The former got Lancashire going with the second ball of his third over, snapping up a low return catch off Duckett’s leading edge to send him back for 26.Just two runs were added before Anderson struck again, former team-mate Steven Crook attempting to pull a short ball from outside off stump only to be caught by Luke Procter at mid-on.That allowed Anderson to finish with 5 for 41 to go with his first-innings effort of 5 for 48, a statement of intent ahead of the international programme.Northamptonshire retained a theoretical chance as long as Middlebrook remained but when he drilled Chapple to the waiting Ashwell Prince for 87, the result was all but settled. Kabir Ali applied the finishing touch, accounting for Olly Stone and Azharullah to close with 3 for 17 as Lancashire banked 19 points.Off the field, Lancashire announced the appointment of former club captain Mark Chilton to the coaching staff. Although Chapple has taken an expanded leadership role in Moores’ absence, a vacancy behind the scenes was still created and Chilton, who retired in 2011, will be a popular choice at Old Trafford.Director of cricket Mike Watkinson said: “Following the recent changes in our coaching structure, it was vital that we had some continuity to enable us to carry on our progress.”He has demonstrated his leadership skills in his role of club captain and he will have a great influence on the squad. He is Lancashire through and through and had a successful career at Emirates Old Trafford. He hasn’t been out of the first-class game for long and is in touch with the requirements of the modern day cricketer.”Chilton added: “I am thrilled at the prospect of returning to Lancashire. We have an exciting crop of emerging young players and I am looking forward to working with them.”

SLC in talks with Rhodes for brief coaching stint

Saka passed fit! Arsenal team news and predicted XI for north London derby at Tottenham

The Gunners take on Tottenham on Sunday in the second north London derby of the season

Arsenal take on Spurs on Sunday looking to complete a league double over their local rivals for the first time in eight years.

The Gunners cruised to a 3-1 win against Antonio Conte’s side earlier in the season, but have failed to win on each of their last eight trips to Tottenham – a run dating back to March 2014.

So how are Mikel Arteta’s side shaping up ahead of Sunday’s contest? GOAL takes a look.

Getty ImagesArsenal team news

Bukayo Saka is expected to be fit despite being forced off with 15 minutes remaining against Oxford United in the FA Cup.

The Arsenal winger trained with the rest of the squad on Saturday and Mikel Arteta confirmed he should be fine to feature.

Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus remains sidelined as he continues his recovery from knee surgery, while Reiss Nelson (hamstring) is also still out.

Cedric Soares (calf) is a doubt, but Emile Smith Rowe should make a Premier League squad for the first time in four months having made his return in the FA Cup at Oxford.

Bukayo Saka: Arsenal will fancy their chances of hurting Spurs down the flanks on Sunday and so Saka looks like being key once again. The winger is expected to be up against Ivan Perisic, who loves to get forward. So that should leave plenty of space for Saka to try to exploit behind him. If the Arsenal star can take advantage, then the visitors could be in for a good day.

Talking point

Arsenal’s behaviour has come under real scrutiny in recent weeks. Mikel Arteta has had his touchline manner heavily criticised, while the club has been charged for the conduct of its players following the games against Newcastle and Oxford United. Arsenal lost their heads in the north London derby at Spurs last season and paid the price, losing 3-0 after Rob Holding’s early red card. They can’t afford to let that happen this time around, so Arteta must ensure his team remains calm amid the cauldron-like atmosphere.

GettyWhat has Arteta said?

Speaking ahead of the game, Arteta said that his players should relish the challenge of putting previous poor results at Tottenham behind them. “We haven’t won there, so that’s the challenge that we have ahead of us,” said the Arsenal boss. “We’re going to have to focus on playing well and doing what we have to do to win the game. That’s the challenge that we have. We have to beat them at their place. That’s the way we have prepared the game.”

The Argentine was brought on in place of Brahim Diaz with the game evenly poised at 2-2 on Wednesday evening at the Santiago Bernabeu. Not many would have imagined that the teenager would give his side the lead but a speculative effort from a distance in the 84th minute ended up in the back of the net which paved the way for a 4-2 victory. The goal earned him a place in the history books as he became the second youngest Argentine, at 19 years two months and 21 days, to score in the Champions League.

Messi holds the record as the youngest to achieve this feat after he scored for Barcelona against Panathinaikos in a 5-0 rout at Camp Nou on November 2, 2005, at 18 years four months and nine days. Earlier on Wednesday evening, Garnacho was in the second spot after he finished off a brilliant move against Galatasaray to open his Champions League account at 19 years, four months and 29 days. However, Paz pushed him to the third spot after scoring in his second European top-flight appearance.

WHAT NICO PAZ SAID

Speaking after the match, Paz said: "A dream come true. The entire team & staff has congratulated me. We are an incredible group.”

Paz will hope to earn more minutes with Real Madrid's first team after scoring in the Champions League. The club is going through an injury crisis and the Argentine should be geared up to make the most of the opportunity when Los Blancos get back to action against Granada on Saturday.

Man City go top of the table! Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp on fire as dominant hosts beat Everton to leapfrog Chelsea into pole position in WSL

Shaw & Hemp on target for CityHome team dominant throughout matchGo ahead of Chelsea at top of WSLGettyTELL ME MORE

City, who have won all 16 of their league games against the Merseyside team, were behind Chelsea only on goals scored at the top of the table heading into the clash at the Joie Stadium. They were well fired up for this game, too, dominating from beginning to end against Brian Sorensen's team.

City enjoyed the majority of early possession but had a hard time getting time and space in dangerous areas. After a few tame efforts, Everton made it easy for the home team when Justine Vanhaevermaet crumbled under pressure and played a short pass inside the box that went directly to Bunny Shaw, who suddenly had an abundance of time and space to smash in the opener.

The goal gave the in-form hosts a massive boost as they looked even more dangerous from then on, with Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp sending dangerous balls into the box that Shaw was unable to connect with. By half-time, 1-0 seemed a low score considering City had 13 shots throughout the first 45 minutes. Everton, meanwhile, were gifted one chance late in the half when goalkeeper Khiara Keating played the ball straight to Rikke Madsen, but her weak shot was straight back at the youngster.

After Shaw missed a great opportunity by heading over the bar, it was Hemp who doubled City's lead, combining with Coombs in the middle of the pitch before driving forward and sending a long-range effort rolling into the bottom corner. Everton were not down and out, though, as City suddenly looked flustered at the back and gave the ball away, resulting in Hanna Bennison smashing in a beauty of a goal from outside the box. Both teams pushed on for another goal, but neither could find a way past their opponents' goalkeeper.

While it was Shaw who opened the scoring and had a whopping six attempts, Hemp must get the nod for the hero of the occasion. Not only did she fire in a lovely second goal for her team, the England international linked up expertly with her team-mates, had four shots in total and put in great effort to win the ball as City pressed high up.

THE BIG LOSER

Everton were always on the backfoot but they did a great job of limiting City to weak attempts for the first 15 minutes. That all changed, though, when Vanhaevermaet's awful pass went straight to Shaw and teed her up for an easy goal. City were on top from then on but Everton were able to threaten and grab a wonderful goal. Unfortunately for them, the damage had already been done.

Mushfiqur confident of young players firing

A slew of late injuries may have thinned Bangladesh’s ranks by the time they landed in Sri Lanka for their month-long tour, but captain Mushfiqur Rahim remained optimistic about his side’s chances

Andrew Fidel Fernando01-Mar-2013A slew of late injuries may have thinned Bangladesh’s ranks by the time they landed in Sri Lanka for their month-long tour, but captain Mushfiqur Rahim remained optimistic about his side’s chances, and backed his young players to fire.Bangladesh arrived in Sri Lanka without allrounder Shakib Al Hasan, whose calf surgery following a stress injury will keep him out for at least six weeks, while batsmen Shahriar Nafees and Naeem Islam, and left-arm spinner Enamul Haque jr will also miss the tour through injury. Their replacements include 21-year-old batsman Mominul Haque and 24-year-old uncapped allrounder Marshall Ayub, but it is likely to be the more established youngsters in the squad who will be called upon to bear more responsibility in the absence of several key seniors.Bangladesh won their last ODI series against West Indies 3-2 in November, with instrumental contributions for 20-year-old batsman Anamul Haque and 21-year-old offspinner Sohag Gazi, and Mushfiqur hoped his players would ride the momentum from that series into the Sri Lanka tour.”We had a couple of injuries in the last series against West Indies, and Shakib was not part of the ODI series – but we still won that series. The couple of young guys who came into the side in his place performed really well. We’ll miss him, but it’s a chance for the younger guys to prove they can do well abroad as well as at home.”Bangladesh last met Sri Lanka in an Asia Cup match in Dhaka, when the hosts defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets to earn a place in the tournament final. They had also beaten India earlier in the tournament, and their ODI record in 2012, when they won more matches than they lost against top-eight opposition, suggests they are an improving side.”There is no secret to our success,” Mushfiqur said. “The boys have really been working hard for the last one or two years. Someone needed to put their hands up and do the basics in the middle, and that’s what we did in the recent series against West Indies and also in the Asia Cup. The youngsters have come good and are performing really well, so hopefully they will continue in the same way.”The Sri Lanka tour begins with Tests however, where Bangladesh have been less impressive. Bangladesh achieved a slim first-innings lead in the first Test against West Indies in November, but could not sustain those standards throughout the Test, as they faltered in the final innings in pursuit of 245. There were encouraging periods in the second Test as well, most notably a maiden ton to debutant Abul Hasan from No. 10, but they were ultimately walloped by 10 wickets.”In the Test match we have to play each session very well and keep doing that over and over. In the last series against West Indies we did really well, but we couldn’t finish well in both the Tests. The young players are coming good, so if they put their hands up and perform, we will have a competitive Test series. “Bangladesh travel to Matara on Friday, to prepare for a three-day warm-up match against a Sri Lanka emerging side, which begins on Sunday. The first Test starts in Galle on March 8. In addition to two Tests, Bangladesh play three ODIs and a Twenty20.

Kaif, Saha tons revive Central, East

Wriddhiman Saha, back from a decent performance in the Adelaide Test against Australia, put East Zone in a strong position against North Zone with an unbeaten century in Delhi

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Feb-2012Wriddhiman Saha, back from a decent performance in the Adelaide Test against Australia, put East Zone in a strong position against North Zone with an unbeaten century in Delhi. East began with a 60-run stand between openers Dheeraj Jadhav and Manish Vardhan but soon found themselves in some trouble. Rajat Bhatia trapped Vardhan leg-before and Jadhav was bowled by Parvinder Awana in the next over. The score became 60 for 3 when Bhatia dismissed Natraj Behera for a duck. Saha and Ishank Jaggi then settled into a big partnership for the fourth wicket which ended only in the penultimate over of the day. The pair had put on 194 at a healthy rate when Jaggi fell to Harshal Patel for 86. Saha was batting on 100 with 12 boundaries as East finished on 258 for 4.Mohammad Kaif helped Central Zone recover with an unbeaten hundred against South Zone in Chennai. Central put in a disappointing performance after choosing to bat, with only No. 8 Piyush Chawla making more than 30 apart from Kaif. Abhimanyu Mithun bowled Naman Ojha for 9 in the ninth over, after which Central’s specialist batsmen were unable to build any partnership of note. When Robin Bist, the highest run-getter in the recent Ranji Trophy, was bowled by KP Appanna for 5, Central slipped to 90 for 4. Parvinder Singh and Jalaj Saxena managed starts but could not support Kaif for long. It was down to Chawla, who smashed eight boundaries in his 52 off 54 deliveries, to revive the stuttering innings. Stuart Binny limited the stand between Chawla and Kaif to 73 when he had the former caught by Robin Uthappa. Kaif remained unbeaten on 108 off 207 deliveries with Central ending on 292 for 8.

Josh Cobb blazed his way to a career-best 91 not out to fire LeicestershireFoxes to only their second victory of the season in the Clydesdale Bank 40 andput a dent in Northamptonshire Steelbacks’ hopes of reaching the semi-finals.The Foxes’ 20-year-old opener blasted two sixes and nine fours in his 88-ballinnings as Leicestershire raced to a five-wicket win, reaching their target of207 with 9.2 overs to spare.Half-centuries from Stephen Peters and Andrew Hall helped the Steelbacks to atotal of 206 for six after they had been put into bat. But with Cobb in such blistering form it proved nowhere near enough. The home side put down a marker in the first few overs of their innings – Cobband Andrew McDonald putting on 58 in the first six. The second over from Hallwent for 31 runs with two no-balls added to a six and five fours that came fromthe bat of McDonald. The Australian all-rounder finally fell to a catch in the deep off the bowlingof Lee Daggett for 35 but, by the end of the eight power-play overs, the Foxeshad reached 83 for two compared to the Steelbacks’ 36 for two at the samestage. From that point on the Foxes were in complete command and they made light workof the victory charge with Cobb dominating the Northamptonshire attack. He struck the ball superbly on both sides of the wicket, hitting sixes offChaminda Vaas and David Willey, in addition to numerous other boundaries thatflew through the gaps in the field.Although Will Jefferson, Jacques du Toit and Wayne White fell cheaply to leavethe Foxes on 138 for four in the 16th over it proved just a brief respite forthe Steelbacks.Cobb and Matt Boyce (28) shared a fifth-wicket stand of 66 in 14 overs thattook the home side to the brink of victory before Boyce skied a catch off JamesMiddlebrook.Cobb sealed the win with another cracking boundary to go past his previous bestone-day score of 87 against Durham in the same competition earlier in theseason.Peters, with 63 off 90 balls, and Hall, who made 67 off 81, provided thebackbone to a disappointing Steelbacks innings. The visitors never recoveredfrom a poor start when Foxes seamer Nadeem Malik took three for 18 in his firstsix overs. Only a stand of 91 between Peters and Hall gave the innings any substance, butin the end it was well below what was required.Having won their first five games in the competition the Steelbacks have nowlost two in succession and face a real battle to reach the last four.

Shaun Marsh crafts Scorchers' win

Shaun Marsh showed little signs of his back trouble as he smashed an unbeaten 99 off 52 balls in Perth Scorchers’ emphatic eight-wicket win, in pursuit of Melbourne Renegades’ imposing total of 3 for 188

Scorecard Shaun Marsh and Luke Ronchi celebrate victory•Getty ImagesShaun Marsh showed little signs of his back trouble as he smashed an unbeaten 99 off 52 balls in Perth Scorchers’ emphatic eight-wicket win, in pursuit of Melbourne Renegades’ imposing total of 3 for 188. The innings should state his case for a Test return against India on Boxing Day.Marsh hit nine fours and five sixes to help the visitors home with four balls to spare, in the tightest game of the tournament so far.The attention was on Marsh to prove he was Test ready, though he was playing a Twenty20 game. He spent all 39.2 overs in the field, fielding without any trouble, before playing one of the best innings of the tournament to date.At times, he was starved of the strike as Herschelle Gibbs peeled off a majestic 57 in their opening stand of 95. Marsh sprinted between the wickets with purpose. His running with his younger brother Mitchell stood out. But most importantly, he handled the raw pace of both Shaun Tait and Shane Harwood, and the penetrative leg-spin of Shahid Afridi, with equal aplomb. Marsh ended the night with a straight six off Abdul Razzaq to seal the match. The Renegades did not help their cause with some sloppy fielding and strange tactics in their defence of what seemed a winning total. The captain Andrew McDonald dropped Gibbs on 14 in the third over, and substitute Meyrick Buchanan spilled Marsh on 39. Buchanan made matters worse by parrying the ball over the rope for six. McDonald’s field settings were questionable though. Gibbs’ strong off-side play is well known, but the Renegades strangely played to his strengths as he hit 18 off a Razzaq over.McDonald got a lucky break when Gibbs holed out to the only man at the cover rope when the South African was in total command. Mitchell Marsh joined his brother and the pair took on the fielders with some audacious running. The younger Marsh should have been run out in the twelfth over but Graham Manou failed to handle a strong return from long-on cleanly.McDonald also neglected to bowl the left-arm spinner Aaron Heal. The decision was strange enough given Heal’s impressive record in this format, but even stranger given the Scorchers’ two most successful bowlers in the match were the left-arm duo of Michael Beer, and Brad Hogg. The pair collected 3 for 50 from their combined eight overs when their team-mates all conceded more than nine-an-over.The Renegades would have thought they were in a strong position after winning the toss and setting 188. The openers, McDonald and Aaron Finch blasted 91 from 64 balls. Finch was sent to hospital with a suspected broken rib after being struck by Ben Edmondson, but he still managed 49 from 40. McDonald’s 50 from 33 was an innings of great class. Glenn Maxwell, Nathan Reardon, and Razzaq clubbed six sixes between them to progress to an imposing total. Maxwell launched three in a row off Marcus North’s offspinners. But in the end Shaun Marsh stole the show, proving why he is regarded in some circles as Australia’s best batsman in all formats.

We haven't tampered with the ball – Cook

England’s one-day captain Alastair Cook has rubbished claims by Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul that James Anderson and Stuart Broad were involved in ball tampering

Andrew McGlashan03-Oct-2011England’s one-day captain Alastair Cook has rubbished claims by Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul that James Anderson and Stuart Broad were involved in ball tampering. Cook said if Gul did have any concerns he should have gone through the proper channels.Gul hit the headlines after giving an interview in Karachi, where he suggested he had seen examples of ball tampering and mentioned seeing Anderson and Broad using various techniques. However, he later tried to step back from controversy by saying he was only talking about the England pair in relation to natural wear that develops on a ball by throwing it across the outfield.”We certainly haven’t tampered with the ball and if he did have any complaints he should have gone to the ICC over that,” Cook said at Heathrow airport ahead of England’s departure for their one-day series in India. “I think he has almost said himself that it has been a bit of a mountain out of a molehill.”In a statement to Pakpassion.net, where Gul’s original comments first appeared, he clarified his remarks. “I was explaining that the ball gets scratched when it is thrown against the rough surface or hits the advertisement boards along the boundary rope. In this manner, I said, every bowler can be accused of doing it.”Gul made his earlier comments in an interview where he talked about the art of reverse swing and how various elements of ball tampering shouldn’t be included with the laws. “Leave cricket with its traditional ways rather than making changes that would take all the charm out of it,” he said. The recent change to using a separate ball from either end during one-day internationals, which will be implemented for the first time when Bangladesh play West Indies, could impact the role of reverse swing during 50-over matches. Under the previous regulations the ball was changed after 34 overs and the period shortly before the switch was when the fast bowlers would sometimes start to get the ball to reverse. However, with neither ball having no more than 25 overs of wear it will be harder for the natural deterioration to take place.
