 31-year-old  “one of the worst strikers I’ve ever seen”, and also dubbed him “utter useless”.

The only saving grace that FSG have is that they managed to offload him just a year after he was signed, with Crystal Palace willing suitors. They recouped a £27m fee, which was impressive considering his average form at Anfield.

However given the year he spent on the salary he did, making £5.6m just on the wages, it meant that in total the Merseyside outfit took a £11.1m loss on the misfiring marksman.

This represents a large outlay for the times, trusting a manager only to sack him soon into the season and replace him with someone also unwilling to play to Benteke’s strengths.

The striker rinsed FSG blind with this deal, but they made a rod for their own back with this transfer.

Manchester United should unleash Garnacho

Anthony Elanga has been a regular fixture in Manchester United’s Premier League games under Erik ten Hag but the Dutch manager may have an ever better youngster waiting in the wings at Old Trafford in Alejandro Garnacho.

Elanga has featured in six out of seven of United’s fixtures in all competitions so far this season but has just one assist to his name, averaging a disappointing 6.50/10 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Garnacho, meanwhile, has just two substitute appearances to his name so far this season and with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign, Ten Hag must give him more first-team opportunities if he wants to keep him at Old Trafford.

The Argentine winger joined United as a 16-year-old from Atletico Madrid and has caught the eye with his performances in the academy, contributing 22 goals and 11 assists in 53 appearances for United’s various youth sides.

Elanga was registering very similar numbers in United’s academy, hitting 26 goals and 16 assists in 69 appearances, which suggests that Garnacho could soon make the step up into the first team squad.

The 18-year-old was called up to Argentina’s national side when he was just 17, while Argentina U20s manager Javier Mascherano also sang his praises earlier this year, suggesting that Garnacho has “huge potential”.

The teenage star caught the eye at Old Trafford when his brace helped United win the FA Youth Cup last season, with manager Travis Binnion saying:

“That boy could be in any stadium in the world and he wouldn’t care. That’s his make-up. A few of them are like that and that’s why they are going to have good careers.”

However, Garnacho has been limited to just 19 minutes of first-team action so far this season and needs to be afforded more game time if he is going to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

Thursday’s game against Sheriff Tiraspol could represent the ideal opportunity for Ten Hag to unleash the 18-year-old, as with regular football, there seems little to suggest that Garnacho can’t be a star for United in the near future.

Middlesbrough make "impressive" manager top target to replace Rob Edwards

Middlesbrough have made a manager with “an impressive CV” a top target to replace Rob Edwards, and it would be a “significant coup” if they can get a deal done.

Edwards confirmed as Wolves boss as Middlesbrough receive £3m

Wolves confirmed the appointment of Rob Edwards as their new head coach on a three-and-a-half year deal on Wednesday.

The 42-year-old left the Riverside and agreed a contract until 2029 with Wanderers after they sacked Vitor Pereira earlier this month. It is reported Boro will receive around £3million in compensation after Edwards only joined them in June on a three-year contract.

Edwards, who managed Luton in the Premier League, begins a fourth spell at Wolves after making 111 appearances as a player as well as enjoying time as a coach and interim boss. He will be joined by assistant head coach Harry Watling after the pair worked together at Middlesbrough, with the rest of his backroom staff to be confirmed in the near future.

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said: “I know Rob very well and I have seen his growth in different jobs. He’s a very good person, he knows the club very well, he knows the city, the fans and he is very talented.

“When he was a youth coach here, he showed his tactical awareness, but after he took first-team jobs he started to grow his own identity, character and leadership.

“We need to refresh the whole club with a new coach’s philosophy, bringing his own identity and ideas, and we can build on that. We are at a new chapter for the club and Rob will be a key piece of that.”

For Boro, it is now about finding a swift replacement as they aim to continue their Championship promotion push without Edwards.

Middlesbrough make Steven Gerrard a top manager target

As reported by Rousing the Kop and journalist Graeme Bailey, Steven Gerrard is among the top targets for Middlesbrough to replace Edwards.

Steve Gibson is a long-term admirer of the former Rangers and Aston Villa boss, who is out of work after leaving Al-Ettifaq in January.

Gerrard almost returned to Ibrox last month and is open to a return to the dugout, with a move to the Riverside something that could appeal to him.

Gerrard has never managed in the Championship, with his most successful period as a manager coming in Scotland, winning the league title with Rangers.

Imagine him & Mateta: £17m "nightmare" is in London to join Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace will no doubt be eager to put this hectic summer transfer window behind them.

Unfortunately, not even sealing a double whammy of successes in the FA Cup and Community Shield would be able to keep Eberechi Eze fixed at Selhurst Park, with the former Eagles attacking midfielder poached by fellow Premier League side Arsenal late on.

However, Palace could make the window look a tad more rosy very soon, with a verbal agreement now reportedly in place for Oliver Glasner’s men to sign this £17m attacker.

Palace verbally agree deal for £17m star

The Eagles might well still wave goodbye to Marc Guehi before the 7pm deadline, but there will be rays of positivity all the same regarding one incoming.

As has been reported by Fabrizio Romano, via X, Getafe ace Christantus Uche is now in London to seal a late switch to Palace, with a deal between the La Liga outfit and Glasner and Co. verbally agreed.

Uche has been subject to widespread interest from the Premier League this summer, with Wolverhampton Wanderers even close at one point to bringing in the £17m star.

But, it looks as if the Eagles will be the winners for his coveted signature after all, as Uche now dreams of forming a terrifying duo up top with Palace man of the moment Jean-Philippe Mateta.

How Uche and Mateta could link up

Mateta would get the ball rolling for his beloved side against Aston Villa last time out, as this calmly tucked away penalty then opened the floodgates to hand the visitors a comfortable 3-0 victory.

That bumps up the clinical Frenchman’s early-season total to three goals from six clashes, and with Uche soon to be by his side by all accounts, his overall tally of 49 strikes for the Eagles will surely just rise and rise.

The £17m Nigerian already has a goal and assist next to his name this season from just three La Liga encounters, but it’s his consistent excellence last season in the testing Spanish top-flight that will be music to the ears of Palace – and Mateta in particular – with Uche picking up six assists, despite only averaging a low 11.6 accurate passes per clash.

Mateta often only needs a split second to wreak havoc himself, with a mere 22.6 touches averaged per league game across his standout 2024/25 offering for Palace in the Premier League, but a lethal 14 strikes would still arrive at his door, nonetheless.

Moreover, the one-time Wolves target often uses his strength to fire away goals, as seen in his high 6.8 duels won on average during his breakout campaign in Spain, with four strikes also coming his way to be branded a “defender’s nightmare” by scout Antonio Mango.

Of course, Mateta – coming in at a lofty 6-foot-4 frame – has also often used his brute power as an advantage, with Arsenal great Thierry Henry even going as far as to herald the Selhurst Park fan favourite as an “old-fashioned striker” for his physical approach.

With Eze heartbreakingly gone, adding in Uche could get the Palace fanbase back on side, particularly if he goes on to get even more out of an already red-hot Mateta.
